MNHS virtual presser boosts stakeholders’ morale amidst pandemic

Kirstaen Dhaeil Gabrielle Mejia

With the aim of making stakeholders aware of the preparations Muzon National High School is
undergoing for the learners of the school year 2020-2021, a virtual presser was presented, Monday, September 7,
via Facebook live. The event was spearheaded by Dr. Rolando Sotelo and Ms. Belen Avaceña, School Officer in
Charge, along with the department heads, coordinators and team leaders of the different task force involved in the
school administration.

despite the pandemic, a well planned delivery of learning will be experienced by the students of MNHS”, Ms.
Arianz Lindsey Maglonzo, the talent behind the presentation and Ms. Lea P. Abulencia, Filipino Department Head
who collated all the accomplishment reports, both expressed optimism over their efforts.

Positive feedbacks from parents were also cited. “Mahalaga sa akin ang edukasyon ng aking mga apo.
Nakakahinga ako ng maluwag ngayong alam ko na, na handa ang paaralan kung saan sila nagaaral.” Mrs. Minda, a
grandmother of a grade 10 student, who happened to have watched the virtual presser on Facebook, said in an

What Is It

In the previous part of the module, you have seen and read
illustrations and examples of news reports, speeches/informative talk, and a
panel discussion. Do you think it is helpful and important to know how to
extract bits of information from the said media platforms and use them in
our daily life?
This time, you will further get ideas and knowledge about these
platforms. These include the parts and the process of how each should be
done. Specifically, it is a must that you learn how to get significant pieces of
information from different mediums and be able to share these with others.
This is applying what you have learned.

3. The PLACELINE is where the report was written (The place of the report
was written depends on where the incident took place)
4. The LEAD informs the reader of the most important aspects of the story
as soon as possible. It is part of the news that most people read.
Use the 5Ws and H rule:

the newspaper editor if there is not enough space left in the newspaper.

Inverted Pyramid Structure of a News Report

PARTS OF NEWS STORY

TASK 4: FIX ME, I’M CONFUSED.The following paragraphs can be
combined together to complete one news story. Analyze and determine the
correct sequence, then write the news story in your activity notebook.

Apart from the washable masks, the DOH also donated test kits, hygiene
kits, and BIDA solution campaign materials which remind the public to
wear face masks, wash hands, observe physical distancing and know
Covid-19 facts.

Duque, together with the Covid-19 Coordinated Operations to Defeat

Epidemic or CODE team, also encouraged the local government units to
produce reusable masks which can provide a livelihood to cooperatives
and small businesses in communities.

disease (Covid-19) in the absence of a vaccine to fight it.

"Proper wearing of (face) mask reduces the spread of the virus by 85

percent. So, the DOH is here to help, to provide washable masks
especially to the poor," he said in a mix of Filipino and English.

The CODE team includes Duque, Department of Social Welfare and

Development Secretary Rolando Bautista, Department of Trade and
Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez, and Covid testing Czar Vince Dizon,
among others. (PNA)

In his speech at the ceremonial distribution of face masks to Antipolo

City residents, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said wearing face

