Treatment
Music videos.
For my documentary, I want to talk about the music video industry. I will go deep into the
studies and history of how music videos are shot. I also would like to talk about the sorts of
techniques used in creating music videos.
I would like to talk about how music videos are shot to complement the music, and how the
music videos help portray the hidden message behind the song. I also plan to show off
some of my own skills by trying out a technique that professionals use.
I also plan to do an interview with one of the video lecturers at the college to get his
professional answers to some questions about the music video industry.
The 2 music videos I want to talk about to show the change in technology are Bohemian
Rhapsody by Queen from 1975 and Stay by kid Laroi 2021. You can really see how
technology has changed in the 149 years that the industry has been about.
One big change you can see from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ (bering
in mind this is the remastered version from 2009) to https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=kTJczUoc26U you can see that it is more about the music less about the story in
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen where as in stay it is more based on visual effects and a
storyline. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen shows off the band and a performance of the
song. In the modern song Stay by kid Laroi there is also a placement of an advert (Beats
earphone) Another product example POST MALONE white iverson(ROLLS ROYCE +
MERCEDES-BENZ)
The edit style I am planning on using for this music video documentary is a fast paced style
edit with moving pictures and images. I like and have been influenced by the youtube
channel WatchMojo.com (https://www.youtube.com/@WatchMojo). I really like their edit
style because for example let's say they were talking about the top 10 films of 2022, they
would show/ use clips from that film to really show off what they were talking about and
emphasise the point of their message/ information.
I would like to present my documentary in a way that engages the audience. My idea is to
have visual pictures and my own spoken voice giving facts and information about the
subject.
I also plan to have some calming music in the background to add to the atmosphere and
overall delivery of this music video documentary. Without the music I feel like it might sound
a bit robotic and mundane. The sort of music I would like to use is some sort of lofi music
because I was thinking of using some happy generic music but I feel like that would feel too
“youtube-ish" and not as professional as I would like this music video documentary to be. I
have a youtube chanel (playlist) I would like to possibly use. “
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH-SnQ8J1VU&list=PLfP6i5T0-
DkIMLNRwmJpRBs4PJvxfgwBg”. I fell like this would complement the style of my video and
help keep the viewers attention like I said before I wants it upbeat and not just me being like
“ok guys today this is a music video.
My main inspiration for this documentary was the YouTuber Ramzoid and in particular these
2 videos ‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHKXGVUaSSE’ and
‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7F4o-bCNzM’. I like these music videos because they
have an old-time feel with the influence of modern music.
To actually create my project I would like to have voiceovers and video clips from famous
music videos. I will probably film the voiceovers using my phone.
I will then have one section of this documentary talking about the key/ most influential people
in the music video industry. I can talk about some people who have pioneered the music
video industry and some people and maybe some people who are the most famous today in
the music video industry.
I will then give a brief history on music videos: this will include me talking about what they
used to consist of back in the day. I will talk about how back:
“In the radio era no one really planned for music videos because you can’t see a video on a
radio. As TV became more popular it added more pressure for artists to not only sound good
but look good.”
I can look at 1975 (Queen Bohemian Rhapsody) all the way to now 2021 (Stay Kid Laroi).
Then I will explain how technology has helped them evolve into what they have become
today and how more advanced music videos can be.
Then this leads onto me trying my own filming technique out
For the ideas Then I want to get from talking about old music to more modern music as
shown here “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7F4o-bCNzM” I will then focus on one
technique they used in this video and try to remake it myself. One idea I could try is
perspective zoom like the one you can see at 46 seconds in the music video I just linked.
While showing off my own skills and trying out the techniques I will be talking through what I
have done to create this kind of shot.
To actually present my work I want to have it in a simple but effective style. Most of my
documentary apart from my own skill and the interview part will be made mostly of pictures
and clips of examples of professional work.
I will then do a conclusion talking about how the key skills I have identified and how they are
important to the music video industry. And towards the end I can have a segment/ short bit
talking about how it's not just filmmakers who have been changed by the music video
industry but also the fashion and style industry. (kind of like an honourable mention to them
at the end seeing as this is a media film documentary). This is like a wrap up of the whole
documentary and what I have been talking about to bring the documentary to a closing point.
I want to end by bringing all of the information into one final point. For example I could say
“And this is how music videos got from what they used to be all the way back in the____ to
where they are now in 2022”
I will be writing a script to go along with this documentary. Each part of my sript will consist
of key facts and information about that area. For example I'll have a section talking about the
history and I might say “the founder of music videos _____ was born in_____ and has been
doing this since ____” . When I show off my own skill I plan to also have spoken voice over
dialog talking about how and what I have done to create this shot type.
Proposal
For this documentary I plan to base it around music videos and the music video industry
through time. I want to talk about some key influential people and how the industry has
evolved from the 70s -21st century. This will include talking about technology.
The edit will be moving images and pictures with my own clips I have filmed showing off my
skills. I will also include an interview from a professional video person.
The key resources required are the college macs with Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After
Effects to edit with.I will also need headphones to hear back my edit and voice over. I also
need some sort of recording device to record with this will most likely be my smartphone
(Iphone). I will also need a camera and microphone to record the interview and just the
camera to do my own attempt at the filming technique.
Interview will be with Paul Ralph one of the video production lecturers at The Bournemouth
and Poole college. I want to ask him a question based on his own opinion on if he thinks
technology has improved the industry in a good or bad way. And just sorts of questions like
that.
There are 2 main videos I want to talk about to show the change in the industry throughout
time. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen from 1975 https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ (bering in mind this is the remastered version from 2009) to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTJczUoc26U Stay by kid Laroi 2021.
My target audience for this documentary is people of all ages. This is due to the fact that
everyone of any age can enjoy a music video. The fact I will be talking about old and new
music videos means I can target the old and the young. However people who are looking
into media and specifically music videography might like to watch my documentary to find
out some knowledge about the industry and the history that went into making it what it is
today. Even though this is a documentary they may find and/or learn a new skill that they
did not know before watching. I won't be giving a full on tutorial but they can see the name if
the techniques I’m showing and possibly do further research into the skill if they want to
learn how to do it for themselves
The I will wrap up by bringing the key point I have been talking about to a closing point to
sum up the entire documentary and give closer to what I have been talking about
