MACRO SKILLS
Macro skills refers to the primary, key, main
and largest skill set relating to a particular
context. It is commonly referred to in in
English language.

The five macro skills are listening, speaking,


reading, writing and viewing.

LISTENING
o Listening is the ability to accurately
receive and interpret messages in the
communication process.

o There are three common modes of


listening: competitive, passive and active.

COMPETITIVE LISTENING
o Happens when we are more interested in
promoting our own point of view than in
understanding or exploring someone else’s
view.

PASSIVE LISTENING
o Is listening without reacting: Allowing
someone to speak, without interrupting.

o Not doing anything else at the same time.

ACTIVE LISTENING
o Communication technique first developed
by Carl Rogers and Richards Farson that is
used in counseling, training and conflict
resolution.
o It requires the listener fully concentrate,
understand, respond and remember what is
said.

SPEAKING
o Speaking is done through the vocalization
of human communication.
o Speaking depends on the context wherein
communication will take place.

o Speaking can be formal or informal.

READING
o Reading comprehension involves decoding
symbols with the intention of deriving
meaning from the text.
o This can be used for sharing knowledge, for
self-development or simply for relaxation.

COMPONENTS OF READING
o Decoding refers to the process of translating
a printed word into a sound.
o Comprehension is the level of
understanding of a text or a message.
o Retention pertains to the ability to retain or
keep information of what has been read.

WRITING
o Writing is the process of using symbols to
communicate thoughts and ideas in a
readable form.
o Follow the writing process:
1) prewriting 2) drafting 3) revising
4) proofreading 5) publishing

o Controlled includes copying

o Semi-Controlled is the goal of guided


writing is to make students practice
spelling, learn new vocabulary,
punctuation and structure.

o Free is teachers giving explanations of words and
expressions, a sample draft of composition before
students write independent work
o Expressive needs a lot of imagination wherein
students write poem, essay, short story, article
out of past experience.

o Refers to the ability to perceive meaning
from visual images and presentations

o Process that supports oracy and literacy

o Broadens the ways in which students can


understand and communicate their ideas

Visual Literacy
 Ability to interpret meaning from visual images

 Ability to construct effective visuals in order to convey


ideas to others (Valmont, 2003)
Critical Viewing
 Ability to carefully comprehend and evaluate information
presented by visual media
 Ability to think critically about the composition of the
picture
