Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
Humans make choices, big and small, that have far-reaching consequences in one's lives.

As a person ages, his or her decision-making abilities improve, allowing the person to make

better and more informed life decisions. Failure to make the appropriate judgment frequently

results in failure. Students who have completed high school may not be sure where they want to

go to college or what degree program they want to pursue. They intend to enroll in college but

have no notion what job path they want to take (Ramirez & Dizon, 2014). They may think about

the people and information they get in their environment at times.

Some parents believe that what they advise to their children in terms of what to pursue is

superior, but they often neglect what their children want. Some social variables impact students'

job choices, most notably the parents as immediate family members who play an active part in

determining the best education for their children. Parents or the elderly are consulted first by

their children as a demonstration of respect for their parents and culture, because they will be the

ones to offer the financial support to attend college. Financial stability, university status, and

practicality all seem to be important considerations. As a result of these factors, some students

graduate from courses they dislike. Others, on the other hand, were able to confidently pursue

their selected course and graduate with great spirits. There are various elements that may

influence students' and parents' decisions, and private higher education institutions can use this

information to provide excellent services that meet the community's requirements, expectations,

and desires.

1

The degree to which students perceive the world and their future can influence how they

choose a suitable career and school. Some of them may lack sufficient knowledge and awareness

of how to digest information from personal, social, economic, political, spiritual, and

environmental perspectives in order to put it into context and realize the goal of having a

successful profession. Students can properly utilize their skills and knowledge to gain proper

experience that can contribute to the development and welfare of society, according to Pafili and

Mylonakis, (2011). However, Koni, Zainal, and Ibrahim, (2012), pointed out that some studies

show that not all students who enter a university have the intention of obtaining a degree. The

most crucial component of education is career guidance. Education is like an undirected stream

of water that fails to join the river without suitable job counseling in schools. Students that are

well-informed and confident will be more determined to pursue their chosen vocation and will

not allow obstacles stand in their way.

Shipping has been an important human activity throughout history. In fact, transportation

has been called one of the four cornerstones of globalization, along with communications,

international standardization, and trade liberalization. The Philippines has a long history in the

maritime industry which continues to contribute to the economic growth of the country. The

expanding number of tertiary schools offering under- and postgraduate marine programs has

changed the nature of maritime education from a strongly practical, hands-on approach to tertiary

education stressing business and analytical abilities.

Theoretical Framework

This study's theoretical framework was based on Haur's (2009) theory of higher

education issues and trends. This study focused on the factors that influence first-year BS Marine

Transportation students' decision to enroll in the BS Marine Transportation course at Isabela

College of Arts & Technology (ICAT). According to Haur (2009), six factors influence students'

decision to attend a particular college. This covers the cost of school, the impact of significant

others (family members, friends, peers, and teachers), and the degree's content and organization.

Furthermore, the expense of education, physical surroundings, facilities and resources,

the value of education, and the intention to study differ significantly between men and women.

Female students seem to be more cost-conscious, concerned, recognize quality more, and have a

deeper passion to learn than male students, according to the study. Furthermore, there is

insufficient evidence to suggest that students from various academic backgrounds differ

significantly in the factors that influence their desire to attend a higher education institution.

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter consists of definitions, previous and recent articles, discussion, arguments, and
journal review of authors that will provide evidence and support to the study. Local and foreign
related studies are included as well.

Foreign Literature

According to Chitra et al., (2013), there are four key kinds of characteristics that

influence students' preference for Higher Learning Institutions. Quality of education, campus

amenities and atmosphere, external and financial issues, and advertising and publicity are all

elements to consider. The influence of family members, teachers, and friends are all external

variables. Advertisement and publicity rank last among the four key categories. Institution

websites, published materials, the impact of institution spokespeople, and advertising are all key

factors in this area. Interest is a content-specific motivational trait consisting of intrinsic

feeling-related and value-related valence (Schiefele, 1991). According to Ainley et al., (2022),

specific patterns of individual interests and how they influence student engagement with learning

have not been fully investigated. In addition to identifying students' precise patterns of individual

interests, it's crucial to figure out how individual interests at various levels of generality

influence student learning.

