Assessment

Assessment 1
Answer the following questions.
1. Give at least three (3) more positive and negative impacts of ICT in the society
aside from those mentioned in this module.

POSITIVE IMPACTS:

● ICT can improve security of the data. Its encryption methods help in keeping data
secure from people with malicious intent. This enables commercial secrecy
within the organization. ICT uses physical security systems to access data such
as face or iris recognition, or fingerprint detection.

● ICT provides a distinctive, and highly innovative set of tools and processes in
areas of photography. Use of photo-editing software, high quality printers, and
digital cameras enables people to yield impressive outcomes.

● ICT also aids people to overcome their disabilities. Screen reading or

magnification software assists blind or partially sighted people to work using
ordinary text instead of using Braille.

● Technology is continually helping to save lives and to improve the quality of life through
advancements in healthcare, from medical research to robotics. Results could be
compared, analyzed, and accessed using specialized software programs. Technology
also made the data that was collected and analyzed easily accessible by other research
teams.

● ICT can be used to access as an entertainment. We can play games, launch digital TV,
Chatting, watch videos, listen to songs, watch or listen to the news, pick up on
individual news items, and many more.

● ICT gadgets help us to do our jobs easier. We can create our own business shops without
the heavy overheads of place, purchase items and sales in the market and make the
advertising campaigns use multimedia applications. This increased sales and
encouraged the small businesses.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS:
● Unemployment: As a result of several companies opting to automate their
manufacturing process, several workers have been laid off. While ICT did not directly
cause these workers to lose their jobs, it was and still remains as one of the causative
factors behind the rising unemployment.
● Addiction: Some ICT related products have proved to be more harmful than others –
such as gaming, mobile phones etc. As a result, young vulnerable teens often get
addicted to online gaming, often playing the same for several hours. This often leads to
their health being impacted, especially their vision.
● Cost: Many ICT gadgets are expensive. So they are cost effective to purchase and to
maintain. Poor students cannot get the benefits of e-learning due to the educational ●
establishments.
● Fake news and misinformation: With the tech advancements moving rapidly, people find it
hard to keep up with what’s true and what’s not.
● Social media’s impact on mental health. Hate speeches and bullying have been easier for
people. For just one click they can destroy a reputation of one person. And that leads to
more mental health problems. Some of the things that can be seen in the media can also
corrupt the mind of a child.
