Identifying and Describing Triangles and

Quadrilaterals

Objectives

After going through this LAS, you are expected to:

1. identify triangles according to sides and angles;
2. describe triangles according to sides and angles; and
3. identify and describe the different kinds of quadrilaterals.

Lesson

Identifying and Describing Triangles and

Quadrilaterals

Lesson 1.1. Identifying and Describing Triangles

A plane figure is a closed figure whose point lies on the same flat
surface.
A triangle is a plane figure. It has three sides and angles. The altitude
of a triangle is the line segment drawn from a vertex of an angle
perpendicular to the line containing the opposite side. The height is the
length of an altitude.
A triangle may be classified according to its sides and angles.
1
Read and study the figures below.
Triangles are classified according to their angles.
A right triangle has one right angle which measures exactly
90˚.

An acute triangle has three acute angles each

measuring more than 0˚ but less than 90˚.

An obtuse triangle has one obtuse angle which measures

more than 90˚ but less than 180˚.

Triangles are classified according to their sides.

Given Name Description

isosceles triangle This is an isosceles triangle. It

has at least two congruent or
equal sides.

equilateral triangle This is an equilateral triangle.

It has three congruent or all
sides are equal.

scalene triangle This is a scalene triangle. It

has no congruent or no equal
sides.

2
Lesson 1.2 Identifying and Describing Different
Quadrilaterals

Quadrilaterals are polygons with four sides and four angles. The
following are different quadrilaterals:

A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides and its

opposite sides are equal.

A rhombus is a parallelogram that has 4

equal sides.

A rectangle is a parallelogram that has a 4

right angles. Its opposite sides are equal.

A square is a parallelogram that has 4 equal

sides and 4 right angles.

A trapezoid has only one pair of opposite sides that

are parallel.