Students' desire to learn is linked to their fear of learning. In every decision process, a

person's interest is crucial. A manifestation of a different inclination toward acts, events, or plans

is a distinguishing trait of interest. A student's desire to succeed academically will lead him to

behave and act in specific ways toward his academics (Ogbuanya & Owodunni, 2013).

8
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

Identifying a student's level of interest in pursuing a specific program of study may help to

explain their subsequent behavior in building a good or negative attitude toward their academic

life (Ramirez et al., 2014). Additionally, Smith, (2002), stated that personal experiences can

influence one's interests.

According to Kumar, (2016), respondents' perceptions of their father's expectations had a

statistically significant influence on their career choice. Furthermore, a statistically significant

main effect between respondents' career choice and their father's occupation was investigated.

This means that the respondent's father's occupation and expected father's preference were found

to have a statistically significant impact on respondents' career choice decisions. Furthermore, in

the research of Koçak et al., (2021), it was discovered that family influence, academic

satisfaction, parental education level, and work experiences all have a significant impact on

career decision, self‐esteem as well as happiness. It was also discovered that entrepreneurial self

had a mediating effect on happiness, and that parents’ education had a moderating effect.

Synthesis

The aforementioned foreign literature implies that father and mother occupations were

found to be statistically significant predictors of career choice. On career choice, the combined

interaction effect of the respondent's father's perceived expectation and his occupation was

statistically significant. This implies that respondents have no other options, or that their father is

the primary source of their professional identity. In connection with this, the influence of family

members are indeed important to the decision of each and every student. Parents' high

expectations can lead youths to pursue hobbies that they believe would gain their parents'

approval.

9
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

Some parents, for example, reprimand their children for not getting straight A's or

criticize them for choosing art over a practical career like law or medicine. In certain situations, a

teenager may feel compelled to pursue a prestigious or high-paying career in order to gain her

parents' respect or to make them proud. When parents make it obvious that they have no specific

expectations for their child's career, they are more likely to explore a wider range of options and

make a decision based on their own preferences rather than those of their parents.

Foreign Studies

According to Fizer 's research in 2013, family was the most influential factor in students'

major selection, with 27 percent of students responding in this manner. The next most important

factor in deciding on a major was a personally rewarding career (21 percent). When it came to

choosing a major, the remaining 25% of students said the most influential factors were job

opportunities, teachers, campus visits, friends, income potential, or guidance counselors.

According to Lau (2021) research findings, students chose a maritime university primarily

because it is accredited by a professional unit (368.8%), but also because it has a practical

orientation (33.9 percent).

As shown in a survey conducted by Noel-Levitz (2012), remarks and support from a

close friend or family member are an important influence in determining a student's college

choice. Furthermore, information from previous students and parents' preferences have a

significant impact on students' choice of course (Shammot, 2011).

According to the findings of Naz et al., (2014), peers and friends have a considerable

impact on career and academic choices. Parents normally take the lead in transferring values in

the socialization process and personality development, but peers and friends appear to play the

10
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

most essential role in modifying lifestyles, appearances, decision-making, and even educational

choices. Peers and friends affect academic and career decisions, as per findings of this study.

Peers and friends have a beneficial impact on subject choice, class selection, laboratory, library,

and book selection, as well as homework and co-curricular activity facilitation, according to the

statistics. Peers and friends influence career decision making, professional career, job selection,

employment chances, and earning trends, according to statistics on career decision-making. It

was established that peers and friends play an essential part in peers' and friends' career decision

making processes after enlightening and analyzing the outcomes of the given material in

connection to the tables and hypothesis.

Synthesis

The above studies are based on text analysis and field data, and it examines the nature,

level, and extent of peer and friend impact on an individual's career decision-making process. It

is impossible to overstate the prevalence of undergraduate students picking the wrong

professional path. This is because there are numerous elements that have a significant impact on

students' job choices. When it comes to deciding on a career, the majority of people can become

exceedingly perplexed. Others' professional choices, as well as the influence of parents,

guardians, spiritual directors, and even peer groups, can cause uncertainty.

