STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY (Grade 11)
Heads-up
At the end of this week, the learners are expected to:
1.To be able to illustrate the t-distribution
2.To be able to identify percentiles using the t-table

Quick check
Identify whether the given sample is considered SMALL or
LARGE. Put a check mark on the appropriate column.

SAMPLE S L
1. 29 TV set are randomly selected
2. 65 Filipino Teenage girls are selected
3. 26 women are taken as a samples
4. There are 61 textbooks are selected as samples
5. Out of 1440 employees 40 from them are
randomly selected.

Look back
SAMPLE SIZE:
Small sample size is less than 30 (n<30).

In the previous discussion, it was shown that

when the population is normally distributed, or
when sample size is LARGE (n>30), the sampling
distribution is normally distributed, and of course it
is bell-shaped and symmetric to the y-axis.

Look back
However, in many cases where we
can only obtain small sizes, the
normal distribution does not hold
true. Instead, we use the t-
distribution which is the t-
distribution of t-scores..

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY (Grade 11)
Start-up

The formula is used when n<30 and the population standard

deviation is UNKNOWN.

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY (Grade 11)
Start-up
As compared to z-distribution, the t-distribution is more
variable is more variable since its value depends on the
fluctuation of mean and variance from sample to sample.

Recall: from the formula of the standard deviation the

divisor is n-1 (instead of n), which is called “degrees
of freedom, df”

How it’s done
Properties of t
distribution
1.The distribution has mean 0
2.The distribution is symmetric
about the mean.
3.The variance is always
greater than 1, but approaches
1 when df gets bigger.
