ABSTRACT

The study aimed to determine the influence of TikTok on the Junior High School students’
academic performance in St. Mary’s Academy, Agoo, La Union.

The researchers used a correlational research design to find the relationship between the
two variables. Random sampling was chosen to randomly select the respondents. Furthermore,
the researchers managed to use the AWM method or the Average Weighted Mean.

The following are the findings of this study;

A 3.67 mean or 70.7 percent (%) was weighted from the question “How often do you open
TikTok when at home?” interpreting that most students open the TikTok app frequently when at
home. The statement “TikTok can be used as an educational platform” with the highest weighted
mean of 2.84 is descripted as moderately influential suggesting that most of the students consider
the app as an educational platform. The correlation analysis between the usage of TikTok and its
influence to learning showed a result of -0.7787 and it is interpreted that there is a moderate
correlation between the usage of TikTok and its influence to the academic performance of Junior
High School students. When P (0.121296) to α (0.05), the p-value was less than the significance
level which explains that there is a moderate correlation between the usage of TikTok and its
influence to the academic performance of Junior High School students of St. Mary’s Academy,
Agoo, La union.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In March 2020, President Rodrigo R. Duterte issued Proclamation No. 929 declaring the
Philippines under state of calamity and putting Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). The
Enhanced Community Quarantine lasted from March 2020 to April 2020. During these days, the
community was not able to socialize outside their homes for their safety. Without outside activities,
many engaged in entertaining themselves through the use of their phones. Having this in mind,
many individuals, including students, were introduced to the TikTok app.

TikTok is a social platform created on 2016 by a Chinese company ByteDance. It is a

platform available for teenagers above the age of 13. It allows its users to create and watch videos
related to different interests. (D’Souza, 2023) According to Johnson (2020), the app was
downloaded 2 million times during the 16th of March 2020, and also saw a 27% increase during
the first 23 days of March 2020. TikTok users grew to 87% during the start of the pandemic in
2020 making the social platform grow rapidly (Latour, 2021).

Ever since, Generation Z has become the main users of the app. According to Doyle (2022),
as of November 2022, 60% of TikTok users are from the Generation Z. This has made the
Generation Z to become the largest users of the platform which continues its rapid growth.
Although many students use the app solely for entertainment, TikTok still contains videos with
educational values especially for children as educational videos are best kept short which connects
to TikTok’s duration of videos which are usually 15 seconds to 10 minutes long. (Fear-Smith,
2021).

TikTok can be an influential social platform that can cause addiction to kids and teenagers.
(Wojdan et al., 2021) According to Digital Health (2023), Due to the shortness of length of the
content posted in the app, the users can easily get attached to the app because the users finds the
length more fun and on-trend. Furthermore, they cited that TikTok may cause negative emotions,
life takeover, schedule distraction, self-isolation, and physical problems such as lack of sleep.

1
In accordance with the increase of the app, the students in the Philippines nationwide had
an increase of 58% in the use of devices for modular learning as of 2021 according to the statistics
of the survey that the Social Weather Stations has conducted way back November 21 – November
25, 2021. This was in accordance with the memorandum and DepEd order no. 18, s. 2020 that the
Department of Education implemented with the implementation of the Basic Education Learning
Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) during the surge of CoVid-19. This has contributed to the increase of
the usage of mobile devices.

Statement of the Problem

Tiktok’s alarming user growth rate has sparked many problems that create real-world
problems, outside the app. It is a platform used by teenagers ranging from 13-17 year olds but
also by kids ranged 8-10 years old. It has faced criticism for hosting a range of inappropriate
content like misinformation, pornography, conspiracy theories, and graphic contents has not only
baited Generation Z users but has also caused to make them unexplainably addicted to the app.

The focus of the study is to observe how the app is undeniably addicting which may aid
the developers in formulating solutions needed to stop the alarming problem of the app which is
addiction. Students who are still developing their critical thinking skills are considered to be users
of the app. Such content makes the students unable to realize what they are watching at develops
their brain to think that it is good because of peer pressure and because it is usually used without
any problems unless scrutinized. The study aims to determine how TikTok affects the academic
performances of Junior High School students which raises awareness to different individuals
including the students themselves. Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. Does TikTok drastically affect the academic performance of students especially their
time for studying?

2. Do students consider TikTok as a learning platform instead of reference books,

notebooks and liable websites?

3. Does TikTok greatly benefit to the studies of Junior High School students?

Significance of the Study

This study must be conducted to determine the influence of TikTok to Junior High School
students especially because face-to-face classes are ongoing. This research will provide data and
information that will not only benefit the learners themselves, but will help learning organizations
in easing to process of figuring out the problem of the academic performance of students which
may have been caused by their addiction to the app.
The study will benefit the developers of TikTok for them to be able to see the problem with
allowing users to watch graphic content and unfiltered videos that spikes the levels of interest of
students. This study will help the developers to strengthen safe search and instead allow videos
with greater educational value to flow in the for you page of the app.
This study will also benefit the Administrators of St. Mary’s Academy for them to be able
to promulgate new rules in keeping the students focus on their studies.
This study will benefit the Teachers of St. Mary’s Academy for them to be able to adjust
their teaching strategies and skills to further catch the attention of students in learning so that they

3
may be able to surpass the influence of the app and convince the students to use reference books
rather than electronic references.

This study will benefit the current learners of St. Mary’s Academy for them to understand
how TikTok consumes their time allotted for studying inside the school. The information provided
by the researchers will help the students to understand what are the advantages and disadvantages
of TikTok.

