Some Wards and Departments

Surgical Ward is ward that takes care of patients with surgical conditions.

Medical Ward is a ward or a healthcare unit which caters to all patients with medical ranging to
conditions affecting the different systems and organs of the body.

Orthopedic Ward is an initial surgical assessment unit where patients may stay for a short period while
it is decided whether or not a patient may require surgery or is triaged to the correct area. This may be
gastrointestinal or orthopaedic surgery.

Gynecological Ward bedded ward that deals with Gynaecological conditions where operations may be
carried out as recommended by the Gynaecologists.

Geriatric Ward is ward of a hospital is specifically designated for elderly patients. You can bet they have
some pretty lively bingo nights there. Geriatric often describes something related to the medical care of
elderly people, like a geriatric hospital.

Paediatric Ward a term for a ward or part thereof in which the beds are used exclusively for the care of
children.

Dermatological Ward

E.N.T Ward is an 18 bedded, mixed Otolaryngology ward that caters for all medical and surgical ENT
(Ear, Nose and Throat) cases. It also accommodates maxillo-facial and dental cases.

Long-stay Ward a ward for patients who will stay in hospital for a long time.

Intensive Care Unit also known as an intensive therapy unit or intensive treatment unit (ITU) or critical
care unit (CCU), is a special department of a hospital or health care facility that provides intensive care
medicine.

X-Ray Department or the radiology department is the facility in the hospital where radiological
examinations of patients are carried out, using the range of equipment listed above.

Operating Theater (also known as an operating room (OR), operating suite, or operation suite) is a
facility within a hospital where surgical operations are carried out in an aseptic environment.

Casualty and Emergency Department An emergency department (ED), also known as an accident and
emergency department (A&E), emergency room (ER), emergency ward (EW) or casualty department, is a
medical treatment facility specializing in emergency medicine, the acute care of patients who present
without prior appointment; either by their own means or by that of an ambulance. The emergency
department is usually found in a hospital or other primary care center.

Central Sterile Supply Department is responsible for preparing medical/ surgical supplies and
equipment so that they are sterile and ready for use in patient care.

Dispensary is a place where medicine or medical or dental treatment is dispensed

Laboratory is a place equipped for experimental study in a science or for testing and analysis
Out Patient Department or outpatient clinic is the part of a hospital designed for the treatment of
outpatients, people with health problems who visit the hospital for diagnosis or treatment, but do not at
this time require a bed or to be admitted for overnight care.

Maternity Unit a room or area in a hospital which provides care for pregnant women, women who have
recently given birth, and newborn infants.

Occupational Theraphy Department is an allied health profession that involves the therapeutic use of
everyday activities, or occupations, to treat the physical, mental, developmental, and emotional
ailments that impact a patient’s ability to perform daily tasks.

Physiotherapy Department Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function when someone is
affected by injury, illness or disability. It can also help to reduce your risk of injury or illness in the future.
It takes a holistic approach that involves the patient directly in their own care. Physiotherapy
Department is a place where Physiotherapist do his job.

Antenatal Clinic a clinic that women attend when they are pregnant so that the medical staff can check
that they and the baby are healthy.

Post Natal Clinic stated that postnatal care is defined as a care given to the mother and her newborn
baby immediately after the birth of the placenta and for the first six weeks of life.

Psychiatric Unit a unit of a general hospital organized for inpatient treatment of individuals with a
psychiatric condition. Such units usually provide emergency coverage and admission; treatment with
psychotropic drugs or electroconvulsive therapy; group therapy; psychological examinations; and
adjunctive modalities, such as social work services, occupational therapy, art therapy, movement
therapy, music therapy, and discussion groups.

Admissions Department responsible for the flow of patients and the processing of admissions,
discharges, transfers, and also most procedures to be carried out in the event of a patient's death.

Infectious Diseases Unit is a 20 bedded mixed ward that deals with community and hospital acquired
infectious diseases. Patients are admitted to this ward from the Accident & Emergency Department and
also as planned admissions.

Anesthetic Room is a room in the hospital where people get medicine called anesthesia before an
operation.

B. What do they do?

Radiologists are medical doctors that specialize in diagnosing and treating injuries and diseases using
medical imaging (radiology) procedures (exams/tests) such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT),
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and
ultrasound.

Psychologist a person who specializes in the study of mind and behavior or in the treatment of mental,
emotional, and behavioral disorders.
Dermatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in conditions that affect the skin, hair, and nails.
Whether it’s rashes, wrinkles, psoriasis, or melanoma, no one understands your skin, hair, and nails
better than a board-certified dermatologist.

Gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in female reproductive health. They diagnose and treat issues
related to the female reproductive tract. This includes the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries and
breasts. Anyone with female organs may see a gynecologist.

Venerologist a person who studies venereology (the study and treatment of diseases that are spread
through sexual activity).

Pathologist a doctor who has special training in identifying diseases by studying cells and tissues under a
microscope.

Histologist is a medical scientist who prepares, examines and tests samples and specimens from
humans, animals and plants.

Cytologist is primarily a Biologist who studies the structure and function of cells.
