LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 11

THIRD QUARTER
MARCH 22, 2022

Learning Competency: illustrates the mean and variance of a discrete random

variable. (M11/12SP-IIIb-1)
I. Learning Objectives

At the end of a one-hour period, the students will be able to:

 define mean of the discrete random variable;
 illustrate mean of the discrete variable; and
 solve problems involving mean of the discrete variable
II. Subject Matter
 Topic: Mean of the Discrete Random Variable
 Materials: ICT Media (Laptop, Digital projector, power point, and etc.),
board, marker.
 Reference: Statistics and Probability Quarter 3-Module 1: Random
Variables
III. Procedure
a.) Preliminary activities (5 minutes)
i. Classroom management
ii. Prayer
iii. Checking of attendance
b.) Preparatory activities (5 minutes)
The teacher will task the class to answer the problem below.
Sam scored 98, 25, 105, 62 and 65 run in 5 matches. What was the average
score per match?
Possible response: score of 71
Lesson Proper
A. Activity (10 minutes)
The teacher will task the class to create a group of 5.

Work in your group. Fill in the data needed in the table and calculate the average
of age, height and weight from the data you gathered from your groupmates.
Age Height Weight
Guide questions:
1. Average of Age=_____, Height_____, Weight_____.
2. Average of Age and Height=_____.
3. Average of Height and Weight____.

B. Analysis (5 minutes)
i. The teacher will ask the questions and choose one student to explain their
answer in collaborative approach.
1. How did you find the average of the data collected from your
groupmates?
2. What did you observe upon collecting the data?
C. Abstraction (15 minutes)
Average
Average can simply define as sum of all the numbers divided by the total
number of values.
Mean
It refers to the central point of a specific list of values. In order to find it,
you need to add all of the values together and then divide the result by the
number of values.
- If the set of values are 6, 7, 8, 9:
Mean = (6 + 7 + 8 + 9)/4 = 7.5
Mean of a Discrete Random Variable
The mean µ of a discrete random variable is the central value or average
of its corresponding probability mass function. It is also called as the Expected
Value. It is computed using the formula:
µ = ∑XP(x)
Where X is the outcome and P(x) is the probability of the outcome.
Example:
Determine the mean or Expected Value or random variable below.
X 0 1 2 3 4
P(x) 1/5 1/5 1/5 1/5 1/5

Solution:
µ = ∑XP(x)
= ∑ [0 ( )( )( )( )( )

Steps in finding the Mean
Step 1. Construct the probability distribution for the random variable X
representing the number of items.
Step 2. Multiply the random variable X by the corresponding probability.
Step 3. Add the results obtained in Step 2. Results obtained is the mean
of the probability distribution.
D. Application (10 minutes)
During the development of the lesson, student will work with their pair to
answer the given problem.
Word Problem
The probabilities that a customer will buy 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 items in a
2
∧4
supermarket are 2 1 3 5 , respectively. What is the average number of
, , ,
5 5 5 5
items of that customer will buy?
Answer key:
µ = ∑XP(x)
µ= 8.2
IV. Assessment (10 minutes)
Let the students answer the given problem individually.
Find the mean of the random variable X representing the number if black color
chocolates per 160-gram per pack of colored chocolate packages that has the following
probability distribution.
X 6 7 8 9
P(x) 0.3 0.25 0.4 0.35

Answer key:
µ = ∑XP(x)
µ= 9.9
