Teaching Guide for Normal Distribution

Topic/Lesson Plan Normal Distribution

Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key
concepts of normal probability distribution.
Performance Standards The learner is able to accurately formulate and
solve real-life problems in different disciplines
involving normal distribution.
Learning Competency The learner…
1. Illustrates a normal random variable and its
characteristics.
2. Constructs a normal curve.
3. Identifies regions under the normal curve
corresponding to different standard
normal values.
Specific Learning The learner is able to understand the concepts of
Outcomes normal probability distribution in real life
situations.
Time Allotment 1 hour

Lesson Outline:

1. Introduction
Review of continuous random variables. Ask learners to recall the
definition of a continuous random variable.
Guide Questions:
1. What are the two types of random variables?
2. What is the difference between discrete and continuous random
variable?

Motivation (Pik-Pak-Boom)
Instruction:
1. The teacher will ask the students to count from 1 up to the last number
depending on how many students are in the classroom. The students should
remember their assigned number.
2. The teacher will be the one to say first “Pik-Pak-Boom number 1” for example.
3. As the number of the student was mention he/she will stand as quick as
he/she can.
4. To those students who weren’t stand quickly as their numbers were called
there is a consequence.
Consequence: Ask the students to construct a histogram out of the data
below.

No. of correct

2. Instruction/Delivery

The Normal Distribution and Its Properties

It is a distribution with a bell-shaped appearance. In a normal distribution,

the mean= median=mode.

Properties of Normal Probability Distribution

1. The mean=median=mode
2. The normal distribution curve is unimodal
3. The curve is symmetrical about the mean.
4. The curve is continuous.
5. The curve never touches the x-axis.
6. The total area under the normal distribution curve is equal to 1 or 100%.

Standard Normal Curve

The standard normal curve is a normal probability distribution that is most
commonly used as a model for inferential statistics. The equation that
describes a normal curve is:

1 𝑋−𝜇 2
− ( )
𝑒 2 𝜎
𝑌=
𝜎√2𝜋

Where:
Y= height of the curve particular values of X
X= any score in the distribution
𝜎= standard deviation of the population
𝜇= mean of the population
𝜋= 3.1416
e= 2.7183

The Standard Normal Curve

A standard normal curve is a normal probability distribution that has a
mean μ=0 and a standard deviation 𝜎=1.

Finding Areas under the Standard Normal Curve

Area under standard

normal curve between
0 and z

0 z

Example 1 Determine the area under the standard normal curve between 0 and
1.48

0 1.48
3. Practice
Activity 1: Board work
Instruction: Ask the students to sketch the normal curve given the following
values of mean and standard deviation.

1. 𝜇 =75 and 𝜎 = 10
𝜇 =39 and 𝜎 = 8
𝜇 =55 and 𝜎 = 8 Call random students and let them
𝜇 =80 and 𝜎 = 20 graph the given data on the board.
𝜇 =80 and 𝜎 = 10 Describe the graph.
𝜇 =70 and 𝜎 = 10
𝜇 =100 and 𝜎 = 5

Areas under the Normal Curve

Board work: ask the student to find the area of the following z value.
(show the graph)

1. Find the area to the right of z =1.56

2. Find the area between z=0 and z=-1.65
3. Find the area between z=-1.5 and z=-2.5
4. Find the area between z=-1.35 and z=2.95
5. Find the area to the left of z=2.32

2. Enrichment
Group Activity
Instruction: The students will be group into 5 and each of them will be
given different problem. They are task to graph the normal curve and
present it to the class with a creative visual aid.

1. Sketch a normal curve that has a mean of 15 and a standard

deviation of 4. On the same x-axis, sketch another normal curve
that has a mean of 25 and a standard deviation of 4. Describe the 2
normal curves.
2. Sketch a normal curve that has a mean of 40 and a standard
deviation of 6. And the same x-axis, sketch another normal curve
that has a mean of 60 and standard deviation of 6. Describe the 2
normal curves.
3. Sketch a normal curve that has a mean of 70 and a standard
deviation of 15. And the same x-axis, sketch another normal curve
that has a mean of 70 and standard deviation of 8. Describe the
2normal curves.
4. Sketch a normal curve that has a mean of 60 and a standard
deviation of 12. And the same x-axis, sketch another normal curve
that has a mean of 90 and standard deviation of 6. Describe the 2
normal curves.
5. Sketch a normal curve that has a mean of 25 and a standard
deviation of 9. And the same x-axis, sketch another normal curve
that has a mean of 35 and standard deviation of 9. Describe the 2
normal curves.

3. Evaluation Quiz
I. Instruction: find the area under the normal curve in each of the following
cases.
1. Between z=0 and z=1.63
2. Between z=0 and z=-1.78
3. Between z=1.56 and z=2.51
4. Between z=-1.36 and z=2.55
5. Between z=-2.46 and z=1.55

II. Find the indicated area under the normal curve then convert it to
percentage.

6. What percent of the area under the normal curve is between z= 0.85
and z=2.5?
7. What percent of the area under the normal curve is between z= -1.00
and z=1.00?
8. What percent of the area under the normal curve is between z= -2.10
and z=2.10?
9. What percent of the area under the normal curve is between z= -1.10
and z=-2.43?
10. What percent of the area under the normal curve is between z= 1.03
and z=2.83?
