Reaction Paper

The “Dukot Survival” by Manny Montelibano is a great art piece and he shows his
creativity in doing this art. In addition he is a genius man who turn things into become better one
and that makes other people admire it. Moreover, every Filipino can related to it, because most
of us already experience to cook “kaning tutong”. There are people who still eat it, but there are
parents and grandmother or grandfather who prevents their children/s to eat kaning tutong,
because they believe in the saying that “If children’s eat kaning tutong their head becomes
harder. It means that the children might become irresponsible, hard to command and they
disobey people older than them. In addition, Montelibano make this artwork to show to
everyone that even our physical appearance is not just too good like the other and even we feel
that we are left behind and not the chosen one we have still purpose and we can be mold or
develop to become better.

The Dukot Survival merit the term art, because it involves planning, art element and
principle. Also involves man power and effort in making it. Moreover, we considered Manny
Montelibano as an artist, because it is a practitioner who produces a indirectly functional art and
he used imagination to create a creative art. For me the art Dukot Survival is not worth it,
because the price is too high. Yes, it is a wonderful art and it is hard to make and to preserved,
but as we see in reality we can already used that 90,000 to build our house or to buy our basic
necessities for a longer period and to help other people who is in need. This art by Manny
Montelibano made me realized that there are bad things in our life, but those bad things will help
us to become good, to stand again and to fight in our lives. The human figure in the top of kaning
tutong represents that we are more powerful to conquer those bad things, because our God is
with us.

When I have a resources I rather buy Manny Montelibano art, due to that it is very
impressive and I think it is a rare art. I want it to display it in our house, in that way it will
reminds me that even it is a kaning tutong it has an importance in our lives. Just like for example,
you are the last one to eat, because you are so busy in doing school paperwork’s and the only left
is the kaning tutong. You are so hungry, so that you have no choice you eat it just to conquer
hungriness. That makes it important in our lives especially if we are not rich.. If I am a museum
curator I will display it to my venue to convey the meaning or message of the art. Also if I will
display it, I think it is the one that people will look at and they will be impress. In addition, to be
proud that someone who live in the Philippines make that kind of art and to support him to give
pride to our country. This artwork change may idea that art is only the things we see and touch ,
but even the things we taste or eat can be an art. Also the preservation of food is also considered
as art.
