FRACTIONS

Least Common Multiple (LCM)

A common multiple of two numbers, a and b is a number which is divisible by both a

and b. the smaller among these multiplies is the least common multiple denoted by [ a,b]

Example : Find the LCM of 8 and 12.

Solution : we factor 8 and 12.
8=2.2.2=
12= 2. 2. 3 =
The LCM is obtained by writing down the prime factors of each and taking the largest
power of these factors.
[ 8, 12] = 2 . 3 = 8 . 3 = 24
You will note that 24 is divisible by 8, and also by 12.

Greatest Common Factor (GCF)

A common divisor of two numbers a and b , is a number which divides both a and b.
The greatest among these divisors is the greatest common divisor, denoted by (a , b). The
GCD is the largest number that can devide the two or more numbers.

Example . Find ( 36 , 144 )

Solution : 36 = ( 4, 9 ) = 144 = (12)(12) = (3)(4)(3)(4) =
(36, 144) = , the GCD is 36.

Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

When we add or subtract Fractions having the same denominator only the numerators
are added or subtract and the dominator is retained.

a c ad +bc
+ = . , whereb , d≠0
b d b⋅d

2 x 3 y 2 x +3 y
+ =
Example 1. = 5 y 5 y 5y

3 x 7 x 3 (3 x )+5 (7 x ) 9 x +35 x 44 x
+ = = =
Example 2. = 5 3 15 15 15

Multiplication of Fractions

The product of two or more fractions is equal to the product of the numerators divided
by the product of the denominators. The technique of factoring the numerator and
denominator and then cancelling out the common out the common factors will simplify the
resulting fraction.

a c a⋅c
⋅ = , bd≠0
b d b⋅d

( )( )
3x 3
Example: Find the Product of 9 2 z

( )(
3x 3
) 1x x
=
Solution : 9 2 z = 2 z 2 z

Division of Fractions

To perform division of algebraic expression, we use another basic principle which says
a c a d ad
÷ = ⋅ = , bc≠0
that : b d b c bc

3x 6 x 3 x 8a
÷ = ⋅ =1
Example: 4 a 8 a 4 a 6 x

Complex Fractions

any fraction of the form d is called a complex fraction.

Example: Simplify 12 y

3x
4y
9x 3 x 9 x 3 x 12 y
÷ = ⋅ =1
Solution : 12 y = 4 y 12 y 4 y 9 x
