LESSON 5

Hello!
This is Yasi and I’m back with the fifth episode of the 504 course.

So you’ve been busy studying English right? I can tell! You must be a very motivated
person or maybe ambitious!
After listening to this episode, I want you to go and watch a movie in English without
any subtitles, try to understand the general meaning or the plot of the movie. Don’t
freak out if you don’t get the details. Understanding the gist of it will suffice. Then write
a paragraph about it or record your voice and talk about it! The majority of English
learners do not do this, and that is why they don’t see any immediate results. Let me tell
you this: You can’t see results without making an effort!
One good aspect of learning a new language is that you don’t even need to make a
lot of time for learning it. For example, if you are a university student, you could go on
the campus in between your classes and open your book and study a couple of new
expressions, isn’t that a good idea?
If you are an advanced learner, you could gather your friends and debate over a topic
in English. For example, you could talk about Iranian customs and traditions. I guess this
way a big crowd will assemble to join in. You see, there are a lot of things you can do to
improve your English. There are so many methods…You just have to explore through to
find the right one.
Now let me complain about something that’s been bugging me and the rest of the
English teachers of the world: Students who pay for English classes sometimes have very
unrealistic expectations of their teachers! I mean they think the teacher is responsible for
teaching them all the best techniques. But that is not true! You are the only person who
carries the burden of finding the right method. YOU are responsible, not anybody else!
The teacher is only there to help you. To assist you. You can’t evade the responsibility.
At this age, you can probe into so many interesting things with the help of technology.
Even if you live in a rural area, you still have access to a mobile phone and the Internet,
so you can’t really make any excuses! I think we are all responsible for changing the
way we learn English; we have to reform the old ways so that the next generation of
Iranians find it much easier to fall in love with English. Don’t you agree?