Panel Discussion

Chairman: Good day everyone! I am Irene J. Baez, the chairman of this

panel. Our topic is: Overcoming Individual Challenges. At this moment, let
us all welcome our discussants.
Let me introduce our first discussant, Father Arvin C. Jimenez, a
great priest of St. Joseph the Worker Parish. Let us respectfully welcome
him. Our second discussant is Miss Wendy S. Santos, a teacher from Muzon
National High School. Let us give her a round of applause. Thank you,
Ma’am. Our third discussant is Miss Joy S. Parka, Miss Muzon 2018. Let’s
give her a round of applause. Thank you!
Let us proceed to another member of the panel, Marco B. Gomez, a
student from Muzon National High School. We also have Ms. Sophie S.
Kang, a psychologist who came from the Harvard Institute of Psychology.
Let’s give them a round of applause.
Our next discussant is Kim Y. Rimayong, a trainee from SM
Entertainment who came along the way here from Seoul, South Korea. Let’s
give her a round of applause. Thank you. Lastly, let us also acknowledge Mr.
Jay S. Yukon, a lawyer. Let’s give him a round of applause. Thank you.
All of us encounter different challenges in life and these challenges
can make or break us. Now, let us start the discussion with this question:
What are the challenges in life that you have encountered while reaching for
your goals?
Ms. Rimayong: Hello everyone! Shall I also greet you in Korean?
Annyeonghaseyo! Well, my experience as a trainee in South Korea was a
very difficult yet exciting one. It’s all thanks to the Above that I adapted the
culture of the country and learned their language. Fortunately, I know how
to speak English, so I can communicate with the other trainees and the
trainers, but the most difficult part of my training experience was the
training method of South Korea which is different in the training method of
the Philippines. We needed to wake up early in the morning to train and also
to go to school to study. After school, we will go back to the training center
and train until late at night. The agency also has strict rules to the point
that we, trainees have no freedom. Some trainees also gave up and left the
company and changed their career paths. I also asked myself, “Can I still do
it?” but with the help of my parents, my friends, and the trainers that
advised me not to give up and to believe in myself, I become ready to be in a
group in South Korea.
Chairman: Thank you for inspiring us, Ms. Kim. Let’s now hear what Father
Arvin has to say.
Father Jimenez: A blessed day to us! As a priest, I have encountered a lot
of challenges in life, most especially when I was in my last year in the
seminary that I wanted to stop my studies and told myself that I didn’t want
to become a priest, instead I wanted to work in an office and to build a
family of my own. But, when I was packing my things inside the convent,
there was a voice that whispered in my ears saying, “You are born in this
world to serve the Lord”. I regretted it a lot. I heard the calling of God. The
calling which meant God wanted me to become His servant and because of
that calling, here I am now in front of many people serving the Lord up to
the last seconds of my life.
Chairman: Thank you, Father. Our different challenges in life indeed put us
in hard situations, so we also invited here a psychologist, Ms. Sophie S.
Kang. Can you please share some things that will help us understand people
who are suffering or facing challenges?
Ms. Kang: Hello everyone! In my years of being a psychologist, I have met
many people who suffered from challenges. Most of them suffered from
depression and they have told me that they tried to do suicidal acts. For
some, taking their lives is the only way to escape problems.
Being considerate can be a great help not only to those who are
struggling psychologically but also to everyone who are fighting their own
battles in life.
Mr. Yukon: Thank you for inviting me today. As a lawyer, I can assure you
that the law can protect everyone against physical, verbal, or psychological
abuse. Let’s not be afraid and stand for our rights. Remember that there are
reliable people, including myself, who can help you out in your challenges in
life.
Chairman: Now, let’s give the floor to Ms. Wendy S. Santos. As a teacher,
I’m sure you have encountered students that have challenges in life. How
are they in class?
Ms. Santos: I’m honored to be here with you today. It’s no secret that being
a teacher is not easy; you’ll be a person of influence and a conveyer of
wisdom. Teaching in class is the best part of this profession. I was able to
meet different people with different stories of their own. Well, I am deeply
touched by those students who behaved in class seriously and attentively. It
seemed like they wanted to prove something. Well, others who seemed to be
absent-minded will just sit and wait for hours to pass. Some were noisy
because they wanted attention. Well, I just do my best to make my class
somewhat meaningful and remarkable. I also gave my students pieces of
advice for them to be motivated, to grab every opportunity, to dream big,
and to reach their success and their dreams in life.
Chairman: All of us react differently when we face challenges. Can you give
us some ways to overcome our individual challenges?
Mr. Gomez: It’s nice to be with all of you today. As a student, starting from
my elementary years up to now, I faced different challenges and I’ll be
honest that I needed help coming from my family because they are the ones
that can give me helpful advice. Some of the challenges that burdened me
are financial problems and doing household chores. There are people that I
can rely on and they are my friends, my family, and also my other relatives.
In conclusion, being a student is very hard especially when we can’t manage
our time responsibly.
Ms. Parka: A beautiful day everyone! Performing my role as Miss Muzon
2018 is not that easy. I have to observe a strict diet, to focus on training,
and to learn proper postures and gestures. I have learned that even our
future has no guarantee so we must work diligently and cherish our
present. Obstacles are always there to test us so it’s up to us to always try
our best and pass our tests in life. It’s also fine for us to fail at times for it
makes us learn our lessons and be prepared and be wiser next time.
Father Jimenez: For me, the best way to overcome individual challenges is
to have a strong connection to God. If you are reading the bible, you can see
there that in the book of Isaiah 41:13 it says, “For I am the L ORD, your God
who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will
help you.” This means, that God does not want us to suffer. It means that
He in heaven wants us to become happy and free. Free from problems and
difficulties in our lives. Therefore, for us to win over our challenges in life,
we need to have a strong faith and trust in God because He is always willing
to help us at all times.
Chairman: Thank you, everyone. Dealing and winning over personal
challenges matter. Your attention should be focused on achieving your
goals in positive ways. Sometimes, we feel that the stakes we need to pay are
too high but what matters most is we’ve got to face these challenges head-
on. We must be brave, we must have determination and perseverance and
most importantly we must have faith in God. Surely, we can overcome
whatever challenges that may come along the way. That’s all. Thank you for
listening.

