CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
Rationale

Orlikowski and Barley (2001) claim that the way we learn and study has been

transformed by technology, affecting many aspects of our lives. Apps for study planners

are no exception to the ongoing technological evolution. Researchers can stay up-to-

date with the latest study planner app developments by conducting studies and

identifying useful features for academic success. Although study planner apps are

commonly used, their efficiency has not been well investigated. The researchers can

close this knowledge gap and offer insightful information on how these apps affect

academic achievement by performing a study.

According to Yuan, et al. (2017), students struggle with time management and

don't fully appreciate its importance. As a result, they often miss assignment deadlines

without realizing it. However, with the advent of study planner apps, students have a

new resource to help them better manage their academic workload. Using a reliable

daily or monthly planner can help students optimize productivity by structuring their day,

prioritizing tasks, and managing time more efficiently.

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of study planner apps in improving

academic performance and reducing stress levels among students. Researchers will

analyze app features, popularity, and impact on learning to provide insights into their

usefulness for academic organizations. The study will also help students establish good

study habits and identify useful app features for academic success and stress reduction

(Nyame, J.).

1
Statement of the Problem

To solve the lack of effective time management and organization among

students, these are the following problems that this study aims to develop:

1. How do adaptation and usage of a study planner app influence students in terms of:

1.1. Laziness;

1.2. Use of Technology; and

1.3. Stress levels

2. How effective is the study planner app in terms of:

2.1 Time management;

2.2 Setting goals; and

2.3 Improving academic performance

3. How significantly different is the performance of students using traditional study

methods from students using the study planner app?

2
Scope and Delimitation

The study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of a study planner app as a

tool to help students stay organized and on-track with their studies, with the goal of

improving their academic performance. Its main purpose is to provide insights into the

potential benefits and drawbacks of using a study planner app and identify the key

features that are most effective in helping students stay on track with their studies. The

app should allow users to input their class schedules, homework assignments, project

due dates, and exams, and create a personalized schedule that will help them stay on

track with their studies. The app may also include features such as task reminders,

progress tracking, note-taking, and collaboration with peers. The study planner app will

be limited to its primary function of helping students manage their academic workload. It

will not provide additional features such as social networking or entertainment. The app

will not be responsible for the content or quality of the academic materials being studied

by the user. The app will also not guarantee academic success or improved grades, as

this is ultimately dependent on the effort and abilities of the user.

3
Importance of the Study

The results of this study are useful for following demographics.

Students. The primary beneficiaries of a study planner app research are students of all

ages, levels, and disciplines. The app could help them manage their study schedules,

set goals, track progress, and stay motivated to achieve academic success.

Teachers. A study planner app can help teachers to manage their teaching schedule

better by providing a clear overview of their daily, weekly, or monthly activities. With a

planner app, teachers can easily schedule their classes, meetings, and other activities

in a structured way, making it easier to track their daily routines.

Institutions. Educational institutions such as schools, colleges, and universities could

benefit from the research on study planner apps by integrating the app into their

curriculum and offering it as a resource to their students.

App Developers. The research on study planner apps could provide valuable insights

to app developers on user preferences, needs, and behaviors. This could help them

create more effective and user-friendly study planner apps.

Future Researchers. Future researchers can use the study planner app to help them

stay organized, productive, flexible, collaborative, and data-driven. By using a study

planner app, they can optimize their study time, improve their performance, and achieve

their academic and professional goals.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The Study Planner app is relevant in today's society as it aims to address the

issue of time management and organization among students, which can often be a

significant challenge. With the rise of technology and digital tools, there is a growing

interest in exploring how these tools can be leveraged to support student learning and

academic success. By providing students with a platform to plan and manage their

study schedules more effectively, the Study Planner app has the potential to improve

students' academic performance and overall well-being.

Because of the convenience and customization options provided by these apps,

students can create personalized plans that meet their individual needs and

preferences. Kim et al. (2019) created a study planner app for college students that

includes gamification elements. The app was effective in, improving students'

motivation, engagement, and academic performance. Similarly, Papadakis et al. (2021)

looked into the efficacy of a gamified study planner app in improving students' study

habits and academic performance. According to the findings, the Study Planner app

was effective in, encouraging positive study habits, improving academic performance.

These studies highlight the potential benefits of gamification elements in study

planner apps, such as enhancing motivation, engagement, and academic performance.

By incorporating gamification elements in the Study Planner app, students may be more

likely to engage with the app and create positive study habits that lead to improved

academic performance.

6
In a study, DeCastro-Ambrosetti et al. (2021) investigated the effects of a mobile

study planner app on self-regulated learning behaviors and academic achievement

among undergraduate students. The app improved students' self-regulated learning

behaviors and academic achievement. Similarly, Wang et al. (2018) investigated the

impact of a mobile study planner app on Chinese university students' self-efficacy, study

habits, and academic performance. The app was found to be effective in improving

students' self-efficacy, study habits and academic performance.

