9. LEAKAGE FROM TUBE
1. Introduction
Tankers carrying different kinds of cargo oil must have their own tanks
throughly cleaned before loading another kind of cargo. In that cases, the
tanks have to be washed with hot sea and fresh water to ensure the required
degree of tank cleanliness. The water is heated by steam or other heating
medium in a heater. DONGHWA shell and tube combined type T. C. Heater
can be efficiently used for the heating duty.

2. Why Tank Cleaning is Carried Out

Tankers have their own cargo carrying space on board divided into tanks
separated by bulkheads. When the ship has unloaded, there will always be
residues of the products left in the tanks. These residues must be removed
for two main reasons.

1) Explosion risks
2) Contamination of new cargo

2-1) Explosion risks

If the cargo has been petroleum products, distillates, etc. the
residues will gasify with the consequent risk of explosion. To
minimize explosion risks insert gas pumped into the tanks during
the cleaning process and as long as the tank in empty.

3. Tank cleaning procedures

Tankers can be divided into three main groups :
1) Curde oil tankers
2) Product tankers
3) ----.
Parcel tankers

3-1. Curde oil tankers

Oid ships have tank cleaning systems using hot seawater.. Nek. ships,
however, wash their tanks with crude oil that has not passed through
a heater before being delivered to the washing machines.
3-2. Product tankers
Product tankers carry, for instance, various refined petroleum products
and most ships use hot seawater for the washing machines.

3-3. Parcel tankers

These ships carry various kinds of chemicals and are very dependent
on hot washing water for efficient cleaning in order not to contaminate
the new cargo taken on board.
The washing procedure starts with hot seawater, and is followed by
hot freshwater. This freshwater is obtained from the fresh water
distillers since the tap water contains too much impurities(ch1orides)
which would seriously contaminate many types of products. -
The following description applies mainly to the system on board parcel
tankers.

4. The Tank Cleaning System

Every tank is provided with one or more washig machine facilities as shown
in Fig. 1

Fig.1 Tank cleaning system

O=connection for washing machine -
4-1. Washing water is supplied to the washing .machines through a pipe
system on deck. The washing machines can be permanently mounted
inside the tanks, normally several to a tank, Fig.2 or of portable
design, Fig 3
Portable machines are connected to pipes on deck by hoses and moved
manually from connection to connection.

4-2. The seawater or freshwater is supplied by a tank cleaning water pump or
one of the cargo pumps. The water is pumped up to the pump room
casing located aft of the tanks. The heater is located in the pump room
cashing Fig.4, and hot water from the heater is supplied to pipes on
deck. Alternatively, the heater can be located in the engine room which
is often a better location where there is more space, no risk of freezing
and it is dry.

b f Pump room casing

Fig.4 Heater located in the pump room casing

The water is heated by means of steam from a steam boiler in the he engine
room. Fig.5, shows a principal layout of the system up to the pzint of
connection to the pipes on deck. Some installations also have a parallel
freshwater system with its own pump and heater Fig.6
5. Construction of Tank Cleaning Heater
DONGHWA T. C. Heater was mainly consisted with heating unit and control
system as sketched dwg. Fig.7. S. W is heated to the required temp.
normally 80 by the heating medium(norma11y steam) and meanwhile the steam
was condensed and subcooled in a same unit. Therefore separate drain
cooler is not needed. Sea water outlet temperature was controlled
automatically by the accurate P. I functioned pneumatic temperature
controller, in special case, direct acting control valve was used. In addition
to that, steam drain temp was controlled to the required temp.
normally 90 by the P. 1 functioned level controller heater body were
composed of water box, tube sheet, cooling tube and shell. During operation
if the cooling tubes were damaged. The damaged tubes are to be plugged
immediately on board and then those tubes can be ~eplacedfrom new one at
shore side. When replaced tubes, if some trouble was occured it is
preferable to contact manufacturer to discuss how to repair.

