Case # 7

(Training and Development)

Masikap Machine Works

Pablo Cruz, Personnel Manager of Masikap Machine Works, walked to

informally find out from Chief Mechanic Juan Dimadamut if he would be willing to allow

Miguel Mercado to attend a training program for automotive mechanics being offered by the

NMYC in which all cost would be paid by a Japanese Automotive Manufacturer that was

planning to do business in the Philippines as a joint venture with Masikap Machine Works.

Miguel Mercado was being considered to take the place of Juan Dimadamut who was being

tapped to be the next Plant Superintendent. However, Dimadamut when told about the plans of

the company told Pablo Cruz that he was not interested in any change of jobs because it would

require some training and it would affect his work schedules which would make him unable to

attend his Prayer Group Meetings held every Friday.

Problems:

1. If you were Pablo Cruz, how would you convince Juan Dimadamut of the need for him to train
and develop to qualify for promotions? Please explain.
- If I were Pablo Cruz, I will talk to Mr. Juan Dimadamut privately and convince him in
an approachable and nicer way that he need to attend the three months’ trainings offered
by NMYC in relation to the upcoming joint venture of Japanese Automotive
Manufacturer and Masikap Machine Works. I inform him that this training will not only
improves his capability, capacity, productivity and performance but it will also give a
positive outcome to the company and its employees. I will also tell him that the Prayer
Group Meeting is always there, and they can still a Prayer Group Meeting without him.
But, this training courses is just once in a life time opportunity to Mr. Mercado and to the
company also.

2. Suppose Juan Dimadamut had five (5) years to go prior to retirement, but believes he alone is
the authority on the job and refuse to attend training courses how would you handle the situation
as the Personnel Manager? Explain please.

-As the HR Manager of Masikap Machine Works, I can handle the situation by
encouraging or forcing Juan Dimadamut to attend the training unless he has valid and
acceptable reason why he doesn’t want to attend the training. If he still refuses without
any valid reason, that’s the time I will issue a Memorandum sign by the Top Executive
requiring him to attend the training unless there is another employee with the same job
status like him who wants to attend the training.
