UNIT 6
1) COMPARATIVE OF EQUALITY.
as …….... as
an apple / an orange (round)
An apple is as round as an orange.
Seville / Cordoba (pretty)
Seville is as pretty as Cordoba
tiger / leopard (wild)
A tiger is as wild as a leopard
The olm / the dugong (amazing)
The olm is as amazing as the dugong
2) COMPARATIVE OF INFERIORITY
less…. than / not as…….. as
a cat / tiger (heavy)
A cat is less heavy than a tiger.
A cat is not as heavy as a tiger.
a horse/ a crocodile (dangerous)
A horse is less dangerous than a crocodile
A horse is not as dangerous as a crocodile.
English / Chinese (difficult)
English is less difficult than Chinese
English is not as difficult as Chinese.
Write sentences. Use comparatives of equality or
comparatives of inferiority-
1- a lizard / a butterfly (colourful)
A lizard is less colourful than a butterfly.
A lizard is not as colourful as a butterfly.
2- a kitten / a puppy (cute)
A kitten is as cute as a puppy.
3- a chimpanzee / a dog (domesticated)
A chimpanzee is less domesticated than a dog.
A chimpanzee is not as domesticated as a dog.
4- giraffes / zebras (beautiful)
Giraffes are as beautiful as zebras
COMPARATIVES OF SUPERIORITY
1) One syllable adjectives: …- er than
tall- taller than
Pau Gasol is taller than Rafael Nadal.
long- longer than
The Nile is longer than the Guadalquivir.
short- shorter than
wild – wilder than
quiet- quieter than
Pay attention:
1) nice/ cute / huge / + -r
(one syllable adjectives ending in –e only take -r)
A butterfly is nicer than a lizard.
A puppy is cuter than a rhinoceros.

2) big / fat / thin


(one syllable adjectives ending in 1 consonant + 1
vowel + 1 consonant -- double the last consonant)
A rhinoceros is bigger than a cat.
Cows are fatter than horses.
A magazine is thinner than a book.
2) Two syllable adjectives ending in -y.
-ier than
pretty- prettier than
sunny- sunnier than
tiny- tinier than
heavy- heavier than
Spain –England (sunny)
Spain is sunnier than England
mosquitoes – dogs (tiny)
Mosquitoes are tinier than dogs
3) For other adjectives, we use:
more…… than
more modern than
more dangerous than
more unusual than
more colourful than
A dugong / a dog (unusual)
A dugong is more unusual than a dog.
A butterfly / a lizard
A butterfly is more colourful than a lizard

Crocodiles are more dangerous than horses
Finally there are some adjectives than form the
comparative in an irregular way.
good – better
bad – worse
far – farther / further
