Topic 1: Overview and RECEPTIVE VS. EXPRESSIVE MACRO SKILLS


Learning Objectives:
At the end of this topic as pre service teacher, you should be able to
✓ Identify the five macro skills of language
✓ Differentiate receptive to expressive macro skills
How do you define macro skills?
Macro skills refer to the primary, key, main, and largest skill set relative to a
particular context. It is commonly referred to in English language. The five macro
skills are reading, listening, writing, speaking.and viewing.

What is the importance of macro skills?


These macro skills are needed in order for us to communicate and
understands with each other.
Five Macro Skills
✓ Listening - The ability to accurately receive and interpret messages.
✓ Reading- The ability to process text undestand its meaning, and integrate what
the readers aldready knows.
✓ Speaking- Ability to communicate orally and effectively
✓ Writing- Ability to communicate the message with clarity and ease through
symbols , words and signs.
✓ Viewing - ( the newly added skills) refers to the ability to perceive meaning from
visual images and presentation. Non verbal communication

RECEPTIVE VS EXPRESSIVE MACRO SKILLS

Receptive macro skills is the ability to understand words and languages.

Expressive macroskills is the use of words, sentences, gestures and writing to create
a message or convey a meaning.
