DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION MODULE 1: BASIC CONCEPT OF DISASTER AND DISASTER

WHAT’S IN.

Activity 1: “Count Me In”

Write five (5) disastrous events in the Philippines in the last five years that you could still recall. Wrote
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Typhoon Frank in 2008

2. Taal Volcano Eruption in 2020
3. Typhoon Yolanda in 2013
4. Tropical Storm Thelma in 1991
5. Floods & Landslides unleashed by Typhoon Washi in 2011

Activity 1.1 Understanding Disaster

1. The image shown is the aftermath of a horrendous disaster that has led to a distraction of life &
living causing an uncomfortable and drastic change in their lives.
2. Based on the image shown, I assumed that there was flash floods and landslides that was
unleashed by a strong typhoon and an earthquake that damaged the infrastructures and houses.

5. Man-made
6. Natural

Based on the presented images, how will you differentiate natural from man-made disasters?

- A Natural disaster is a cataclysmic processes of the Earth that is unexpected and cannot be
interrupt, or halt when it hits while on the other hand, a Man-made disaster are caused by
humans, it can be intentional and unintentional, this disaster can be improved and prevented.

Given the table, give a natural disaster you experienced within your locality or you had heard from the
news recently, what makes it a natural disaster?

- The Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, one of the most detestable time of the year. The typhoon damaged
and caused disruption in the living which halted work, school, electricity, water distribution, scarring
in food production, wrecked a lot of houses and trees, and a mass record of deaths and injuries.
These given causes has led to be indeed a natural disaster because it was unexpected and people
are unprepared from its destruction, it’s a natural cause and consequence of the Earth which
cannot be halted.

Give a man-made disaster you experienced within your locality or you had heard from the news
recently.

- Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 knocked over Power Barge 103 of NAPOCOR in Estancia, Iloilo causing an
oil spill. An Air Quality test was performed in December 7, 2013 and found out that benzene levels
in affected areas reached near-zero parts per million. Residents were to evacuate as the benzene
levels had reached unhealthy amounts.