Peers and friends are significant aspects of the socialization process, and their effect and

pressure in influencing and molding the course of an individual's life has been widely

acknowledged. Peer pressure has a significant impact on profession choice since they have a way

of portraying their preferred career as superior to others'. They have a tendency to impose their

viewpoint on others and push them to agree with their career choice.

11
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

Local Literature

In the Philippines, the family is the basic unit of society. Most Filipinos are emotionally

close to their families. Some of the important decisions are highly influenced by its family

members. According to Aguado et al. (2015), parents have had a significant influence,

particularly a mother's decision to pursue a specific degree and a father's decision to attend a

specific school, followed by teachers and friends. Since they're the ones who will pay the tuition

fees, parents are considered the most influential people in deciding and convincing their children

where to study. As per Lacar et al. (2020), students' college course selection was influenced in

some way by family factors. As a result, it appears that respondents' families have a moderate

influence on their educational studies, which may be a useful tool for determining the best career

path for them.

As can be seen, the majority of students agree that their financial situation should be

taken into account when selecting a course, with the highest mean of 3.2159. This supports the

claim made by Saysay in 2014, that the family determines which career path students should

pursue, which is also linked to the family's financial situation. While students have a moderate

disagreement when it comes to their family's dominant profession in course selection, with a

mean of 2.2159. Since their college courses do not correspond to their parents' occupation, the

students were observed to disregard their family's dominant occupation. Whereas, students are

moderately dissatisfied with their friends' career choices, with course selection preferences

having the lowest mean of 1.7955. This finding contradicts (Alba, 2016), who claims that peer

pressure influences career choices because people who are close to their friends frequently

follow their friends' decisions.

12
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

Due to varying degrees of experiences encountered by the students, levels of interest in

their degree program may fluctuate from time to time. A worrisome study of Filipino students

suggests that they thrive at acquiring knowledge but perform poorly in subjects that need higher

order thinking skills (Patena & Dinglasan, 2013). According to De Mesa (2012), students must

study harder and complete all of the prerequisites for each course, and these obligations will put

their drive and enthusiasm to the test.

Synthesis
According to studies, the family appears to play an important role in a child's career

growth. Families, particularly parents and guardians, have an important role in their children's

professional aspirations and career goal development. Students and young adults are typically

hesitant to pursue—or even explore—diverse employment options without parental approval or

support. The majority of Filipinos have strong emotional bonds with their families. Some of the

most essential decisions, such as career choice, are heavily impacted by family members.

Since Filipino children hold their parents in high regard, they tend to be traditional and

understand that it is their responsibility to follow their parents' orders and norms, even when they

are older and have their own family. This is how Filipino parents educate their children so that

when they become parents, they can pass on their knowledge to their offspring. Parental

judgment has a significant impact on the academic, professional, and personal lives of children.

A student's well-being is heavily influenced by his or her Filipino family. Filipino parents always

have a say in their children's lives, which is one of the reasons why the extended family is

ingrained in every Filipino's culture.

13
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

Local Studies

The enthusiasm of students to overcome the problems of a particular college degree can

be linked to their level of interest in the program. Interest is an internal motivating component

that promotes a person's desire to achieve better or more than what is expected of him.

According to the study of Miranda (2008), Expectancy Theories are theories of behavior that

stress on people's expectations of success in achieving a goal, as well as their need for

achievement, as energizing variables. Additionally, Laguador (2019), stated that the importance

of what students are learning increases their motivation and offers a solid foundation for them to

carry out their obligations and strive harder to attain their goals.

