“EAT BULAGA”
You have been given a portion of pizza to
enjoy, but before you eat you must first find
the area of each.
a. Quarter (90 degrees), r = 12 in
b. Semi-circle (180 degrees), d = 36 in
c. Sector ( π /3), r = 1 ft
d. Sector (11π/12), r = 21 in
4.3 Analysis Analyze the activity using the following questions:
a. How did you find the area of the Each group will show their solutions

you? Explain. classmates.
b. Do you think you solved it correctly?
Yes or No? Explain.
c. In your own understanding, how will
you determine the area of a sector of
a circle.
4.4 Abstraction The Area A of a circle with radius r is given
by A=π r 2 . The circumference C of that
same circle is given by C = 2πr.

The area of a sector of a circle is:

If you know the central angle,
Area ¿ π r
2
( C
360 ° ) or A = r θ
1 2
2
(Students will listen attentively)

where:
C is the central angle (in degrees) the
number of square units it takes to exactly fill
a sector of a circle.
r is the radius of the circle of which the
sector is a part.
π is Pi, approximately 3.1416

If you know the arc length,

1
Area = RL
2
where:
L is the arc length.
R is the radius of the circle of which the
sector is a part.

Notice that when finding the area of a

sector, you are actually finding a fractional
part of the area of the entire circle. The
fraction is determined by the ratio of the
central angle of the sector to the “entire
central angle” of 360 degrees, or by the ratio
of the arc length to the entire circumference.
The second formula can be algebraically
reduced, but it is easier to remember that you
are dealing with fractional parts.

EXAMPLE #1.
Find the area of a sector with a central angle
of 60 degrees and a radius of 10. Express
answer to the nearest tenth.

Solution:
A¿πr
2
( 360C ° )
A = (3.1416)( 10 )
2
( 36060 ° )
A = 314.16 ( 16 )
A = 52.36

EXAMPLE #2.
Find the area of a sector with an arc length of
40 cm and a radius of 12 cm.

Solution:
1
A = RL
2
1
A = (12 cm)(40 cm)
2
1
A = (480 cm 2)
2
480
A= cm 2
2
A = 240 cm 2
4.5 Application (Group Quiz Bee)
The questions will be flashed on the screen.
You need to answer each question within 2
minutes. When the time is up stop writing,
finish or not finish all boards must be raised.

a. Find the area of the dark blue sector Solution:

1
shown at the left. The radius of the A = RL
circle is 4 units and the length of the 2
arc (the curved edge of the sector) 1
A = (4 units)(7.85 units)
measures 7.85 units. Express answer 2
to the nearest tenth of a square unit. 1
A = (31.4 unit 2)
2
31.4 2
A= unit
2
A = 15.7 unit 2
b. Find the area of the shaded sector of
circle O. The radius is 6 inches and
the central angle is 100° . Express Solution:
answer to the nearest tenth of a
square inch. A¿πr
2
( 360C ° )

2
A = (3.1416)(36 ¿ ¿ ( 185 )
c. A cathedral window is built in the 565.49 2
A=
shape of a semicircle. If the window 18 ¿
is to contain three stained glass A = 31.42 ¿2
sections of equal size, what is the
area of each stained glass section? Solution:
Express answer to the nearest square r = d/2 = 5/2 = 2.5 ft.
foot. Semicircle is equal to 180°
So, 180° /3 = 60°
Therefore, each stained glass
sections has 60°

Solve for area of each stained glass
section:
Use A ¿ π r

Direction: Solve the problems, show your solution. 5pts. each.
1. Find the area of a sector of a circle having the radius of 6 cm and subtended by
the central angle with measure 1350.

2. A circle has a radius of 10 inches and subtended by a central angle of radian.
6
Find the area of a sector?
3. Find the area of a sector of a circle with central angle that measure 750 if the

4.7 Agreement Answer the given situation for 10 points. You must show your solution. Write your
answer in your Math Notebook.
