During this time of year, particularly October 31, it's

impossible to avoid a common symbol in store windows,
doorways, TV commercials, clothing prints, and wrapping
paper.

It is the pumpkin of
Halloween, carved in a
grotesque or comical
way and illuminated
inside.

But why is this orange vegetable so closely associated with the

Halloween celebration?

The Celts believed that there was a barrier

between the human world and the spirit
world that opened at the end of the
summer.
That allowed ghosts to roam the Earth. So,
on October 31, the souls of the dead would
return to their homes but witches, elves
and elves would also come out to harass
those who had harmed them in life.
The story is that one Jack made a
pact with the devil that went wrong
and was condemned to roam the
eternal night, lighting his way with
a piece of incandescent coal inside
a turnip carved with holes.

The locals started carrying these

"Jack lanterns" around the villages
and left them burning in front of the
houses on Halloween night.

They were supposed to represent supernatural beings or

serve to drive away evil spirits.

The meaning of Halloween can change depending on the culture, but in all it remains the
same essence. The Celts, for example, believed that the dead could return every year
during that night and, if they were not given what they wanted, they could do all kinds
of evil. Hence the famous "trick or treat" with which children go door to door asking for
treats, in exchange for not doing mischief.
Most of all Halloween traditions are still held today. For example, the Celts also believed
that dressing up was the best option to deceive the dead.
