EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Smartphones nowadays are vital in the daily life of a person. In the hustle and
bustle of modern life, there are so many important elements of daily life that will
need to sort out and organized on smartphones. A smartphone has so many
people can do with it. It also has many ways in which they play a key role in our life.
In 2021, the number of smartphone users worldwide today is 6.378 Billion, which
translates to 80.63% of the world's population owning a smartphone (Turner,
2009). Perhaps it is because the tremendous appeal of smartphones is their
functionality.

However, the limited battery power of smartphones has proven to be the most
significant bottleneck. Power banks are a vital tool because they can be life-saving,
especially in crucial matters and emergencies, and need smartphones to work.
Power banks are handy for those who constantly work on their smartphones in
daily life. Yet, the idea of bringing and using a power bank in a public space is too
much of a hassle for some people. Most power banks are ponderous with some
people do not bring along any bag themselves while in public space. Although
several brands sell thin and light power banks, the idea of bringing one along every
time is already troublesome.

Thus, in New Product Development (NPD) report, we came out with a solution to
this problem which is by developing a service of a smart charging station. The
service is new to the firm - a new product line for this organization. The smart
charging station will be used every day as a power supply in a public space. This
service is uncomplicated to get to public spaces such as a shopping mall, airport,
and bus station. It will drive easier and effective ways of supplying the power for a
smartphone. So, our focus is to ease the burden of this group of people and make
daily life easier for them.

The overall marketing strategy covers the marketing philosophy and strategy of the
company, the value chain, and the channel of distribution in the target market. Our
target market will be public places throughout Malaysia, particularly significant
public spaces in densely populated metropolitan areas. The first step in our
Marketing strategy is determining the target group. We assume public people
would be the perfect target customers, as this service can make their lives easier.
Besides that, this product is effortless to use and access. The price offered is also
very affordable and reasonable for people from all backgrounds. By proposing and
developing the product, we hope we can easier the public people with their daily
life.

1
1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Problem Statement

There are several factors as to why we decided to propose the idea of making smart charging
stations in public spaces. The smart charging station gives benefits to the problems that some
people faced. The first problem is the idea of bringing and using a power bank in a public
space is too much of a hassle. Usually, most power banks are very heavy and some people
do not bring along any bag with them while they are in public spaces. Although several brands
sell thin and light power banks, the idea of bringing one along every time is already
troublesome.

The second one is people want to use their phone in case of emergency and they are not
bringing along their charger or power bank with them. If something urgent needs to be done,
the charging station is the solution to their problem. For example, after using public transport
such as train, people want to call e-hailing, but their smartphone is out of battery. The only
solution is they can charge their smartphone at the smart charging station then proceed to call
the e-hailing after their smartphone battery is full or half full. The idea of making smart charging
stations will make their life easier.

The last problem is if they want to avoid using smartphones in public spaces, the smart
charging station is the suitable solution for their problem. People nowadays spend too much
time on smartphones even when they are in public spaces. For them to avoid that, they can
leave their phone at the smart charging station because the locker is secure, and they do not
need to worry about the safety of their smartphone. Furthermore, their smartphone is being
charged while they can avoid using smartphones in public spaces. It is like killing two birds
with one stone.

1.2 Methodology: Data Collection

The group devised a variety of methods to analyze the issues and develop a business solution.
All information was gathered using the following methods:

1. Observation

The observation was carried out through the problems encountered by members of
the public who were unable to charge low-battery phones because they had neglected
to bring a portable charging phone with them while shopping. The group members
highlighted certain challenges that the general public is facing using the observation
approach.

2. Surveyor questionnaire

To analyze and validate the preceding data gathering approach, observation, several
online surveys, or questionnaires were undertaken. The 47 people who responded to
the survey were given questionnaires. The questionnaires had to be completed by the
respondents. On the 7th of December 2021, these questionnaires were circulated and
collected, and on the 8th of December 2021, they were returned. The information was

2
then gathered and analyzed using Microsoft Excel software's basic frequency analysis.
Google Forms was used to create these survey questionnaires (refer to Appendix A).

3. Research

Existing phone charging stations in public places have been researched and studied.
Improvements and upgrades have been made to existing products to produce
additional convenience and high-tech items. The smart charging station has been
recognized as a possible solution based on the problem statement.

1.3 Limitations

This study is focusing on how often people use their phones and when they need to charge
their phones when they at the public space. This is to help us to know how important they
need the charger when at public space. The scope and targeted group of the study is the
people who have a smartphone and have been to a public space. The questionnaire will be
carried out to all smartphone users. The questionnaire will be carried out because this
research needs the respondent them on how frequently they use chargers for their phone and
how important the charger is for them when in public space.

The limitation of the study is we face which some of our respondent which is the owner or user
of the smartphone does not know how frequently they use the charger and some of them are
introvert which means they use to stay at home rather hang out outside. As the result, the data
collection process cannot be precise and have a challenge.

The second limitation is financial issues. Because this study or product needs high spending
to do this product. As a student, this is a huge limitation for us because as a student, we have
a financial issue and does not have a lot of money to be spending to create this product.

Lastly is safety. This is one of the limitations because to leave the smartphone that needs to
be charged in the public space even though have a secure box and security system there are
still have a high risk for this product and customer property.

