1. WELCOME

1.1 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL - PROF MAGNATE NTOMBELA

The legendary and much loved Prof Yusuf Mahomed Karodia founded
MANCOSA in order to provide access to affordable and quality education
to all. More than two decades later, MANCOSA continues to provide
education that is relevant and is geared towards positively impacting
lives. As our vision boldly states, we aim to offer education for a better
world for all.

Technological advances and the unprecedented global crises, like

COVID-19 and instability in global markets, have drastically changed the
world of work. Commensurate with the new challenging environmental
landscape, institutions cannot continue to ignore the changing needs of
a global employment market.

MANCOSA’s mission is to impact lives through innovative education, an

education that prepares a new breed of leaders: courageous individuals with the intellectual abilities, cross
cultural versatility, practical skills and an ethical disposition, ready to function in a modern business world. With
programmes designed to accommodate individuals with diverse needs and lifestyles, MANCOSA’s supported
distance education programmes are in constant demand. MANCOSA’s programmes have the rigour and
innovation to develop reflective practitioners in the quest to educate for impact. Students are immersed in study
that will challenge their assumptions, disrupt their ordinary ways of tackling stubborn business challenges, and
introduce them to new and unexpected ways of thinking. On completion of their studies, MANCOSA graduates
are imbued with confidence and professional values that enable them to be innovative problem solvers and team
players that add value to any enterprise and also live their lives as well-rounded and informed global citizens.

MANCOSA’s programmes promote the development of critical 21st century transferable skills through innovative
teaching and learning. You can expect a carefully integrated mix of webinars, access to well-designed self-study
materials, and online learning resources. One key feature of MANCOSA is its use of case studies, an active
learning model that teaches students how to assess, analyse, and act on complex business issues. Rooted in real-
life experiences, the business case method develops analytical skills, sound judgment, and the leadership
potential within each individual. This will equip you with cutting-edge skills that will position you to be a leader
in your organisation and community.

2. INTRODUCTION TO MANCOSA

2.1 BRIEF HISTORY OF MANCOSA

MANCOSA is a private higher education institution registered in terms of the Higher Education Act (Act 101 of
1997 as amended). It was established in 1995 as a post-apartheid empowerment institution offering affordable
and accessible management education primarily to persons previously denied access to postgraduate education.

One of MANCOSA’s flagship programmes, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree has been offered
since 1995 (in association with the Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College and quality assured by the
Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education of the United Kingdom until 2000). Since 2000, all MANCOSA
programmes are accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) in South Africa.

During the past 28 years, MANCOSA has developed a large footprint across South Africa and has accumulated
extensive experience in meeting the educational needs of a wide range of students through the delivery of high
quality programmes.

In responding to the training and education requirements of the labour market, MANCOSA has diversified its
programme offerings through the establishment of a number of schools. MANCOSA’s prestigious Graduate
School of Business [GSB] serves as an innovation hub to underscore the delivery of postgraduate management
programmes, including two of the institution’s flagship programmes; the MBA degree and the Doctor of Business
Administration (DBA) degree. MANCOSA’s School of Education [SOE] delivers a range of 21st century teacher
education programmes in order to meet the needs of the education profession. More recently, MANCOSA’s
programme offerings were further augmented through the creation of the modern School of Information and
Digital Technology [SIDT]. The SIDT attracts students seeking to advance their skills and qualifications as
technology professionals, whilst also catering to students who may work in a variety of other industries and who
are seeking to operate effectively as digital citizens, digital artisans, leaders and innovators.

In 2017, MANCOSA became a proud member of Honoris United Universities, the first Pan-African, private higher
education network committed to preparing and educating the next generation of African leaders and
professionals who are able to impact regionally in a globalised world.

MANCOSA’s reputation for academic excellence and strong research focus is reflected in numerous rankings and
external agency evaluations as well as the recognition and accreditation it holds in numerous countries.

8.1 Method of Assessment

Each module is assessed as follows:

Formative Assessment 1 – These are online assessments. These assessments are in the form of multiple-choice
questions, true/false or a combination of both. The knowledge check quizzes assess students’ understanding of
key concepts and theories and is designed to stimulate students’ active and self-managed learning.
Formative Assessment 2 – This assessment is based on a case study/scenario which requires calculations and/or
application to the relevant theory. This provides students with a feel for the complexities of the working world
and allow the theories, models and research to be applied in practice.
Online Summative Assessment – This is an open book assessment that is similar in nature to the traditional
examination. The main premise for an open book assessment is to allow students to answer in more critical and
analytical ways, thus encouraging higher order thinking skills. An open book assessment assesses the
understanding of the learning outcomes of the module and tests the ability to understand and provide innovative
solutions to complex challenges.

8.6 MANCOSA Student Comms App and OSA authentication process

In order to ensure the security of the Online Summative Assessments (OSAs), MANCOSA utilises a mobile
application for students to authenticate and gain access to these assessments. Additionally, results for both
formative and summative assessments are released to students via the Student Comms App. As such, it is critical
for all students to download the app and complete their stage one authentication upon registration.

The Student Comms App can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Stores as indicated in section
6.2.4. Students are required to upload a copy of their ID and take a live selfie in order to complete stage one of
the authentication process. Once the first stage of authentication is successful, students will be able to access
their formative assessment results under the results tab, as well as their upcoming OSA timetable under the
documents tab when this becomes available.

On the day of an OSA, prior to commencing the assessment, students are required to take a live selfie which will
be matched to the selfie taken during their stage one authentication process, and will receive a One Time Pin

two authentication process, students will gain access to their OSA on MANCOSAConnect.
