How does an author’s voice affect the essay? How can an author establish his or her voice in writing an
essay?

Answer. Answer: Firstly, the author’s voice is the essay he is writing so whatever he writes is what the essay
is to portray. Secondly, in writing an essay, the author must express how he/she thinks about the question,
words need to be formal and straightforward in order to create a strong statement/argument.

The essay “The baby in the backpack” by Patricia Evangelista was about her personal experience after
typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, particularly Tacloban. It was one of the places in the country where
the fatality was one of the highest. In her composition, she talked about the aftermath of the calamity and
how the locals were dealing with it. She has also bared a part of herself, and how she handled the things that
she saw and experienced as a person and as a journalist.