reinforce with a strong argument.
TASK 6: THE VOICE. Read and analyze the Moving Up speech of Eliseo
Ruel V. Rioja, Rank 1, Junior High Completer of Muzon National High
School. Then, answer the following questions in your activity notebook.

Moving Up Speech by Eliseo Ruel V. Rioja, Junior High Completer of

Muzon National High School, Rank 1
S.Y. 2017-2018
A successful day to all of us!
Finally, the day we have always been waiting for has arrived— the day
that officially ends the influx of tasks, assignments and projects; hence, as
for the problems and stress, "set them aside, go have fun, do not be silly,
and just laugh it out." (song reference from “HayaanmoSila” by Ex Battalion)
This is the moment to savor the fruit of our perseverance and struggle
after approximately ten long months. This day is remarkably special as it
testifies that we had overcome and won all the challenges of junior high
school, and now ready for the new chapters of senior high school.
However, we should not forget the persons behind all the medals and
certificates we received. This is a momentous day marking the end of our
junior high years, but this is also a day that we must be thankful to all the
people who guided us for they are the reasons for everything we achieved
right now.
Let us start thanking our ‘petmalu’ (great) and powerful God who
created everything and made all the things we have right now— this
program, these medals and certificates, as well as our safety so we can
convene and gather to this moment without any harm. If He is not here, we
will not have all of these and we will not be successful over the problems
and challenges we encountered during our journey as junior high students.
I also want to shout out to our parents who guided and supported us
in all major aspects— emotionally, financially, morally. Thank you for a very
hyped and unrelenting expression of burning, unmatchable love, and
inspiration which gave us the strength to do all things, though sometimes,
meant or unmeant, we impudently answer them back and hurt them
without knowing that we are already doing it.
Thank you to our ‘lodi’ (idol), our teachers who gave us eight keys to
completely unlock the eight doors of different subjects and knowledge of life.
They are the ones who gave us light and served as our second parents who
further opened our eyes to safely continue our journey to the complex path
of life.
Also, thank you to our principal with overflowing ‘werpa’ (power) who
tirelessly leads and oversees all the activities and celebrations being held
within the school premises to bring fun and ease the student's learning.
Likewise, to the institution Muzon National High School, an instrument for
keeping us on track and in line with the path where we fit while we are in
the refuge of this little school.
And of course, I, and we, will not succeed without our BI (bad
influence) classmates and friends. Thank you bes, bessy, beshywap, boi,
pre, bespren, boy best friend or girl best friend. Whatever we call them, they
are our everyday sources of a smile, but will never give us peace even just
for a second.
Without them, for sure we had turned insane since the beginning;
thus, this is the moment to thank those who incessantly annoyed us and
overturned ours before the wholesome world.
Thank you for being there when you have no money when you have
nothing to answer during exams, and also when you just found out that
your lover replaced you with someone else. Thank you for whispering during
recitations, for saying the exact answer even though only asked for how, for
going with me to the school canteen only if promised to be treated, and
riding along with all the corny jokes and antics that occur inside my head.
Thank you for all the insults to the point that because of them, no
matter how others deride me, I am already numb. So to my future senior
high bullies, sorry but they already prepared my face for that.
Thank you for one, two, three, or four years of friendship. Thank you
for the cheesy sweetness you gave, to those love teams that became real
relationships, and to those love teams that became group activity. Thank
you for the never-ending laugh.
This is just a moving up, not moving on to the memories we shared.
We will just move up, but we will never drift apart. We will separate ways,
but there is nothing to forget.
We will keep our pictures and selfies together alive. We will continue
to chat and laugh out loud. Thank you to all of you, although you never let a
single status or display photo I post pass without reacting angry or
commenting nonsense remarks.
Now that we are ready to level up to senior high school, let us first
thank junior high school that taught us and supplied us with sufficient
knowledge so we would not be "TH rushed" and continue the stream of our
journey as to how it supposed to be.
I hope we are indeed ready— ready for senior high, college life, and the
next chapter of our continuous development; for departing, for exiting the
school grounds, for leaving memories, for bidding goodbye to the chair,
blackboard, electric fan, and even to the walls we reliably lean on; and,
lastly, to be ready for the sad divergence of our paths.
I hope it is not just Facebook who can remember our memories. I hope
we can still like the marks we left together and comment on the playful
exploits we once shared. Together, let us wave to the past and share to the
world that there once was a squad, brotherhood, friendship, group, and
section like us that can never be replaced and matched.
Again, congratulations to all of us. That is all and thank you.

