C. WORKING PROCEDURES
ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS CHECK
Measure and record climatic conditions before the work commences including:

 Dew point,
 Relative humidity,
 Ambient temperature,
 Substrate temperatures.
Painting works shall not proceed if:
19250517 - Achmad-Rizal ZAMRONI | Uncontrolled Paper Copy | CMS | 16-08-2021 3:37 PM

 Temperature of the substrate is less than 3oC above dew point

 The relative humidity is more than 85% RH
 The weather is rainy or foggy, except under shelter, and subject to verification of
the atmospheric condition
The minimum or maximum temperature of the ambient atmosphere and the substrate
are not within the limits given in the product data sheets (usually 10°C for epoxy
based paint and 5°C for acryl-polyurethane topcoat).
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surface preparation consists of solvent cleaning followed by hand tool cleaning
and/or power tool cleaning.
C.2.1. SOLVENT CLEANING
All oil, grease, soil and other soluble contaminants on the surface of the
steel shall be removed by solvent cleaning. Before cleaning with solvent,
remove any heavy oil or grease by scraper. Wipe or scrub the surface with
rags or brushes wetted by solvent (cleaner) or fresh water. For final
cleaning, use clean solvent or fresh water with clean rags or brushes.
Ensure there shall be no visible oil, grease and other soluble contaminants
after solvent cleaning.
C.2.2. POWER TOOL CLEANING AND / OR HAND TOOL CLEANING
Cleaning tool used in touch up paint removes all loose mill scale, loose rust,
loose paint and other loose detrimental foreign matter. It is not intended to
remove adherent mill scale, rust and paint. Mill scale, rust and paint are
considered adherent if they cannot be removed by scraper.
Power tools shall be used whenever possible except where the work is
inaccessible for power tools and inadequate of pressured air supply (min.7
bar is required). If there is no power supply for power tools, cleaning by hand
tool can be the last option.

MIXING
1. Clean brushes and paint container with specified thinner as per table 1.
2. Prepare a proper amount of resin (component A) and stir in the container. Make
sure the amount of resin (component A) can be used within expected pot life.
3. Add parts of curing agent (component B) to parts of resin (component A). Mix
thoroughly until uniformly blended. Allow some time (induction time) for the
components to be induced. Make sure amount of materials can be used within
expected pot life. Use thinner when necessary but not exceeding 10% at a time.
4. Always check pot life, induction time, mixing ratio, interval between coat and
thinner type for primer, intermediate, and top coat according to paint product data

sheet

APPLICATION
1. Stripe coat sharp edges and welds before painting. Apply primer using brush
across the surface. Initial strokes shall have parallel orientation. Leave the paint
for about 5 – 10 seconds before starting the subsequent strokes.
2. Apply subsequent strokes in the perpendicular orientation to the previous stroke.
3. Apply each coat evenly across the surface and measure the thickness with WFT
thickness gauge until WFT (Wet Film Thickness) as per table 1 is achieved.
Ensure the coats are complete and seal any pinholes from the previous coat.
Check visually for defect areas or any area not covered properly and repair the
paint as necessary.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 7 for intermediate and top coats. Check and ensure interval
time for each constitution (primer / intermediate) has been passed as per table 1.
This is to allow primer and intermediate fully cured and build their strength by
releasing their solvent to the air.
5. Clean all equipment with specific thinner as per table 1.
Note:
 All painting materials that have been mixed and already exceeding their pot life
cannot be reused and shall be discharged.
 Thinners are not interchangeable (use only thinner for each constitution as per
table 1)

CHECKS AND INSPECTION

Check the following points and record the results:
1. Measure and record coating thickness including Wet Film Thickness (WFT) and
Dry Film Thickness (DFT) of each constitution as per SSPC PA2. The range of
coating thickness (WFT and DFT) is 80% - 120% of specified thickness (WFT
and DFT) in table 1.
2. Examine the finish painting. If surface defects presents, they are to be repaired.
The guideline for repair is listed in section 7.6.
