Background
Tobacco use causes six million unnecessary deaths worldwide each year, with many of these
is one of 15 countries in the world with a high burden of tobacco-related disease. Tobacco-
related diseases kill 87,600 Filipinos per year (DOH, 2022). Tobacco use is a risk factor for a
variety of diseases and disabilities, including lung cancer, stroke, heart disease, and chronic
respiratory illness, in addition to mortality. Second- and third-hand smoke are exactly as
To combat the expanding tobacco epidemic, the Philippines enacted tobacco control policies in
1987. Cigarette control legislation was enacted to: 1) raise cigarette taxation, 2) restrict tobacco
advertising or promotion, 3) establish smoke-free zones, and 4) prohibit the sale of tobacco
products to minors. Despite these measures, 47.5% of 13- to 15-year-old Filipino students were
not ceased to buy cigarettes and even used them in public places like bathrooms
(PopulationMedicine, 2015). In addition to being a health risk for nonsmokers using a restroom,
most students who don't smoke complain about the bad odor smokers make. Though many
schools use some type of smoke sensor, and they are highly effective at detecting tobacco smoke.
Smokeless vapors, on the other hand, are a different matter. Traditional smoke detectors cannot
identify vaping device emissions, providing significant issues for school workers. Since we are
in a relatively new generation, we are more inclined to the idea of vape because it is less harmful

than cigarettes. Because we are in a relatively new generation, existing smoke detecting devices
are increasingly becoming outdated, therefore we must develop a new gadget that can keep up
The overall goal of this research is to design and install smoke sensors that detect both smoke
and vape emissions and inform authorities when a student or group of students is smoking in
school restrooms. This device also makes accessible technology available to the general public,
allowing schools to use it to reduce the number of students who smoke in school restrooms.
