A high grade in GCSE Mathematics is not necessarily a good indicator for aptitude at A Level Mathematics. The
emphasis at A level is on algebra: its manipulation, its use in representing problems and its relationship with graphs.
Even in the applied units, a solid appreciation of algebra’s ability to model real life situations is key. The algebra
required at GCSE is confined to very basic techniques and proof, where present, is marginalised. The purpose of this
assessment is to decide whether or not you would be suited to take the AS Mathematics course. If we feel that you
would not be suited, we will advise you accordingly.

The Mathematics assessment does not require knowledge of any algebra beyond GCSE but will test your ability to use
it and apply it at a level that the GCSE does not test but that A level expects to be routine. It will assess your ability to
think through problems and select appropriate techniques.
The assessment is to be taken without calculator and is an hour long. Topics that will be included on the assessment
are as follows: solving quadratic equations by factorisation or completing the square, simultaneous equations
including with quadratics, graph sketching, coordinate geometry, sequences, algebraic fractions and proof.

If you require access arrangements or reasonable adjustments to the assessment, this could be applicants with
disability or learning difficulties, please contact Mrs Bradshaw-Smith (Admissions Co-ordinator) on the email address
shown below.

Please email Mrs Bradshaw-Smith admissions@townleygrammar.org.uk to confirm your attendance; if you are unable
to attend it is essential you contact the school.

We will contact you during week commencing 4th April 2022 with the outcome of your assessment and application.

Yours sincerely
