CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research design, research locale population

and study respondents, research instrument validation, data collection technique,

data scoring and qualifying, and statistics instrument.

Research Design

In this study, the researcher used the Descriptive research method to

perform exploratory research. It enables researchers to precisely and

methodically describe a population, circumstance, or phenomenon in detail

(Dovetail, 2023). Moreover, a quantitative research design to collect and analyze

the data on language barriers to English proficiency: a study of the challenges

the HUMSS non-native speakers face in learning English.

Research Locale

The research conducted at Agusan National High School Senior High

School, Butuan City. Agusan National High School is a secondary school that is

part of the Cagayan de Oro City Division of the Department of Education. With a

total land area of roughly 9,826 sq.m., the school site is located in the heart of

the barangay near the Agusan Barangay Hall, the Roman Catholic Church, and

the Philippine Independent Church. It's around 30 meters from the National
23

Highway and easily accessible by all modes of land transportation (Campus

Hunters, 2019).

Today, ANHS offers several high school curricula, including the Science

Technology Oriented High School (STOHS), the Revised Basic Education

curriculum, the Balik Paaralan para sa Out-of-School Adults (BP-OSA) program,

the Special Program in the Arts (SPA), the Special Program in Sports (SPS),

Modular, and the Alternative Learning System (ALS). They have also built their

Senior High School program, which includes the following strands: Accountancy

Business Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Figure 2 shows the location of the study.

Population and Participants of the Study

The study's participants were the Agusan National Senior High School

students, specifically the Grade 11 HUMSS students.

Table 1. Shows that there are one thousand ninety (1090) total Grade 11

HUMMS students and one hundred of them were selected randomly as

participants.

Sampling Design

The researchers used purposive random sampling, which involves

selecting participants based on specific criteria relevant to the research question.

Purposive random sampling was involved in selecting participants based on their

class markers with a total population of 36-37 students with a total of 147

participants.

Research Instruments

The research Instrument used in this study is an adapted research survey

questionnaire. Moreover, the survey method gathered investigative data by

asking people questions about the research. Typically, researchers survey

people with particular knowledge, insights, or experiences related to the study

(Indeed Editorial Team, 2022).

The primary source data for this study was the questionnaire which were

answered by the participants enrolled in Agusan National Senior High School.

Data Gathering Procedure

Upon the approval of the research proposal, the researchers sent a formal

letter to the school principal and the council head of the 11th-grade curriculum at

Agusan National Senior High School, requesting permission to survey their

students. After the approval, the researchers asked for the vacant time and

distribute the survey questionnaire to -the graders of Agusan National Senior

High School to evaluate the quality of the learning environment and compare it to

the national average.

The students had enough time to complete the survey questionnaire, and

the instrument was returned with their responses at their convenience. The

researchers collected the data from the participants via a self-administered

survey. The researchers kept data confidential and use the data only for research

purposes.
27

Scoring and Quantification of Data

To know the language barriers and challenges faced by the grade 11

HUMSS, students were assessed from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 5 (Strongly

Agree). The average mean for each indicator was obtained and described using

the following description.

Scale Verbal Description Linkert Scale Interval Interpretation

5 Strongly Agree 4.50-5.00 Very High

4 Agree 3.50-4.49 High

3 Neutral 2.50-3.49 Moderate

2 Disagree 1.50-2.49 Low

1 Strongly Disagree 1.00-1.49 Very Low

Statistical Treatment

The following statistical tool was applied to the data collection Descriptive

Analysis. The statistics used to establish a quantitative analysis of the study.

Mean-It is the total number of values divided by the sum of all discounts.

Standard Deviation- the average distance of the observations from the

data set's

mean.
28

Frequency- the number of times the observation occurs in the data.

The percentage is any proportion or share concerning the whole,

expressed as a certain number of parts of something divided into 100

parts.
