STATES OF MATTER WORK SHEET NAME __Alyssa Murray_________________________

PERIOD__10/49_

STATES OF MATTER are natural conditions that materials exist in, and for which we use to identify them. We
know that all matter has mass and takes up space. But all matter does this in four different ways. The four
ways are called “states”. The four states; solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.
SOLIDS are materials which have a definite shape and volume. Under normal conditions they will not change
their own shape. They will not grow or shrink in size.
LIQUIDS are materials that have no definite shape but do have a definite volume. Under normal conditions
they can change their shape depending on their container. Like solids they also will not grow or
shrink in size.
GASSES are materials that have no definite shape or definite volume. Under normal conditions gasses are
always changing their shape and volume.
PLASMA is a gas that has the properties of every other gas, However it has very special abilities. When it
is heated or charged with electricity, it may glow in different colors. It may form “strings”
of light.
FLUID is not a state of matter. Because gasses, liquids, and plasma are always changing their shape, they
are called “fluid”.

Extreme thinking questions

of matter can occupy the same space at the same
time________________________________________________________________________________

gas__________________________________________________________________________________

34. What is the state of matter that is most fun? (To you) Why? @ ___The most fun state of matter to me is a
liquid Why? That is because I can change its shape from a liquid to a solid and from a solid to a liquid. Eg: When
water freezes it turns into ice. I think it is the most controllable state of matter and that’s what makes it fun

35. What are odor, color, weight, shape, sound and hardness? @ _Odor- Is a scent given off from something
Colour- Is the physical property given off when light reflects on an object Weight – This is the physical mass of an
object as gravity of the pulls it towards the core of the earth Shape- This is the form of an onject
Sound- It is a type of energy made by vibrations
Hardness- This is a measure of how difficult or easy it is for a substance to be penetrated or
scratched______________________________________________________________________________
