(a) Governor in the fuel control system

(b)Sleeve and locknut adjustment in governor

Figure 1. Governor in the fuel control system for Kubota

Engine
2. Objectives

- To study the governor application of Kubota engine

-To know the operation of governor control system
- To calculate the governor speed

3. Requirements
- Kubota engine (Rated 5 kW, 2600 rpm)
- Meter cable
- Digital Tachometer (to measure rev/min)
- Screw driver

4. Experimental Procedure

Take off the fuel control cover and look carefully the governor and
sleeve. The locknut is used to adjust the sleeve lift during the operation.
The crank shaft gear links to the governor drive gear and that makes the
governor turning according the speed ratio.
At normal speed, the governor rotates normally and no fuel control is
making.
At high speed, the two fly balls move outward and push the sleeve.
Then the sleeve touches and pushes the linkage rod that makes the rack
moves to be close slightly the plunger for fuel flow-rate to reduce without
speed changing.

(i) Measure the sleeve lift, h

(ii) Count the number of teeth of the crank shaft drive gear and
driven governor gear and then calculate the speed ratio by the
following equation.
3

Number of teeth of the drive gear

SR=
Number of teeth of the driven gear

5. Measurements , Calculations and Answer the questions

Q(i) How the governor works to be fuel control?
Q(ii) If the sleeve lift changes to be high, what will the governor speed
require to do?

Ans:
Ncrank= 2600 rpm, Power, P= 5 kW

Speed ratio:
Number of teeth of the drive gear D a 7
SR= = = =2.33
Number of teeth of the driven gear D p 3

Speed of Pinion of the governor,

N pinion
SR=
N crank

N pinion
2.33=
2600

∴ N pinion =6058 rpm

(i) At the engine speed 2600 rpm, the speed of pinion of the Governor
reaches 6058 rpm and that makes pulling the rack of pump. This
causes reduction the fuel consumption.

(ii) If the sleeve-lift changes to be high, the governor will make the
engine speed to be slow by pulling the linkage joining to the rack of
the pump.
