Onto something a little different now… if, like me, you notice your frame ra

some system maintenance. I’ll admit that I am a little lax in this department,
because I never seem to find the time to get to it. My hard drive hasn’t been
defragmented in years, and now I am suffering for it. As you use programs, save and
delete files, chunks of data get spread all over your drive in weird and wonde
This is basically called fragmentation. A defragging software program helps to put
these data chunks back in order so your programs can access them faster in one spot

Another check before going out over the expanse is to verify that your

Last but not least, you will need to make sure everything else looks
normal: engine indications, systems, altimeters, etc.
In the real world, as you close in on the OTS, you would need to call
and get something called an oceanic clearance. This is different from
the clearance you get from the ATC at the point of departure. You are
NOT allowed into NAT OTS unless you have this special permission.
This clearance will include your track assignment (in this case Track
Y is what was programmed into the FMS) and a Mach number for
separation purposes. You’ve been cleared as predicted at Mach 0.80.

frequencies (VHF) do not work beyond a certain distance. You should
monitor 121.5, which is the international emergency frequency, as well as
air-to-air on 123.45. As you pass each waypoint on your flight plan, you
need to make a position report to Gander (west of W030) or Shanwick (at
or east of W030) to update them of your progress.

Flying over the ocean may seem rather overwhelming at first. Yet
taking several hundred lives, make-believe or not, out over the open
waters of the cold Atlantic should take some careful consideration.
But after a few jaunts over “the pond” things will go much more
smoothly. And if you use simulation rates of 8X, a crossing can be
accomplished within a reasonable amount of time, although be aware
that some aircraft FMCs like the Level-D 767 can only handle a
maximum 4x simulation rate. This makes it pretty easy to practice a
couple of transatlantic trips now and then. Regardless of how much
work is involved, nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment of
making it over the pond with a safe landing to finish it all off! TAXIING TO THE GATE. WELCOME TO ENGLAND!

SURE BEATS DEFAULT SCENERY!
A Valuable Lesson
Well, here is a tricky one! I learned a valuable lesson and broke
a cardinal rule I had about allowing installers to adjust my FS9
config file and make changes to my default installation of MSFS.
The end result was simply fantastic! With this scenery installed
and allowing the changes to be made I am getting frame rates
that exceed 40 and 50. I was so ecstatic about the changes that
I wanted to go back and re-write all the previous reviews I had
done on MegaScenery titles recommending that users allow
these changes.
My excitement was short lived, as I found that when I went
back to flying in default areas there was an area of about 10
miles under my airplane that was considerably brighter then
that of my other sceneries, it was like I had this huge spotlight
on the bottom of my plane. It was very ugly!
I ended up finding myself at Sim-Outhouse.Com and
posting a message in the FS2004 forum in regards to this
problem. I was quick to get a reply that stated that this was a
common problem with MegaScenery titles and had something
to do with the program replacing the default detail1.BMP
file which is utilized when the texture detail slider is turned
LOOKING TO THE NORTH TOWARDS THE BAY. on. A quick search of my FS2004 disks located the original
file and I subsequently replaced the one placed there by the
MegaScenery installer. This corrected this little issue and I
once again stand by what I have said in previous reviews,
make any changes manually and don’t let the installer
change things you don’t want changed otherwise you could
be in for a world of hurt.
Conclusion
Volume 3 Version 2 is a beautiful piece of work and if you
have owned MegaScenery titles in the past or want to try
them out the new California titles will not disappoint. I find
that I do most of my flying over these particular add-ons now
rather than that of the default land areas simply because they
are so realistic looking. I have to recommend this title along
with that of Southern California Version 2, they both add so
much to the overall look of MSFS that one really shouldn’t do
without.