These studies demonstrate the potential benefits of using a mobile study planner

app in improving students' self-regulated learning behaviors, self-efficacy, study habits,

and academic performance. By incorporating features that enable goal setting, progress

tracking, and feedback, students can develop positive study habits and behaviors that

lead to better academic outcomes.

Brandt et al. (2020) conducted a usability study on the design of study planner

apps for university students, with a focus on identifying the most effective features and

design elements. The study involved interviews with students and an analysis of

existing study planner apps. The authors provided recommendations for improving the

design and functionality of study planner apps, such as incorporating features that

enable customization and integration with other tools, providing notifications and

reminders, and including gamification elements to enhance motivation.

In a similar vein, Yen and Lin (2017) conducted a study on the use of a mobile

study planner app among university students, with a focus on its impact on learner

engagement and academic achievement. The authors found that the app was effective

in 7
promoting positive study behaviors, such as setting goals and monitoring progress, and

in improving academic performance. The app also provided students with a sense of

control over their studies and helped to reduce stress and anxiety related to academic

workload.

These studies are relevant to the development and implementation of the Study

Planner app, as they provide insights into effective design elements and the potential

impact of such apps on student behavior and academic performance. By incorporating

features that have been shown to be effective, such as customization, notifications, and

gamification, the Study Planner app can improve its usability and utility for students.

Additionally, the study by Yen and Lin (2017) suggests that the app has the potential to

positively impact students' academic achievement and well-being.

Several studies have investigated the effectiveness of study planner apps in

various contexts and with different features. For instance, Ranieri et al. (2020)

conducted a study to assess the efficacy of a study planner app that provided

personalized recommendations in improving students' academic performance and self-

regulated learning behaviors. The authors found that the app was effective in enhancing

students' academic performance and self-regulated learning behaviors, suggesting that

personalized recommendations can be an effective feature in study planner apps.

8
In addition, some studies have focused on developing and implementing study

planner apps in specific educational settings. Calvo et al. (2018) developed a study

planner app specifically for high school students and evaluated its effectiveness in

improving academic performance. The study found that the app was effective in

enhancing students' academic performance, highlighting the potential benefits of study

planner apps in secondary education.

These studies are relevant to the development and implementation of the Study

Planner app, as they provide insights into the potential benefits of personalized

recommendations and customization options. The studies also suggest that study

planner apps can be effective in improving academic performance in different

educational settings, including high school and university contexts.

The respondents of the study will be ICT students, as they have the technical expertise

and software knowledge to provide valuable feedback regarding the study planner app.

By selecting ICT students as the target group, the study aims to gather meaningful data

to inform the app's development and effectiveness. A purposive sampling technique and

non-probability technique are employed to obtain the sample from the population.

Research Instrument

Survey questionnaires were used as the main data-gathering instrument. They can

provide data about students' organizational skills, study habits, and their satisfaction

with the study planner app. This will help the researchers gain a comprehensive

understanding of students' experiences using the study planner app and its impact on

their academic performance. Additionally, the survey questionnaires will be

10
administered to a sample of ICT students, ensuring that the collected data accurately

represents the target population.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will establish clear research questions that the data gathering process

will address. This will help guide the choice of data gathering procedures and ensure

that the data collected is relevant to the research questions. This will also help the

researchers determine the appropriate sample size and ensure that the study is feasible

and manageable within the available resources and time frame.

Data Analysis

1. Thematic analysis is a data analysis that involves identifying and categorizing

themes within collected data, such as from interviews, focus groups, or

observations. It can reveal key themes related to topics like study planner apps,

student organization, and success.

2. Descriptive analysis is a data analysis method used to summarize and describe

the characteristics of a dataset. It helps in understanding the underlying structure

of the data and provides insights into the patterns and trends that may exist

within the data.

The researcher will conduct a thematic analysis approach to the data to

identify common themes and patterns in the data collected and a descriptive

analysis to provide a
comprehensive overview of the study sample and their responses, which can

complement each other and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the

experiences and perceptions of students who use study planner apps.

and mission of the app. It is a powerful visual representation of the app's purpose and

vision, and serves as a beacon of inspiration and motivation for students who are

striving to achieve academic success. At the heart of the logo is the symbol of a book,

which has been a traditional symbol of education and learning for centuries. The book

represents the accumulation of knowledge and the pursuit of learning, which are

essential for academic success. The bulb inside the book is a symbol of innovation,
creativity, and inspiration. It represents the idea that students can combine their existing

knowledge with innovative thinking and new ideas to achieve academic excellence. By

using the study planner app, students can access a range of tools and resources that

can help them unleash their creative potential and achieve their goals. Finally, the

school’s name inside the bulb is a subtle yet powerful reminder that the study planner

app is designed specifically for students. It is tailored to meet the unique needs and

challenges of students, and provides a comprehensive suite of features and tools that

can help them manage their studies, stay organized, and achieve their academic goals.
