STATES OF MATTER are natural conditions that materials exist in, and for which we use to identify them. We
know that all matter has mass and takes up space. But all matter does this in four different ways. The four
ways are called “states”. The four states; solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.
SOLIDS are materials which have a definite shape and volume. Under normal conditions they will not change
their own shape. They will not grow or shrink in size.
LIQUIDS are materials that have no definite shape but do have a definite volume. Under normal conditions
they can change their shape depending on their container. Like solids they also will not grow or
shrink in size.
GASSES are materials that have no definite shape or definite volume. Under normal conditions gasses are
always changing their shape and volume.
PLASMA is a gas that has the properties of every other gas, However it has very special abilities. When it
is heated or charged with electricity, it may glow in different colors. It may form “strings”
of light.
FLUID is not a state of matter. Because gasses, liquids, and plasma are always changing their shape, they
are called “fluid”.

2. Define solids. @
_A solid is a state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume The particles is solids are tightly

14. Why are solids, liquids, plasma and gas considered matter? @ _________Solids, liquids and gas are considered
matter because they have mass and take up space

15. Is water the only liquid? If not, name 5 more. @ ______Water is not the only liquid apple juice, milk, blood,
gasoline and wine

16. Is a rock the only solid? If not, name 5 more. @ ___Rock is not the only solid other solids include, chairs, glass,
gold, bauxite and silver

oxygen, methane, nitrogen and hydrogen.

18. What does "definite" mean? @ _______Definite means fixed or a specific amount. Having certain limits or
distinction

31. Can two (or more) types of matter occupy the same space at the same time? @ ______Yes, two or more states
of matter can occupy the same space at the same

33. What is the softest state of matter? @ ___The softest state of matter is a
gas__________________________________________________________________________________
34. What is the state of matter that is most fun? (To you) Why? @ ___The most fun state of matter to me is a
liquid Why? That is because I can change its shape from a liquid to a solid and from a solid to a liquid. Eg: When
water freezes it turns into ice. I think it is the most controllable state of matter and that’s what makes it fun

35. What are odor, color, weight, shape, sound and hardness? @ _Odor- Is a scent given off from something
Colour- Is the physical property given off when light reflects on an object Weight – This is the physical mass of an
object as gravity of the pulls it towards the core of the earth Shape- This is the form of an onject
Sound- It is a type of energy made by vibrations
Hardness- This is a measure of how difficult or easy it is for a substance to be penetrated or