The first thing that struck me was that the airport lighting seemed
to be much brighter and stronger. When I began to taxi I found
that the blue taxiway edge lights were as clear in the main cockpit
view as when seen in other modes, a noticeable improvement. The
placement of green centerline taxiway lighting was also on a par with
commercial airport scenery packages such as SimFlyers. Curiously,
when I mentioned this to the folks at Zinertek they said that they
had not made any adjustments to taxiway lighting but theorized that
lighting changes they had made to the airport environment (stationary
lights, hangars, terminals, gates, VOR receivers, etc) may result in
clearer definition of other surfaces.
THE CHICAGO SKYLINE…
After takeoff I leveled off at 3000’ to get my first look at the
ground through the windscreen and spread out before me was the
Emerald City. The city lights were ablaze and I could locate the
dark line of Interstate 5 as it bisected the city. There were even what
appeared to be simulated headlights on the freeway that occasionally
flicker giving the impression of moving traffic, and as anyone who
has driven I-5 in Seattle or a freeway in Southern California knows,
depicting heavy vehicle traffic on these freeways no matter what the
hour is extremely realistic!
I then loaded up a 737 and took off from New York’s JFK airport
westbound on a flight up to the usual jet cruising altitudes. At last, I
was seeing a very realistic picture of the country from FL340. Every
time I view the passing landscape from a commercial flight at night
I note that the dark featureless expanses in between the lit areas give
the illusion that they are not land at all but water. I found much to my
delight that UNE manages to convey that same impression.
Indeed, the actual details are rendered in a way that makes them
obvious yet subtle. The night views simply look and feel right which
is not something I felt before installing UNE.
Each time I fly using UNE I find myself hitting the Print Scrn
button as yet another mosaic of light passes under my wings. I have
selected some of those images to accompany this review. However, I
WHERE ELSE WOULD YOU GO TO SEE LIGHTS AT NIGHT? cannot overemphasize the fact that the screenshots do not even come

close to accurately portraying the depth of the lighting experience.
I chose to capture each screenshot because it demonstrated the
subtle coloring and degrees of brightness that provide an extremely
realistic experience. However, what is viewed as a “must save”
scene on the monitor does not appear nearly as vibrant when
reproduced as a screenshot. So look at these images and think of
them as merely a hint of what can be expected from UNE.
All in all, a product that offers good value for money and a much
improved night flying experience. Ultimate Night Environment

has released service updates containing over 80
corrections, fixes and improvements. This article will
show you how to get the most out of the “Queen”
incorporating these new updates…
The result of these recent enhancement has been a more stable
and accurate simulation. Subsequently, early this year the publisher,
Aerosoft, released a boxed CD-ROM edition of the aircraft
containing a professionally printed manual (it is somewhat truncated
from PMDG’s original version). In the near future, PMDG also
expects to release an add-on to Queen of the Skies in the form of the
747-400F freighter. In addition to modeling the –400F, it will also
add the YAL-1A military variant and some long-anticipated features
to the passenger version, such as accurately modeled cockpit readouts

All joking aside, you may as well accept it. If you want to
consistently fly this simulation on realistic routes with any level
of accuracy, then you are going to need the help of the automated
systems to back you up, at least some of the time. So let’s have a look.
The Autopilot
Once your route is programmed into the FMC, the autopilot can
read and follow it directly with a minimum of input. It is important to
understand that the autopilot divides your route into both horizontal
and vertical components.

Mine was the DVD Box type. The package includes:
• Several variants of the 777 in -200LR, -200LRF (Freight) and the -
300 as mentioned above.
• Over 20 great accurate liveries including most of the large 777
operators (UPS, United, Lufthansa, Japan Airlines, Fedex, British
Airways, ANA, just to mention a few).
• An accurate simulation of the Collins WXR 2100 weather radar (this
was my first look at this feature and I found it to be very impressive
and it also comes with its own manual).
• A very important fuel planning utility and a standalone load editor.
• FSUIPC.DLL module version 3.47 and NAVDATA.
• Quite a substantial manual (actually a book, which is rare today).

The Install
Insert the DVD and it starts a flawless install with the now common

of the items included in the package were installed and could be found
under “programs/just flight/777” in the Windows Start menu.
The Exterior
PSS 777 variant(s) are very well done. Excellent I might add. All
the liveries are very accurate renditions of the actual plane(s) they
represent. You’ll find animated undercarriage, including “gear droop”,
flaps, elevators, rudder, spoilers, ailerons and even flexing wings. Also
included are APU Inlet RAM air turbine plus cargo and cabin doors.
This is just to mention a few. Great job, here, guys!

