3
Communication is divided into elements which help us better understand its
mechanics or process. Other elements have a fixed order in the process , but there are
two which have no fixed order in the process such as the noise/barrier and the
context/situation, for the reason that both may come at any given time during the
process.

Elements of Communication

1. SENDER (or the speaker) source of information or message. The sender's goal is
to ensure that he is understood, or he/she was able to send his/her message
across with its real intended meaning.

2. MESSAGE is the information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed by the sender in words

or in action.

3. ENCODING means translating information into a message in the form of symbols

that represent ideas or concept.

4. CHANNEL is the medium or the means, such as personal or non-personal, verbal

or non-verbal, in which the encoded message is conveyed.

5. DECODING is the process of interpreting the encoded message of the

sender/speaker by the receiver.

6. RECEIVER (or "the listener) is the recipient of the message, or someone who
decodes the message.

7. FEEDBACK is the receiver's reactions, responses, or information provided by the

receiver.

8. NOISE/BARRIER are the factors that affect the flow of communication

9. SITUATION/CONTEXT is the time and place or the environment where

communication takes place.

People’s purposes in communication may vary but it is important that one knows
how to effectively reach their goal or their intended meaning to be understood by the
person that they are talking to, through the use of the different functions of
communication using different verbal and nonverbal signals.
Communication functions refer to how people use language for different purposes. This
also refers to how language is affected by the behavior of people used to regulate the
nature and amount of activities people engage in.
