CHAPTER III: METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research methodology that is being utilized in this research

study. This chapter includes the detailed discussion on the research design, sampling method,

sources of data, respondents of the study, the research instrument used, the data gathering

procedure and the statistical treatment of data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This research study uses descriptive research design for it focuses on the Level of

satisfaction of Senior High School Cookery Students to the Available Facilities in Sorsogon

National High School. This will also identify the different facilities available in the above-

mentioned school. Descriptive research design was employed to describe the contentment of the

students on whatever available facilities in the said school. The sample in this study was taken

from the population of Grade 11 and 12 students under Cookery strand. A total of 133 students

were determined from the total population of 200 students who are taking up Cookery strand.

These respondents were given a survey questionnaire that contains the list of different facilities

available in the school and the level of satisfaction of the students on the stated facilities. The

data gathered were treated statistically and analyzed using frequency count and percentage.

SAMPLING METHOD

The sample in this study was taken from the total population of senior high school students

enrolled under Cookery strand of Technical Vocational and Livelihood track in Sorsogon
National High School which has a total of 200 students. Stratified random sampling was used to

get the number of samples. By applying Slovin’s formula, the number of respondents were

computed, and the number of samples is 133. The percentage of students enrolled in each grade

level and section were identified and were used to determine how many respondents will

represent each section. The percentage of each section was derived from dividing the total

number of students per section by the total population of the four sections taking up the cookery

strand. To identify the number of respondents per section, the percentage of each section was

multiplied by 133, which is the computed number of samples.

Using the fishbowl method, the samples were drawn to ensure that each member of the

population had an equal chance of inclusion as sample.

SOURCES OF DATA

The researchers had two targets as the sources of data. First, the advisers, from whom they

solicited the list of students which is one of the vital data needed for this research. The

researchers used the data given by the advisers to choose the actual respondents using the

fishbowl method. All the names of the students in the list given by the advisers was written

individually in a small piece of paper. It was rolled and put in bowl. All names were drawn until

the target number of respondents had been achieved. Second, the respondents, who will be given

the questionnaire so that the researchers will be able to collect all the needed information. It was

from these respondents that the results of this research study was elicited.
RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

Table 1

Grade & Section Frequency Percentage

Grade 11 – Section 1 35 26%

Grade 11 – Section 2 36 27%

Grade 12 – Section 1 31 23.5%

Grade 12 – Section 2 31 23.5%

Total 133 100%

The Population and Samples of the Study

The respondents of this study were derived from the Grade 11 and Grade 12 students under

Cookery Strand of Technical Vocational and Livelihood Track in Sorsogon National high

School. It has a total population of 200. And after executing the Slovin’s Formula, the actual

number of respondents which is 133 is extracted from the total population of 200. And upon the

application of stratified sampling, the actual number of respondents who came from each section

was identified. To wit, 35 students came from Grade 11-Section 1; 36 students from Grade 11-

Section 2 ; 31 students from Grade 12- Section 1 and 31 students from Grade 12-Section 2.

THE INSTRUMENT

To gather the needed data, the researcher used an instrument and ensure its validity and

reliability through series of test runs. The instrument used in this study contains questions
intended to answer the objectives of the study. A survey questionnaire was used to identify the

level of satisfaction of the students to the available facilities in Sorsogon National High School.

The first part of the questionnaire is the profiling of the students in terms of their grade level and

section, gender, and age. The second part consists of checklist of available facilities in the school

with the columns for level of satisfaction written opposite to each facility.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers conducted a series of test runs to ensure the validity and reliability of the

use of survey questionnaire as the research instrument. After which, the researchers submitted a

letter of request to the school head and to the advisers to seek permission to conduct a survey on

the target respondents. They also asked permission from the advisers to furnish them with the

copy of list of students to be able for them to identify the respondents using the fishbowl method.

The research instruments were distributed to the respondents. After the respondents answered the

questionnaire, the retrieval immediately followed. Each accomplished questionnaire was then

analyzed, and the results were tabulated to easily interpret the data.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

This study applied frequency count and percentage. Frequency count was used to

determine the number of responses associated with the level of satisfaction being presented in the

survey questionnaire. The conversion from frequency to percentage was employed to easily

compare which among the levels of satisfaction did the respondents mostly answered.
The levels of satisfaction that were being used in the survey are as follows:

1 - Extremely Satisfied

2 - Satisfied

3 - Less Satisfied

4 – Not Satisfied
