CEIT319 – FINAL REFLECTION PAPER

Throughout this semester, as second grade students of Foreign Language Education

department, we learnt how to create and adapt materials to our classes, and to create
applicable lesson & unit plans. For the final task, we prepared three lesson plans for a unit
from the MEB English curriculum, using the lab materials we were introduced to through the
semester. In this essay, we aim to explain how the process went, and our thoughts and
reflections of the task.
Firstly, we came together to choose a unit that is applicable to all of the labs we had. After
viewing the units, we chose to work on the 3rd grade unit 5, Toys & Games. We distributed
the lesson plan, dividing the topics to three parts. The first lesson plan was prepared by
Songül Büyükköse. Along with the lesson plan, she chose to prepare a Prezi presentation and
a Kahoot game. To provide an introduction to the unit, she prepared a Prezi presentation
with colorful visuals. For evaluation, she prepared a Kahoot game to be played at the end of
class. Lesson plan 2 was prepared by Feyyaz Acar, who prepared a concept map on
Bubble.us, and our website on Weeb.ly. His topic was expressing quantity. He used the
concept map as a presentation to introduce various toys with their number. His lesson was a
combination of listening, reading and writing with the diverse activities that were devised to
instill quantity of toys into the students. Lesson plan 3 was prepared by Merve İnce, her
topic was talking about possessions. She prepared a pictochart about toys that have owners,
along with a Powtoon animation to better demonstrate the topic she finalized everything in
the last lesson as the students had to combine everything they had learned in the past 2
classes which are namely: the toys, their quantity and the ability to ask questions with “how
many___ do you have”. The Unit plan was prepared collaboratively. We determined and
wrote objectives according to MEB, and to our materials. We made sure that it was
compatible with their levels. We dwelled a lot on the ABCD method to completely address all
the specific points. Time allocation was made according to the efficiency of the class and
fitting the materials into the given time. For example, the most important activity in Songül’s
week was Kahoot and the timeline, along with the contingency plan was planned
accordingly. We used different instructional methods for each week, but overall, it was
student centered. Since the first week was an introduction, we used direct method and a
teacher centered approach. In the other weeks, games and groupwork activites are based on
student centered approach which is the major inspiration for most of our plans. Overall, we
can say that it was not based on only one approach, so we made an eclectic approach to
better plan the lessons. For learner participation, we used lots of “repeat after me” activities,
especially in Prezi. With great help from MEB materials, we decided to get learner
participation and evaluation from those. Teacher observation and checking the answers of
the activities, and Kahoot will be the ways of evaluation.
Secondly, we would like to reflect on our feelings and approaches on the project. In our
opinion, it was very fruitful to apply the materials we learned in labs in our lesson plans.
Creating them was fun, but time consuming and sometimes tedious. It was very efficient to
work on this project, because we have many new options for materials to integrate to our
classes in the future. Learning about these materials gave us a great perspective on how to
create interesting and efficient lessons. Moreover, we discussed many times that the classes
we had in the earlier education were very dull in comparison with what we were working on.
English would be a lot more fun and easier with lesson plans and materials like we were
taught to do in CEIT319. The most challenging part was to integrate the ASSURE steps, as we
were unfamiliar to that kind of a lesson plan.
Eventually, we came together to develop a unit plan, three lesson plans and relevant
materials, with the help of ASSURE steps, and MEB curriculum. Having done this project, we
now are more proficient in preparing lesson plans and various interesting materials for
aiding classroom activities. We understood which materials we saw on labs were more
suitable to which lesson plan, so in our future educator career, we will be preparing relevant
instructional materials for relevant units. This class, especially this project gave us a lot of
insight on how to be more memorable and colorful teachers, using creative and
extraordinary materials with great aid from technology. With this class and the final project,
as Potatoes, we learned how not to be dull and ordinary teachers with only a board and a
board marker. We learned to be colorful, creative and productive, integrating new materials
and technology to our classrooms.
