VISUAL ORCHESTRATION #1

SPECTROTONE COURSE

Lecture 6
Listening Guide
To illustrate the points of this lesson Iʼve selected Jupiter from The Planets by Gustav Holst.
Hopefully you have this in your music collection. If you don't, for your convenience I've
researched and found multiple performances on YouTube you can choose from. If you don't
have Jupiter from The Planets please look to purchase (or stream) a legal MP3 from iTunes,
Amazon or similar music retailers.

To get the MOST out of this lecture, listen to the performance before you watch Video Lecture 6.

The Hans Zimmer Sound

At the time Visual Orchestration #1 was produced, there was no single library on the market that
could come close to the massive multi-layered strings used by Hans Zimmer in his film scores.
But, in 2018 Hans teamed up with Spitfire Audio to release Hans Zimmer Strings, recorded
with a whopping 344 musicians! Also available are Hans Zimmer Piano, Drums and

Obvious Adams
In Video Lecture 6, you were referred to the Obvious Adams website to access a free PDF

the Hathi Trust Digital Library using the link below. When the webpage opens, click on the
“Full View” link. You can view the book but must be a Hathi Trust educational partner to

Note About Professional Orchestration, Vol. 3

In Video Lecture 6, Peter mentions having worked out detailed combinations of different
orchestral sections in Professional Orchestration, Volume 3. This title was in the early stages of
development when Peter unexpectedly passed away. Because of this, Professional
Orchestration, Volume 3 was sadly never completed or published.