In the Philippines, the Maritime program is a well-known college degree for male

students who want to go abroad and earn more money. According to the Commission on Higher

Education's enrolment data for 2018-2019, the maritime program had 87,960 enrollees (or 2.7

percent) from pre baccalaureate to doctoral programs as of June 30, 2019, out of 3,212,542

enrolled students in all levels and programs of all HEIs in the Philippines, making it the 9th most

populated discipline group. In 2018, there were 17, 634 marine graduates, or 2.35 percent, out of

a total of 751,310 graduates. For the last five years, the number of enrollment in the Maritime

program has decreased by about half, from its highest peak of 161,229 total enrollees during

Academic Year 2014-2015. The maritime industry is one of the world's largest, and it requires a

huge number of trained and highly skilled graduates to maintain the productivity and efficiency

of all economic activities involving people and goods transported by water. Higher Education

Institutions are required to provide educational services and curriculum offerings that meet the

14
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

demands of the Philippine Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the International

Maritime Organization (IMO) (Laguador, 2019).

Synthesis
Based on the studies mentioned above, the field of marine industry in the Philippines is

continuously growing and developing. There are already a lot of various institutions that provide

education regarding maritime. With this, there is a demand of enrollees in connection to marine

programs. Someone may be motivated to pursue their degree programs because they want to

complete them in a certain amount of time. People who are passionate about their degree

program are more likely to develop good study habits. When students have a strong interest in

the degree program, they are more motivated to learn more about the subject and go above and

beyond to learn more about the job alternatives.

Furthermore, students anticipate a positive outcome from obstacles rather than a negative

impact on their performance. Due to a lack of enthusiasm or interest, students may have

pondered dropping enrolled classes or even leaving schooling. When admitting students to a

certain program of study, it is an important factor to consider. Identifying this phase may assist

children and their parents in addressing some concerns about the students' interests. Attempting

to make parents aware of their children's interests in their enrolled program may provide them

with basic information and a deeper understanding of how to handle and advise their children,

while also nurturing and intellectually stimulating students' interests in a coordinated effort and

involvement for the university.

A mean of 1.79 is highly influenced to take a BS Marine Transportation course by the

fact that they have a passion in the field of Marine Transportation, followed by a mean of 1.73

who have answered that they are motivated to be a future seafarer. On one hand, a mean of 1.76

is highly influenced by the fact that they find it exciting to work in the field of Marine

Transportation. Additionally, a mean of 1.85 is highly influenced to take the said course since

they would like to have a good salary in the future. Lastly, a mean of 1.71 is highly influenced by

the fact that they like to travel and see new places. This implies that the average weighted mean

is 1.77 and the majority of the First Year BS Marine Transportation students are highly

influenced by their Personal Interests.

27
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

In connection with this, individuals choose professional situations that best fit their

personality and interests, according to Holland's thesis of "Career Typology" (Holland, 2009).

Parents, teachers, friends, and life events all contribute to one's personal interests. Interest is

crucial in inspiring people to complete undertakings that they want. A strong and driving passion

in something will encourage you to give it your all. Personality types and interests, for example,

are a factor that influences students' profession choices in Kenya, according to studies conducted

in various countries and cultures (Ahmed et al., 2017).

In their research paper, Ahmed (2014) and AlMiskry, Bakar, and Mohamed (2009)

emphasized the importance of students' interest in determining career decisions. They discovered

that students' interest in a vocation is determined by their likes and dislikes. The lack of interest

in activities connected to careers and occupations affects students' career choices.

AVERAGE 2.05 Influenced

Based on Table 8, a mean of 2.00 said that their parents have a significant influence on

their career decision. While a mean of 2.14 answered that they are influenced by their parents to

pursue BS Marine Transportation. Moreover, a mean of 2.06 have answered that their parents

often question their reasons for choosing a career. A mean of 2.08 is influenced by the fact that if

their parents are seafarers, they will also feel pressured to pursue a similar field. Lastly, a mean

of 1.98 answered that having other immediate family members who are also seamen may

influence their decision to be a seaman as well.

