I. Introduction

The Mabato River is one of the natural treasures found in the

Municipality of Magpet in Cotabato Province, which is located at Barangay
Bantac. It is a tributary of the Kabacan River in Kabacan that connects with
the Pulangi River in the Municipality of Carmen, which empties into the Rio
Grande de Mindanao---- the largest river in the Mindanao Island.

The Barangay Bantac named after the surname of the ruler of its
barangay, Datu Bantac. And the river is known as the Mabato River since
some tourist were unfamiliar with the river’s name and assumed it to be the
Bnatac River. The name was simply adopted by everyone. The river streams
from the footprint of Mt. Apo that channels to the largest river in Mindanao.
The physical aspect of the river has a clear and crystal water---- cold and icy
water. Moreover, it has an aesthetic rock formation due to rocks coming from
the highland. Its water current is estimates based on the area. Some areas,
the water current is rapidly high, and some has normal flows. It has various
form of small basin pool which local people and tourist may enjoy doing water
activities such as swimming. And also, the bantac river has a very beautiful
and picture perfect dyke.

II. Discussion

How wide and where is the water of Mabato starts?

The findings show that the local said, it was estimated lengthy as it
connects to the largest river in Mindanao Island. By this, the locals cannot
measure the exact size and area of the river. In short, this explains how wide
and long the jurisdiction of the river. The results also show that the water of
Mabato started from the footprint of the mountain. It is the explanation that
local people and tourists described Mabato River has a clear and crystal-like
water. Moreover, it has a scenic view and aesthetic rock formation. Certainly,
Mabato River is one to be preserved and maintain its natural beauty.

Why is it called Bantac River?

During the course of interviews, it was not called the Bantac River but
the Mabato River. However, due to Datu Ramon Bantac, who once ruled the
barangay, he changed the Barangay’s name into his surname, Bantac. It was
year 1961 to 1964. Although there is no information or proof to support this
claim, some people think that the barangay was given the name Bantac
because it enjoyed the most memorable years of the time during his lifetime.

What are your ways of preserving Mabato River?

The findings show that the barangay council implemented a cash for
work program which aims to maintain the cleanliness of the river. Caregiver
picking up trashes in the riverside. It was also found, the community
involvement such as BPAT (Barangay Patrol Action Team) patrolling the area
and telling people no using of electric fishing rod as it kills small species living
in the water. By this, it is a collectively shared responsibility for the
preservation of the local natural heritage.

What are the occupation of the people who live in Bantac?

Majority of the people said, it was farming, because of most locals

possessed their own land, produce the most lucrative crops, ensuring their
daily subsistence. However, some also said, they are fishing oftentimes to
sustain their daily needs. In general, the local didn't tend to harm the river as
farming is their source of living. This shows how they value the alluring beauty
of the river and its different variety of species.

Are there many tourists who come in Bantac?

The findings show that majority of the locals said, there are lots of
tourists who visits Mabato River to enjoy it's scenic and beautiful view. It is
known for its renowned cleanliness and beauty. The river's natural beauty
drew a lot of visitors, but prior to the epidemic, there weren't many tourists
there; just locals frequented it. Thanks to social media, especially Facebook,
where there are numerous pages that promote the natural heritage of the
Municipality of Magpet. Many individuals from various locations were able to
access the pristine and alluring crystal-like water of the river during the
pandemic. To witness and experience swimming in the Mabato River's natural
and clear water, many tourists from various locations were able to travel to
Barangay Bantac. In general, Mabato River attracted thousands of visitor to
witness its natural beauty.

Do the tourists help the development of the barangay?

Due to the large number of tourists, the residents of the barangay set
up a small business beside the river, such as a mini-store, a hut, and a table
and chairs for rent, to make money from the visitors and to meet their daily
expenses because the income from farming is insufficient to support their
daily life consumptions. We all know that we cannot prevent the reality that so
many people adore tossing trash around, so the Barangay Bantac has
decided to charge a fee every Saturday and Sunday from the tourists for the
upkeep of the river. Due to this, the Barangay Bantac decided to imposed a
10 pesos’ fee on everyone who does not reside in the municipality. The
collected will be used to keep the entire area clean, especially to fund the
caretaker wages. The entrance fee revenue is another factor in the
barangay's transformation into a respectable community and promote
sustainable tourism.

IV. Conservation

The residents of Barangay Bantac cooperate to keep the area clean,

and the barangay tanod regularly inspects the river to ensure its cleanliness
and keeps an eye out for anyone who may have disregarded the rules and
regulations that the barangay captain and other officials put in place. Some of
its rules are prevent the public from harming the river's natural form and order
as well as from using an electronic fishing rod. There will be a penalty for
those who break one of its laws or policies. The barangay tanod also collect
diapers, sanitary pads, and other trash from the riverside when they are
patrolling since there are also certain inevitable scenarios when rubbish was
swept away by the flood or the strong water current.

They also have a method for preserving the beauty of the river; it's
called "cash for work," and it involves the barangay paying people to help
them clean the community, especially the river. There is no denying that most
visitors will ignore the reminders and posters put throughout the barangay, not
only in the river, thus it is more probable that a local will gather the trash and
someone or a garbage truck from the municipality will pick it up.
