CHAPTER 3: ONE PAST BUT MANY HISTORIES: CONTROVERSIES AND

CONFLICTING VIEWS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

Lesson 3: Cry of Balintawak or Pugad Lawin

The first outcry of the revolution

served as a historic and symbolic sign for the
Filipinos, especially the Katipuneros who started a
revolution against the Spanish regime. The
revolution movement of the Katipuneros against the
Spaniards resulted to a bloody war to achieve the
prospect independence for the Philippines. In the
past revolutions that happened in our country, the

Revolution against Spain Philippine history remained controversial about where

In August 23, 1896, the Philippine Revolution was

started and led by Andres Bonifacio who founded the
group KKK – Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang
Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan. Furthermore, the
revolution began due to the Spaniards who found out the
secret of the Katipuneros, in which provoked a rebellion
against the Spaniards. The historian Teodoro Agoncillo

cheers. According to the National Historical Commission, oncillo.jpg
Teodoro Agoncillo announced that Bonifacio held a general meeting on August 24,
1896 festival in San Bartolome, Malabon.

This date was chosen to prevent the
Katipuneros from security check points with
their weapons in hand. In August 19, 1896,
Bonifacio and his companions were left in
Balintawak and which they left on August
21, 1896, and on the afternoon of August
22, 1896, they went to Pugadlawin.

simultaneously tore down the cedula (a tax receipt) and shouted "Long live the
Philippines!!!" with fear and praise as an expression of their starting rebellion against the
Spaniards. This is said to have been the historic signal of the beginning of the Philippine
revolution against the Spanish regime. This event marked the so-called "Cry of
Balintawak," which happened in Pugadlawin. Teodoro Agoncillo convinced the National
Historical Commission to move the date from August 26 to August 23 and relocate the
area from Balintawak to Pugadlawin.

On the other hand, according to Dr.

Pio Valenzuela known as Bonifacio's close
friend, said that the first cry occurred on
Balintawak on August 26, 1896. After a few
years, a newspaper appeared after the World
War II claiming that the first cry of revolution
occurred at Pugadlawin on August 23, 1896
KKK – Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang
which caused a big confusion to everyone as Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan

took place. In addition, according to Guillermo 3&ssl=1
Masangkay one of the witnessed of the first
revolution said that it occurred in Balintawak. As well as the autobiography of Gregoria
de Jesus, Andres Bonifacio's wife, that was published in 1928 stated that the first cry of
rebellion took place in the Balintawak. Moreover, according to Julio Nakpil, second

husband of Gregoria de Jesus, he stated that the first cry of revolution occurred in
Balintawak on August 26, 1896.

Weighing both sides of the argument that leads controversy about to where the
first cry of the revolution took place, it is indeed that the first revolution led by Andres
Bonifacio, made one of the reasons of why our country is what it is today. And with the
number of information and many documents being published, it gave us confusion for
we cannot easily tell who is telling the truth because of the incompatibility of the date
and place. Could it be that in the old times it was one of the tactics of our forefathers to
confuse the Spaniards in their plans to keep it a secret?