6. Operating Instruction
1) Heating Sea Water Side (Water Channel)
(a) Manipulate the valve so that each fluid will flow in a gradual manner.
(b) Keep the air vent valve under the ever-slightly-opened condition.
Care should be taken so as not to let the air gather in the water
channel or tube inside.
( c ) Check with the flowmeter if furnished so that flow rate will not exceed
the designed value.
(d) Record periodically the inlet and outlet temperatures, pressure and
flow of each fluid.
(e) For the flow control, use the outlet valve. Do not use the Inlet valve
for this purpose. Keep the inlet valve constantly full open.

2) Steam Side (Shell)

At starting up, open the air vent valve fully. After confirming the air
completely vented, tighten up the valve.
7. Maintenance
1) Exchange of protecting anode ------ every G(six) months
Portecting anodetzinc) is furnished to protect anode cover which is
attached to the water channel and reversing cover with stud bolt.
Therefore, protecting anode can be renewed without taking off the water
channel. Installation procedure of protecting anode is as follows.

Caution : If the operation kept going on when the anode is worn out,
following accidents are possible to happen. So do not fall to
replace the protecting anode before i t becomes worn-out.
One protecting anode can last about 6 months, but it is
influenced by the operating condition, sea water temperature,
and other environmental factors. Therefore, at the begi~nlflg
stage of operation, make inspection at the Interval of about
three months. -
(1) Water channel and cover get corroded
(2) Inside of the inlet part of the cooling tube and the surface
of the tube plate yield galvanic corrosion.

-
8. Cleaning
Cleaning must be carried out when the following phenomena are found.
(a) In case the scale is found on the inside or outside surface of cooling
tubes by checking when the specified temperature can not be obtained
for inlet and outlet of fresh water.

(b) In case the scale is found on the inside or outside surface of cooling
tubes by checking on the other case, such as overhauling. Overhauling
must be carried out every one year.

1) Check
When checking the tube inside's furface, as to the tube side, take off the
protecting anode cover or water channel or cover. As to the shell side,
when checking the tube outside's surface, take off the cover plate of peep
hole.

2 ) Cleaning of Tube Side

(1) Discharge the drain completely
(2)Take off the protecting anode
(3) Take off the blind flange installed on the water channel and inject
cleaning chemicals.
(4) Leave it as it is for 3 hours to 5 hours. Or force it to circulate for an
hour or two with chemical cleaning circulation pump.
(5) Discharge the cleaning chemicals completely, and inject the sea water
to rinse the inside.

CAUTION
When taking off the water channel arld the reversing cover, follow the
following procedures in order to undo the bolt which tightens up the
shell flange, tube plate and channel flange. At the tube plate pak, the
through bolt and the stud bolt are alternately arranged with each other.
Therefore, at first take off the nut only at the channel side or at the cover
side, and then take off the through bolt. Never loosen the nut at the shell
side of stud bolt. Please note that if the nut of stud bolt at shell side is
loosened, leakage is brought about from the gasket between the shell
flange and the tube plate. For the details of the through bolt and the stud
bolt, please refer to the illustration on the next page.
9. Leakage From Tube
In the following cases, there might be a leakage from tube.
So please check by the pressure test.

(1) Extraordinary decrease or increase of fresh water

(2) When sea water outlet temperature rises too high comparing with normal
value
(3) When the shell inside gives an extraordinary sound

If a leakage from the tube is admitted by the check mentioned in 4. or check

at overhauling, repair the tube in the following procedures.

(1) Leakage from the expanded part

Re-expand the tube with an expand tool. If the leakage does not stop in
spite of expansion, plug u the tube or renew it. -.
-
(2) When the tube is corroded or damaged to cause leakage, renew the
tube or plug it up. Plug is delivered as one of the spare parts.
A NOTE

To be kept the velocity of tube side as follows ;

- ..
3

Material Max. velocity ( mls )

1 Al-Brass 1.8
2 Cu-Ni ( 90110 ) 2.0
3 Cu-Ni ( 70130 ) 2.3

Those max. velocity above for each materials is recommended by tube

makers.
If the actual velocity on tube side were higher than max. one by being
overflowed, compared to the specified quantity of cooling media which
is
mentioned on drawing, Donghwa Entec. should not responsible for
above
conditions.
The overflow of tube side should make a serious problem, especially
erosion,
which strongly results in the damage of tubes.
