There are no Reason for Youth to be Outside Late at Night

In this modern times, youth has become more liberated to express what they feel and
more proactive in their decision-makings. Technology and social pressure has aided in these
kinds of behavior. They are extremely outgoing and conscious in their beliefs. They have
more freedom to interact and engage with their age group in a social setting thus going out
more, meeting up new people, and spending more time on social media. Because of these
factors, youth has become more susceptible to depression, bullying, and alcohol and drug
abuse. I believe these can all be prevented by imposing on them a curfew to minimize the
effects of these harmful factors.
Firstly, they are minors and should not be allowed outside late at night especially
during school days except for important occasions or events. We are now living in an
advance era wherein we can communicate with someone even at a great distance or outside
the country, so going out to chat or converse is not deemed necessary anymore unless it is
essential to talk personally or face to face.
Secondly, crimes against youth has increased more these past decades. Most common
are larceny, vandalism, simple assault and alcohol and drug abuse. These youth violence and
crimes may be because of family factors such as poor monitoring and supervision of children
by parents, harsh or lax and inconsistent parental disciplinary practices at home, low parental
involvement in children’s activities; peer pressure like the sense of “fitting in” to be in a
social group, needing to dress or act a certain way, encouraging a peer to fight or bully
someone, pressuring them to try alcohol or drugs to fit in, convincing a friend to skip school;
and social media wherein teenagers are an easy target for cyber-bullying, rumor spreading
and unrealistic view of other people’s lives which then can lead to depression and in extreme
cases suicide.
Last but not the least, staying out late disrupts the school and “home life” of a
teenager because of spending too much time outside. These can greatly affect the family
dynamics at home and can strain family relationships. These can be seen with disagreements
with parents because of outside influences, over-eagerness for parent’s approval that leads to
anxiety, resentment, and depression.
A simple but not harsh solution to these factors would be to impose curfews on youth
as mentioned above. Curfews would install in them the sense of being responsible, to be
conscious of their responsibilities as young adults. Not only would it limit their time outside
but it would also allow them to spend more quality time with their families at home.
Furthermore, it would let them focus on their academic responsibilities as well.
In the long run, it is the duty of the parents to guide and nurture their children to
become responsible adults in the future. Likewise, it is the duty of the youth to listen and
respect their parents.