3
2.0 NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (NPD)

2.1 Definition

Living in an era of technology, people are expecting an easier and hassle-free lifestyle with
technological devices that are smart, multi-purpose, and automatically operated. Their daily
activities heavily affected the situation because of the current modern era that they were living
in now. Life gets busier and hectic due to work and other activities, and people are living
independently on their smartphones. People could gain most of the latest news, information,
and knowledge from the internet in just a short period. Conventional ways of doing things can
be time-consuming, difficult to perform, and expensive. To produce new product innovations
to meet the needs of consumers, they have introduced NPD, new products, and improvements
to the existing product.

With these in mind, new products that satisfy these criteria will have a huge potential to stay
on top of the market. NDP is a complete process of bringing new products from business and
engineering perspectives. It is a process by which an entrepreneur designs and creates a new
product or service that will be very useful to customers. People would always try to seek new
things and better products because of their uniqueness. The process involves many aspects,
such as observing current customer need and wants, learning the market, and valuing
competitive environments.

2.2 Classification of NPD

New product development can be classified into two main categories which are a completely
new product and improvements on the existing product.

1. Completely new product

Completely new product consists of new-to-the-world products. These are ground-

breaking products that open up entirely new markets. Another type of new product is
new product lines. These items are not technically new to the market, but they are new
to the firm. Companies create these items to break into a previously untapped market.
These items are frequently identical to rivals' products that are currently on the market,
but with minor differences.

2. Improvement to existing product

Improvement to existing products consists of product line extensions, product

improvement, re-positioning, and cost reduction. Product line extensions are generally
new additions to the firm, although they fit within one of the company's current product
lines. Product improvement usually offers a current product with better quality,
features, or performance. They might also be used to replace current items. Re-
positioning means current products aimed towards new markets includes the creation
of a new application for an existing product aimed at a new market segment. Lastly,
cost reduction technically provides comparable advantages at a lesser cost. From the
consumer's perspective, they are not new items for the firm, but they generally
represent a major change in terms of design and manufacturing.

4
2.3 NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

2.3.1 Research & Development

2.3.1.1 R&D

a) Idea Generation

The idea of this service approach was when one of our group members raised the
concern about how he always forgot to charge his phone when he went to the shopping
mall. He also said that he does not like to bring a power bank to public spaces for
several reasons. After listening to his problem, we looked up some solutions and found
that several public areas provided renting services for power banks. Even though it
can solve his problem of not charging his phone when going out, the renting service
still needs you to bring the power bank with you. So, he still needs to escort the power
bank with him when he uses the renting service. For that reason, it still does not solve
his problem of not bringing a power bank anywhere he goes because most power
banks are heavy. There are also charging station services in public spaces, in
particular, that are not secure enough for people to leave their phones at the station.
This has sparked the idea of producing the smart charging station based on the
problems that he faces. Finally, we provided smart charging station services with great
features that solved most of the obstacles faced by people.

b) Screening

Based on Figure 2.1, we have decided to run a smart charging station service that will
be placed at public spaces and shopping malls with the following features:

i. Watch pager system

When using the services, a watch pager will function as a “reminder” to the
consumer to pick up their phone when using the smart charging station service.
The watch pager will produce a sound when the phone is fully charging so that
the consumer is aware of their phone.

5
ii. Locker system
The locker system is installed with the highest security to ensure that the
consumer’s phone is safe and sound. When using the locker, it is provided with
a passcode that only the consumer will know through the watch pager. By doing
that, only the consumer can open their locker lock.
iii. Payment method: Cash/ Online banking/ QR code
By using this payment method, the smart charging station can be used by many
people. Sometimes, some people are not like to bring cash in their wallets. By
doing this method, the service charge can pay by using online banking and QR
codes provided at the locker. For some people that want to pay for the service
in cash, there will be one payment machine that operates the same as the
parking ticket machine that is usually placed at the shopping mall.
iv. Friendly user
This smart charging station can be used by both android and IOS users. The
charging station system is friendly to use because the payment method is the
easiest way the customer can use, which is cash, online banking, and QR code.
Besides that, a watch pager is also being used in this charging system, where
a watch pager will be provided to the consumer as a “reminder” for them to pick
up their phone when using the smart charging station service. Secure and
locker system is in top security, which the device that has left for charging is
very safe.
v. Secure
About the security of the property of the customer, their property is very safe
and secure with the high security that this charging system provides. The
customer that leaves their properties will be highly secure, and the customer
no needs to worry.

c) Market Survey

For the market survey, we provide and do a questionnaire to gain data and information
on this smart charging station system demand and it is potential in the market. The
questionnaire provides the results of responses of 47 respondents that are shown in
the charts below.

that it may be useful in a variety of settings for the public to utilise while in public space.

19
CONCLUSION

Based on the findings and discussion, we can see that majority of the respondent
are concerned about smart charging stations in public spaces. The battery problem
arises among smartphone users in the public area, especially when they are in an
emergency or forget to charge their smartphones. Therefore, a new way with new
services is needed to help people with this problem.

Therefore, to overcome the problem most people face in their daily life, we suggest
introducing a new service that is called Smart Charging Station. As we can notice,
most of the respondent agrees to provide the service as emergency cases arise in
a public area. Besides, the respondent also agrees that using this service is the
best choice to provide people with energy supplies for their smartphones in their
daily life routine. Besides, the respondent also agrees that using this service is the
best choice to provide people with energy supplies for their smartphones in their
daily life routine. This is a splendid opportunity for us to start the smart charging
station services business because there are a lot of potential customers that will
use our services since it is still new in our country.
