Pipe Connections

Location: N1.2 B1-04

Name: _______________________________________

Matric Number: _______________________________________

Group: _______________________________________

Date of experiment: _______________________________________

OBJECTIVE

In this experiment you will be designing and connecting pipe/tube in conjunction

with fittings to take in feeds from two different sources and supply the mixture to an
outlet.

INTRODUCTION

Pipe/tube serves to direct the flow of fluids. Fittings are the connectors between
segments of pipe/tube that serve to change the direction of flow, control the rate of
flow, join multiple inlet to a single outlet, split a single inlet to multiple outlet or
combinations of these purposes

INSTRUCTIONS

Outlet of Feed A and Outlet of Feed B and outlet of the mixture have a size of ¼”
NPT connection. You are to design a series of pipes/tubes and fittings that connects
Feed A with Feed B and lead the mixture to an outlet. The following requirements
will need to be followed:
• Control of the flow rates of Feed A and Feed B
• Control of the ratio between Feed A and Feed B
• No backflow for both Feed A and Feed B
• Control of flow rate of the mixture

Figure 1. Illustration of the pipe connection setup to link Feed A and Feed B to an
outlet for the mixture.

Questions:
1. What valve should be used to control the flow rates of the two feeds and the
mixture? How many of such valve will you need for the setup intended.
2. What valve should be used to prevent backflow?
3. How many elbows, tees, valves from questions 1 and 2 will be needed in the
setup?

REPORT REQUIREMENTS

• Take a photo of your completed setup that shows the presence of all the
necessary fittings and valves.
• State the rationale of using specific valves at the specific location and discuss
if it is possible to remove one of more of the valves without affecting the
control, operation and safety of the setup.
• If you are to allowed to add ONE more fitting to the setup, what would it be
and why?
