Welcome to the Mathematics 4 Module on Reading and Writing Numbers Up


to Hundred Thousand!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

seedlings to different schools in Metro Manila.

▪ How do we read and write 64,621 in words and in


symbol?
▪ We read 64,621 as sixty-four thousand, six hundred
twenty-one

Reading a whole number


▪ In reading whole numbers, we begin from the first digit on
the left, specify the period name and go on until the last digit
on the right is reached. The units period is not read.
Here’s another example:
To read the number 121,045, we can observe that:
1 belongs to the hundred thousands group or period
2 belongs to the ten thousands group or period
1 belongs to the thousands group or period
0 belongs to the hundreds group or units
4 belongs to the tens group or units
5 belongs to the ones group or units

Hence, 121,045 is read as “one hundred twenty-one thousand,


forty-five”.

Writing whole numbers


How do we write 64, 821 in words?

64,821 sixty-four thousand, eight hundred twenty- one

▪ When writing large numbers, you need to understand


the place value and the period of the given numbers.

Example: Write 178,550 in words.