EICAS that I have ever seen on a model. Included pages are:
Electrics, Hydraulics, Fuel, Air, Engine, FCTL (Flight control), Gear

and finally CHKL (Checklist). All of above pages are fully functional
with, again, clear and crisp graphics that are easy to interpret.

how the job gets done. This follow-on article will
delve into the relationship of pilots and controllers in
regard to online ATC. Let’s get to it!
Some participants in online flying may not be familiar or
comfortable with speaking into a radio microphone or paying attention
to the radio to hear transmissions intended for them. Accordingly, they
might also not be aware that sharing the radio frequency with other
pilots requires a cooperative effort.

• After the network connection has been made use your various view
modes to look around your aircraft. Check that you have not parked
the airplane on top of nor in too close proximity of another aircraft.
Some of the add-on scenery choices may have slight differences
in their gate placement that can result in such incursions. If you
find that you are too close to or blocking another aircraft, use the
slew function to carefully adjust your aircraft position. This use of
slewing is an exception to the next tip which is:
• Do not slew your aircraft when online. It is most distressing for all

• If a controller issues an instruction to you (N1234) and then to Controllers can have literally dozens of intersections in their airspace;
another aircraft in the following manner, “N1234 turn right heading so many in fact that it is impossible to have all of them displayed as

heading 310” the response is expected first from Learjet 567 and used by the controller if at all (which is why it is not a problem not
then from you. That is because the controller feels that the second to have them displayed). Therefore, a controller is likely to not be
familiar with an intersection if you use it to announce your position.
This results in the controller having to request that you make another
transmission using something more obvious as a reference point
and that takes up controller time and more importantly, time on the
frequency. Announcing, “N1234 with you 40 miles northeast of
Orlando flight level 210” is actually more useful and precise than,
“N1234 with you crossing GOOFY flight level 210”.
Other Considerations
• Time compression. Do not use accelerated time settings while in
controlled airspace without prior authorization from the controller.
Usually if the skies are not too busy controllers will grant such
requests, however, there may be factors of which the pilot is
unaware; such as other traffic or airspace boundaries, that would
make granting the request troublesome. Once permission has
been given to fly at “warp speed” be prepared to reduce the rate to
normal speed as you near the ARTCC border so that your aircraft
can be handed off to the next controller.

include as many new and unique sound products as I could in this
month’s column.
I know what you’re thinking… the same thing I did at first; “oh no,
not another attempt at welding a sub-woofer or speaker with a chair”.
Being in this industry as long as I have (over a decade now), I’ve
seen them all; the Thunderseat, Aura’s Interactor, and countless other
products, all of which promised a more realistic experience, and all
of which utilized a speaker, or speakers either built into or combined
with a chair. In the past, previous options weren’t just all a little bit
hokey, but they ended up being a pretty expensive investment to boot.
Some were cool though, because I really did love the Thunderseat,
even if it cost more than a brand new video card, sound card and a
new software title, or two combined at the time.