The total weighted mean average is 2.05, with the majority of the respondents answered

that they are influenced by their Parents. This is also in line with Singh's (2005) remark that

29
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

career mentoring begins and ends at home. Parents are present with their children prior to formal

schooling and may stay with them after school. Parents love and know their children better than

anyone else, so they can go out of their way to guide and assist them. Given their experience

with their child, it is reasonable to believe that they are the best people to comprehend and care

for him or her. In conclusion, parental career advice is well-intentioned (Lindhard, 2017).

As per Singh (2005), providing career information from home is critical since parents

typically stay with their children after school to provide ongoing support. Despite conventional

perception that professional selections are made by individuals, Hoto (2018) claims that the

family (parents) is the most influential force in career decisions. Influence from parents is

proactive. It could be both deliberate and unintended. According to Young (1997), referenced in

Davidson (2009), parental influence is most beneficial when it is intentional, planned, and

goal-directed.

Based on Table 9, a mean of 1.98 have been influenced by their fellow friends/peers'

advice on careers and it is essential to them. While a mean of 1.95 is influenced by

encouragement about career from others of their age. Moreover, a mean of 1.94 is said that

career information is more influential if it comes from their peers. Additionally, a mean of 1.94

are influenced and have stated that they are likely to choose similar careers with their

friends/peer groups. Lastly, a mean of 1.89 answered that they are more likely to accept career

advice from their friends whom they value most.

The average weighted mean is 1.94 with most of the respondents having been influenced

by their friends and peers. Peer pressure is defined by the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary

31
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

English (2009) as a strong sensation that one must do the same things as other people of their age

if they want them to like them. Peer pressure has a significant impact on adolescents' job

decisions and indecision. According to Salami (2006), many Nigerian teenagers make poor

career choices due to a lack of vocational advice and career counseling, as well as ignorance,

inexperience, peer pressure, or the reputation associated with specific vocations.

Naz et al. (2014) found that peers and friends had a major impact on individuals'

behavior, personality development, and career decision-making processes, as well as good and

negative behavior in the future. Peers, especially team members, serve as key social referents,

instructing other members about customs, social norms, and various ideologies (Sherif, 2003).

Table 10
Summary on the Factors that Influence the Respondents in
Taking BS Marine Transportation Course

Statement Weighted Mean Description

Personal Interest 1.77 Highly Influenced

Parent’s Influence 2.05 Influenced

Peers’ Influence 1.94 Influenced

As shown in the Summary on the Factors that Influence the Respondents in Taking BS

Marine Transportation Course. A mean of 1.77 have been highly influenced with regards to their

Personal Interest. Interest in a field, according to Hidi (1990), is a mental resource that increases

learning, which leads to improved performance and achievement. In individualistic contexts,

personal interest was identified as a primary factor influencing employment choice. Interest was

linked to an individual's response, persistence, and learning, according to a study (Interest,

Learning, and the Psychological Processes That Mediate Their Relationship, 2002). It argued that

interest consists of both effective and cognitive components that are part of people's participation

in activities.

Moreover, a mean of 2.05 has been influenced by their Parents. Family role models have

a major impact on what students pursue (Wildman & Torres, 2002). Herren et al. (2011) revealed

that parents and guardians have a significant influence on students' college degree choices, which

is similar to the findings of this study. Several theories, including Social Cognitive Career

Theory (Lent, 1997), Bandura's Social Cognitive Learning theory, and Bronfenbrenner's

ecological theory, support parental involvement in their children's career decisions. All of these

33
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

theories lay a great emphasis on the impact of the social context on learning and development,

including career development. The family, of which parents are essential influential forces, plays

a significant role in social circumstances.

Furthermore, a mean of 1.94 respondents has also been influenced by their Peers. In

relation to this, Hashim and Embong (2015) conclude that a student's peer group is the crucial

source of impact on career decisions. Adolescents are easily influenced by their peers because

they rely on their peers to validate their actions, including their career choices. Peers can be

significant sources of motivation for one another, according to Salvy, Haye, Bowker, and

Hermans (2007).

