ENGLISH LANGUAGE PANEL: AR 2 SWOT ANALYSIS OCTOBER 2020

STRENGTHS
PAPER 1
S1 15 pupils took the advice to answer descriptive Q1, 8
pupils answered Q4-Expository, 5 pupils answered Q2-
argumentative, and 5 pupils answered Q3-narrative.
S2 Some of them were able to include some dialogues and
good phrases in their essays.
S3 Some pupils too could adapt the essays learned in class
to address Q1 and Q3.
S4 27 pupils could write more than 1 page for Section B,
though with grammatical errors and weak structures.
S5 6 pupils who answered descriptive and narrative could
portray their ideas well with the criterias needed in
the marking scheme though with verbs form errors.
[Anndrianna, Carolina, Jessy, Joshua, Magdelyn and
Vanessa].
S6 For Section A, all 33 pupils could write the format
correctly.
S7 The pupils were able to do their introduction and
conclusion in both essays as a proof to practise what
they had learned in class.
PAPER 2:
S8 6 pupils managed to score 8-11 in Section A. This
helped them a lot to score better marks/ grade.
S9 14 pupils scored full marks in Section B.
S10 Majority could do well in Section D-poem [27 pupils
scored 5/5].
OPPORTUNITIES
O1 Sufficient materials and module. The usage of STORM
MODULE [Paper 2 almost completed]
O2 Past years papers will be covered too.
O3 Cooperation from the pupils.
O4 Additional modules: Module GALUS and Module
CEMERLANG after ARI. Pupils will be grouped by the
class teacher to use the module.

WEAKNESSES
PAPER 1
W1 Some pupils could not comprehend the task and also
unable to construct simple sentences correctly (not
looking at the grammar)
W2 Most of them couldn’t write the modal verbs correctly –
can also / will also.
W3 All the pupils are very weak in verbs form-especially past
tense and SVA. Thus, need to find strategy to overcome
this problem.
W4 Inadequate variety of sentence structures and lack of
strong vocabulary. Majority used simple English with
repetition of certain words and linkers too. (Need to
drill them on 3 types of basic sentence structures)
W5 Weak in paragraphing, introduction and also conclusion.
(Therefore, need more practices and exposure on these)
W6 Weak in punctuations especially capital letters for proper
noun, commas, and full stops as they like to write
lengthy sentences.
W7 Some handwriting was very messy, not clearly written as
the needed alphabet.
PAPER 2:
W8 15 pupils scored 1-5 marks in Section A.
W9 Most of the pupils still unable to address the 3 parts in
the Literature essay and also unable to produce
concrete evidence. They interpreted the value
‘determination’ wrongly. Jenny did not answer this
question – one cause of her failure.
W10 Wrong address of pronouns and lack of points [summary
writing].
THREATS
T1 Keep repeating the same grammatical errors even after
examination.
T2 Unable to complete exercises given on time and that will
interfere in the next lesson, meaning pilling up of works
to do.
T3 Lack of experience in teaching and marking SPM Paper.

 STRATEGIES TO OVERCOME WEAKNESSES:

1 Ensure that all 33 pupils answer all questions in the coming exam after many
practices and exposure within these 2 months.
2 Attempt all past years papers from 2013 to 2019 and share samples of
excellent model answers for essays.
3 Drilling and answering SETS OF QUESTIONS from STORM Module also in
Module for GALUS and CEMERLANG according to the groups appointed after
AR2.
4 Focused-Modular approach for different section in Paper 2 based on pupils
need.
5 Use complete essays but with wrong verb form to be corrected into the
correct form especially past tense form to address the pupils’ weaknesses in
narrative essay.
6 Peer Learning- to read, evaluate, edit friend’s essays before hand in their
work.
7 Ensure that corrections are done to their errors.
8 One-to-one meeting and discussion with the teacher after essay was marked
for personal review on own essay.
9 Compilation of excellent model answers for essays questions.
10 Remedial on building basic sentence structures (weak group) and enrichment
on variety of sentence types (average group)
