Rotational Equilibrium

If the net torque on a rotatable object is

zero then it will be in rotational equilibrium
and not able to acquire angular
acceleration.

Example
Consider the wheel
shown in the figure,
acted on by two forces.
What magnitude of the
force F2 will be required
for the wheel to be in
rotational equilibrium?
Example
𝜏1 + 𝜏2 = 0
𝜏1 + (−𝜏2 ) = 0
𝜏1 = 𝜏2
𝐹1 𝑟1 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃1 = 𝐹2 𝑟2 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃2

5𝑁 0.075 𝑚 sin 135° = 𝐹2 0.1𝑚 𝑠𝑖𝑛90°

0.265 𝑁. 𝑚
𝐹2 = = 𝟐. 𝟔𝟓 𝑵
0.1 𝑚
Angular
Quantities
Angular Position
To indicate the angular
position of a rotating
object, or how far it has
rotated, we specify the
angle 𝜃 of some particular
line in the object with
respect to a reference line.
Angular Displacement
Angular displacement is
the change in angular
position of the body. It is
obtained by taking the
difference between the
final angle and the initial
angle.

𝛥𝜃 = 𝜃𝑓 − 𝜃𝑖
Radian
In rotational motion, angular position and
angular displacement are described in
radians, which is obtained from the arc
length that the angular displacement
covers.

1 rev = 360° = 2𝜋 rad

Example
A bike wheel rotates 4.50 revolutions. How many
radians has it rotated?
Example
Convert the following angles from radians to
degrees or degrees to radians.

a) 220°

b) 1.58 rad

c) 135°

d) 1.22 rad
Angular Velocity
The time rate of change in
angular position is called the
angular velocity and is obtained
in a similar manner as (linear)
velocity.
Δ𝜃
𝜔=
Δ𝑡
The standard unit for angular velocity is
rad/s, however revolutions per minute (rpm)
is more commonly used.
Example
What is the angular velocity of a spinning
top if it travels 𝜋 radians in a third of a
second?

a. 1/3
b. 𝜋/3
c. 9𝜋
d. 3𝜋
Example
A 20 in diameter tire on a car makes 9.3
revolutions per second. Find the angular
speed of the car.

a. 22 𝜋 rad/s
b. 18.6 𝜋 rad/s
c. 300.2 𝜋 rad/s
d. 186 𝜋 rad/s