The bottom line is; the Buttkicker does rattle the pneumatic lift

Internally…
Back on the flight deck (was it called that in 1940?) I started working
through the systems. The aircraft loads with the pilot’s view of life, but Shift-
2 opens a window showing the Flight Engineer’s view from the right hand
seat, a nice touch. You need to key Shift-1 though to close the pilot’s view,
otherwise you get a sort of cross-eyed view! The Lancaster crew included
only one pilot, as they were few to start with, and getting fewer by the day.
Shift-3 opens the Flight Engineer’s fuel management and “Ts and Ps” panel
- engine oil temperature and pressure, and coolant temperature.
You would expect the design changes to the aircraft throughout its
history to include controls and instrumentation, especially so when
different engines were fitted. Well, the designers of this model have
reproduced differences to the relevant panels. Several of the gauges are
different, or absent across the variants. The engines panel is color-coded
in the later models. However, either by design or error, the models
without fuel pressure indicator lamps still have the labels on the panel. DETAIL IS GOOD
Shift-4 opens a small panel for selecting radiator shutters - automatic
for flight, or open while taxiing. Shift-5 opens an exquisitely detailed
radio tuner, reminiscent of my mother’s on the sideboard long before
us ordinary folks had television. Its function is tuning in the ADF, a
crucial homing beacon at the dawn of radio navigation. Shift-6 opens
an insignificant little panel but with some superbly detailed animation.
The two frequency selection switches for tuning in the “Standard Beam
Approach” system (similar to today’s ILS and which uses the ILS
functionality in FS) have the typical “click bounce effect” I’ll call it,
caused by using a detent system comprising a small ball bearing which
pushed by a spring into a hemispherical cup at the correct position and
bounced over the “hump” into the next cup with a positive “click” and
a tiny backwards motion (bounce) as the switch was released. This
“click bounce effect” is a positive work of art in the autopilot pitch
control also on this panel. Curiously, the carburettor heat control is
situated on this panel, and this has been faithfully reproduced in the
FS model.
Shift-7 brings up a P-type compass with a fully rotating bezel, and LINING UP AT SCAMPTON 09
shift-8 brings up the bubble sextant which was a primary navigation
instrument in those days. There is a separate and fascinating
operating manual for this instrument included in the package but it’s
a bit complicated, so I’ll take a rain check on the sextant just now.
In fact, I think we are now ready for a flight test. Of course I went to

Ground steering is by differential braking. I discovered this by

worked perfectly once I got used to it, but it makes a set of rudder

aircraft is behind the wheels, so any turn on the ground induces a very
realistic continued swing in the same direction which has to be positively

Cockpit Building Series Going Glass - Using Multiple Monitors for Flight Deck Instruments
BY MATTHEW EDWARDS

nstruments are a predominant way pilots receive
information on what exactly is happening with
their aircraft. Since they are so important
to flight, many flight deck builders have adding
instruments to their cockpits near the top of the list of
things to do…
However, physical steam gauges can be quite expensive and
may not even be that realistic if the airframe has a glass cockpit.
Most simmers have a solution to this problem close at hand without
realizing it. Using extra monitors can allow you to quickly and easily
add instruments to your cockpit. With some added hardware and
excellent third party software, you can have instruments showing up
on your monitors in Flight Sim 2004, Lock On: Modern Air Combat

F4Glass supports a plethora of instruments and displays. Each
individual gauge can be moved and resized. The modeled gauges and

HSI, VVI, RPM, EPU, nozzle position, FTIT, oil pressure, caution

That’s quite a list! One unfortunate exception is the lack of a fuel
gauge. This was originally not supported well in Falcon’s shared
memory but promises to be supported in the next version. Currently
F4Glass is another application that runs best over a network but
can be run on a single computer if you find the performance hit is
acceptable. “EagleEye” has been working on a hardware accelerated
version that may make running F4Glass on a single system more
practical. Hopefully we will see this upgraded version soon, but there

This was a comment made to me some years ago by a passenger Note: you can see the character of this person (e.g. ‘born to rule!’,
when he was visiting us in the cockpit. Terrorism was not a problem at and ‘self-interested’), so not a good person to spend any time with

as a courtesy, I invited him to visit us in the cockpit some time during
the very long cruise across the North Atlantic enroute between Las Human Factor

everything he says? Increase cruising-thrust to increase speed to
reduce time to reach the destination (to make this passenger happy,
but requiring more fuel)? Try to justify the importance of your
position as a pilot, and explain all the things you have to do during a
ICELAND normal flight? Argue with the (rich) passenger, and throw him out of
the cockpit? Politely ask him to return to his seat, and say ‘goodbye’?

Fuel required for the planned flight was a problem because the 1. Decreasing the number of passengers and freight; or

fly); or
1. Fuel for start-up and taxi. 3. Both.
2. Fuel for takeoff and climb to cruise.