This study will benefit the parents of the selected subject. The study will provide
information that may help the parents to adjust their abilities in helping their children, the students
to use their time adequately.

This study will also benefit the Department of Education by providing information and
statistics that will help the department to raise any necessary regulations to aid not only the teachers
but also the students to avoid the app addiction.

The researchers confidently hope that the study will assist future researchers in
understanding the drastic influence of TikTok to students for its improvement.

Scope and Delimitation

The main purpose of our study is to gauge how often TikTok is used and to understand its
impact to the academic performance of Junior High School students of St. Mary’s Academy. The
students’ personal information like name, age, grade level and section will be gathered for the
profiling of the study.

This study was limited by the researchers to 140 male and female Junior High School
students. 10 students are randomly picked from each section for each grade level to avoid conflict
in choosing students. The survey questionnaire will personally be given room to room by the
researchers.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study uses a correlational research design, wherein the researchers collects data from
respondents through testing and analyzing the relationship between the usage of TikTok and its
influence to the academic learning of Junior High School Students. The study uses survey
questionnaires to get data from the subject’s perspective. The survey questionnaire will contain
two specific areas; the subjects’ usage of TikTok and questions about their learning performances.
The question will also include suggestions from the subjects to analyze the ideas of improving
their learning performances and their usage of TikTok.
A quantitative research questionnaire was used in gathering the data and information about
the usage of TikTok and its impact on the academic performance of junior high school students.

The researchers used stratified random sampling under probability sampling methods.
Subgroups were drawn from the population which are then referred to as a strata. Since it was a
random selection, there was no pattern or sequence as to who the next respondent would be.
Instead, the respondent was selected as to whoever was going to be drawn from the list.

The participants in this study were a minimum of 10 junior high school students from St.
Mary’s Academy, Agoo, La Union, Inc. with a total of 140 respondents who were chosen because
they attended the same school as the researchers and to achieve saturation.

As a primary source of data, the respondents were given an ample amount of time to answer
the survey questionnaires during the first quarter of 2023. This was to assure that the researchers
were able to fully reach the respondents and aid them if there were any misunderstandings. The
distribution of the survey questionnaires were in person for the students of St. Mary’s Academy,
Agoo, La Union, Inc. were under the implementation of the full face-to-face classes.

Instrumentation and Data Collection

The researchers distributed survey questionnaires. The instrument that was used were
helpful in gathering the desired answers and data from the respondents. The questionnaires were
prepared by the researchers before the survey distribution.
Before the data collection, the researchers were initially told to seek permission to their
research adviser and the principal of St. Mary’s Academy for their approval with the use of a letter.
The letter used were given to the subject teachers of each classroom during the survey period which
lasted two days. The researchers explained the purpose of the research and complied with the Data
Privacy Act or known as Republic Act No. 10173 to inform the respondents that all the results
would be used for research purposes only. The researchers then retrieved the questionnaire the
same day they were distributed and started quickly to tabulate to analyze the data.

“TikTok can be used as an educational platform” had the highest AWM of 2.84 which is showed
that the students often times use the app as an educational platform. According to Edwards (2022),
TikTok can be used in educational situation such as; making videos that could be part of a
presenation, and students can learn from these videos as lessons. The next statement with the
highest weighted mean was the statement “Watching TikTok distracts me from studying” which
had an AWM of 2.69. This showed that TikTok videos can be highly influential to the students
that it alters their interest to learn.
A similar study by Lictawa et al. (2022) concluded that TikTok can still tamper the
students’ interest in learning and their academic performance even with only a little amount of
screen time. It may cause distraction as it leads to addiction and it wastes time.

Overall, the results showed that the effect of TikTok to learning was moderately influential
with an Average Weighted Mean (AWM) of 2.33

1. A 3.67 mean was weighted from the question “How often do you open TikTok when at
home?” interpreting that most students open the TikTok app frequently when at home.
2. The statement “TikTok can be used as an educational platform” with the highest weighted
mean of 2.84 is descripted as moderately influential suggesting that most of the students
consider the app as an educational platform.
3. The correlation analysis between the usage of TikTok and its influence to learning showed
a result of -0.7787 and it is interpreted that there is a moderate correlation between the
usage of TikTok and its influence to the academic performance of Junior High School
students. When P (0.121296) to α (0.05), the p-value was less than the significance level
which explains that there is a moderate correlation between the usage of TikTok and its
4. influence to the academic performance of Junior High School students of St. Mary’s
Academy, Agoo, La union.

11
Conclusion

Related with the analyses of the gathered data the following conclusions were drawn:

1. TikTok affects the studying time of the respondents and their academic performance
because the students were moderately distracted to study when using the app.
2. The respondents sometimes consider TikTok as an educational platform because it was a
helpful app for their homework and skills.

3. There was a correlation between the usage of TikTok and the academic performance of
students interpreting that the app moderately benefits to the studies of the Junior High
School students for its versatility as a learning and an entertainment platform.

Recommendations

1. The students should reduce their screen time to avoid addiction which may cause
distractions.
2. Future researchers can use this study as references for their future research studies
3. The Junior High School students should interact more with other students in the campus to
lessen screen time.
4. Teachers should collect the mobile devices of students unless necessary to help them focus
in their classes.
5. The school should implement more sport activities to have students have physical
interaction.

entitled “Usage of TikTok and its influence to the Academic Performance of
Junior High School students in the school year 2022-2023”.

In connection to this, we humbly ask little of your time to answer the survey
questionnaires that will later be distributed by the researchers after explaining our
guidelines.

Rest assured that the information gathered will be used solely for educational
purposes.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Truly yours,

Abang, Renangel Celine P.
