CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research techniques employed

in the conduct of the study. It discusses the research and

sampling designs, the instruments and methods of data

collection and the statistical tools that were used to

interpret the data.

Research Design

The descriptive-evaluative method was used to determine

the waste management practices of Secondary Public High

Schools in Naga City. The descriptive method was used to

identify the solid waste practices along waste generation,

segregation, storage, and recovery of biodegradable and non-

biodegradable. The evaluative method was used to assess the

level of implementation of the solid waste management as

not, poorly, moderately and highly implemented. The same

method was used to evaluate the level of awareness of the

respondents on policies on solid waste management. This

study was conducted on August – October, 2015.

profile.

Population

The respondents of the study were the (13869) students,

(407) teachers and (8) principals of eight (8) Secondary

schools in the Division of Naga City. Students were randomly

selected composed of; 141 males, 248 females, 111 Grade 7,

102 Grade 8, 95 Grade 9 and 81 Grade 10. The teachers

consisted of science teachers where; 8 are males, 45 are

females, 15 are aged 23-31, 22 aged 32-40, 10 aged 41-49 and

6 aged 50-58 . All principals of the secondary schools in

the division were included as respondents of the study

where; 4 are males, 4 females, 3 aged 30-41, 2 aged 42-53

and 3 aged 54-65.

The Slovin formula was used in the determination of

sample size for students involved in Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10.

The total number of respondents was 450 broken down into 389

students, 53 teachers and 8 administrators.

Research Instrument

A self-administered Interview guide was used to gather

the necessary data. This was given to the respondents to

rate their level implementation on solid waste management

practices and their level of awareness on policies.

Part A has 14 items on solid waste management practices

which include waste generation, segregation, storage, and

recovery of biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Part B has

10 items consisting of policies and programs on solid waste

management.

The Researcher used digital camera for the

documentation of the study.

Statistical Treatment

The following statistical tools were used:

1. Mean and ranking were used to determine the solid waste

practices along waste generation, segregation, storage,

and recovery of biodegradable and non-biodegradable and

the level of awareness on policies.

2. Two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to

determine the differences on solid waste management

45

practices among the respondents and among the schools

of the Secondary Public High Schools.

3. Chi-Squares was used to determine the association of

respondent’s personal factors to the solid waste

management practices of the Secondary Public High

Schools.