It is found that their is a significant difference between the factors that influenced the

respondents in taking the BSMT course and the profile of the respondents in terms of Sex, Age,

Parent’s Educational Attainment, Parent’s Income, and the First Preferred Course. This means

that BSMT course is preferably for Male students therefore it is a great factor for teem to take

BSMT course. Also, age has a great factor w/ F-value of 379.35.

Parents' occupations have influenced the students in deciding the course they will take in

college since they rely on the job of their parents so that if they finish the course there is a great

chance to have a great job. Similarly, parents' income is essential and has influenced students to

take the course. Their parents' income is extremely crucial to their desire to pursue a bachelor's

degree.

Furthermore, the student's First Preferred Course is significant, with the majority of

respondents responding that their First Preferred Choice is actually BS Marine Transportation,

implying that they are very interested in pursuing the aforementioned course in college.

Conclusion

It was identified that career development is a lifelong process that is influenced by many

factors such as personal interests, parental and family influences, and the influence of friends and

peers. According to the results of the survey, the majority of the First Year BS Marine

Transportation Students are Highly Influenced by their personal interests in taking the BS Marine

Transportation Course at Isabela College of Arts & Technology. This indicates that their personal

interests, such as a desire to work in the marine industry, aspirations to be a seafarer in order to

make a decent salary, and a desire to travel the world to see new places, are taken into account.

It was also observed that parental perspectives play an important effect in their children's

education in terms of academic performance, profession choice, and ultimately influence their

children's conduct in terms of career preference. It was shown that parents had a significant

influence on their children's occupational choices, both purposefully and unintentionally. Their

influence can either encourage students to explore a wide range of possible careers or encourage

them to stay to a route they believe their parents will approve of. Individual and social

environments may also impact career choices, as people engage with their friends more

frequently during their adolescent years. Students are also reliant on their peers just like with

their parents as they mature and reach puberty, especially as they make decisions and create their

life objectives.

Lastly, it was discovered in this study that there is a significant difference between the

factors that influenced the First Year BS Marine Transportation Students in taking the BS Marine

Transportation course in Isabela College of Arts and Technology and the respondents' profile in

39
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

terms of Sex, Age, Parent’s Educational Attainment, Parent’s Income, and First Preferred

Course.

Recommendations

In the light of the findings and conclusions, the Researchers propose the following

recommendations:

Parents. That they may be invited to attend orientations to gain a better understanding of the

demand for Maritime professions. Moreover, it is recommended for the parents to understand

and recognize their children’s sentiments when it comes to choosing their own career path. They

should learn to know the perspective of their children, especially since students regard their

Parents as the most influential people in their lives.

Students. They should comprehend the complications and overcome the challenges in order to

apply the concepts acquired in the university to real-world situations. So that they could integrate

the underlying message of principles and gain a deeper understanding of the marine program's

objectives. Understanding their roles and tasks will keep them informed about what to anticipate

from the program and how to meet the program's educational goals.

Teachers. All marine freshmen may be gathered in a general assembly by the staff and teachers

to discuss everything about the nature of the program of study and as a career in order to

motivate them to attain their goals. Teachers must offer them with a basic grasp of the course's

twists and turns, as well as its connection to the Maritime curriculum, so that students are

motivated to learn and eager to complete the program.

40
ISABELA COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Tagaran, Cauayan City, Isabela

School. The institution's co curricular activities could be focused on developing programs that

examine the benefits and complexity of the marine curriculum in regards to student performance

and the university's basic principles. The course offering may also explore generating certain

learning activities that would modify and reshape the students' character to become imaginative

and creative in delivering solutions to the marine profession's challenging demands.

Future Researchers. The scope of this research is limited to the selected First Year BS Marine

Transportation Students in Isabela College of Arts & Technology. It is recommended to conduct

a wide scope of study to further identify other factors. Researchers can also include other

considerations that can motivate students to enroll in a course or institution, which includes

security, the size of the institution, and the courses provided. Other variables, such as the

university's marketing tools and techniques, may be incorporated in future studies to assess its

efficacy and efficiency in achieving the university's enrollment goals. In addition, the framework

of this study can be used for other learning institution
