Course Introduction / Description: (preferably at least 100 words)


It should always be remembered that communication along with being a means is also the thread
that binds a manager to the rest of his/her organization as well as to all external stakeholders. Hence
managers must always ensure that this powerful tool is always used skillfully and judiciously.

Therefore the overall end objective of Managerial Communication is to help ensure that students
are able to be effective and efficient communicators in any managerial, business or organizational
setting and challenge.

In service of this goal the following four components or areas will be covered:

1. Our starting point will be analytical business writing where students will be provided with the
necessary tools and techniques to be able to decipher as well as deconstruct and critically
evaluate arguments, opinions, recommendations etc. put forward by others in a written format
e.g. interdepartmental emails.
2. The second component of the course will then focus upon the polar opposite – persuasive
communication. That is to say teaching and training students on how to put forward, support

and insulate their own ideas, opinions, recommendations etc. so that their audience is
convinced of their validity, utility, etc.
3. The remaining component of the course will focus upon oral communication. More specifically
the objectives here are to develop, strengthen and enhance students’ oral communication
abilities including and especially their presentation skills.

Course Learning Outcomes:

After completing this course, the participants should be able to:


1. be more “effective” as well as “efficient” when submitting the various types of
communication required from managers in their daily roles i.e. analytical business writing
and persuasive communication
2. be comfortable, confident and captivating with public speaking and presenting as well as
using oral communication in the wide plethora of day to day challenges, obstacles etc
faced by managers in the corporate/work world
