Teaching Tips: 5 Rainbow Ducks
Using this file
You are able to print and photocopy these pages for your
non-commercial classroom and home use.

Action rhymes and finger plays make for wonderful language and literacy activities in the early years classroom. Your
students will love learning the words and actions to join in with their class and teacher.

Finger plays will help them:

- focus as a class group in the learning space
- get their bodies / hands moving
- learn to look at you and listen
- say a rhyming text
- follow directions
- be playful and imaginative
- move from active to focused attention

Read the rhyme to your students first, pointing to the words. Say it again, doing the actions as they watch. On the third
reading, ask your students to join with you.

After the rhyme:

- have a talk about the numbers
- look at the number words and numerals
- ask students what happens as each duck flies off
- use math equipment to model early subtraction as you read the rhyme
- let students have a blackline copy of the rhyme to take home and ‘read’ to their families

Once the rhyme is familiar to your students you can encourage them to say it with you again in the future, as a lesson transi-
tion or management tool.

Actions
- the actions to this rhyme reflect similar counting to 5 rhymes
- students hold up fingers to show each count
- on ‘over the clouds and far away’ students take their hand over their shoulder
- when students bring the ducks back, they take a finger down, reflecting the new count
- students can use the other hand to make the big bossy duck quack

Five rainbow ducks went up one day,
Over the clouds and far away.
The big bossy duck said, “quack, quack, quack”,
But only four rainbow ducks came back.
(continue for 4, 3 and 2 ducks)

One rainbow duck went up one day,

Over the clouds and far away.
The big bossy duck said,
“quack, quack, quack
quack, quack, quack, quack,
quack, quack”...
...and all of the rainbow
ducks came back!