Coronavirus Outbreak: WHO declares COVID-19 a global pandemic

What’s More

What’s More

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the

outbreak of novel Coronavirus disease, COVID-19, a pandemic. WHO director-
general Dr.Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced at a press
conference Wednesday. “Over the past two weeks, the number of cases of
COVID-19 outside China has increased thirteen-fold and the number of
affected countries has tripled,” he said. “In the days and weeks ahead, we
expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths and the number of
affected countries climb even higher,” he said. “In the days and weeks
ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths and the
number of affected countries climb even higher,” Tedros said. “We’re deeply
concerned both by the alarming spread and severity, and the alarming levels
of inaction.” For these reasons, he said, the WHO determined that the
disease outbreak should be called a pandemic.
There are now more than 121,000 cases in 118 countries,
according to statistics from researchers at Johns Hopkins University.
“In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of
cases, the number of deaths and the number of affected countries climb
even higher,” Tedros said. “We’re deeply concerned both by the alarming
spread and severity, and the alarming levels of inaction.”
For these reasons, he said, the WHO determined that the disease
outbreak should be called a pandemic.
The organization did not take this decision lightly, he said, adding
that countries can still change the course of the pandemic.
“We have never before seen a pandemic sparked by a coronavirus,” he
said. “And we have never before seen a pandemic that can be controlled.”
“If countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace and mobilize their people in
their response, then those with a handful of cases can prevent those
cases becoming clusters, and those clusters becoming community
transmission.”
More than 90 percent of cases of COVID-19 are in just four
countries, he noted, and both China and South Korea have recently seen
declines in new cases.
“We have rung the alarm bell loud and clear,” said WHO director
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who added there are now more than
118,000 cases in 114 countries, and 4,291 people have lost their lives to
the disease. But as countries all over the world shift into a pandemic
response plan, one question remains: now what?
A pandemic is declared when an infectious or prevalent disease
spreads globally. This differs from an epidemic, in which the widespread
outbreak is unique to a single country or community at a particular time.
According to the organization’s pandemic preparedness plan,
stopping COVID-19 requires a national government approach that
involves “full mobilization of health systems, facilities, and workers at
national and sub-national levels” to distribute personal protective
equipment, as well as antivirals and other medical supplies.
“If countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace, and mobilize their
people in the response, those with a handful of cases can prevent those
cases becoming clusters, and those clusters becoming community
transmission,” Tedros said.
“We cannot say this loudly enough, or enough, or often enough: all
countries can still change the course of this pandemic.”

1. Prior the pandemic CoViD-19 which caused the government to

enforce community quarantine, what were your plans for the summer
vacation?

2. How does the New Normal environment change your views about family
and education?

3. What do you know about CoVID-19 and why do we need to stay at home
and observe social distancing?

4. As a student, how can you contribute to the community to lessen the

spread of Covid-19?
5. How is your family coping with the pandemic?

Aklan under GCQ: Malls reopen, public transport restart but curfew,
liquor ban still in place- ANC

Four days into a general community quarantine, Aklan Governor

Florencio Milaflores says their malls have reopened while public transport
has restarted but on a limited capacity. Curfew and liquor ban however is
still being implemented.
To date, the province has the lowest number of COVID-19 cases in
Western Visayas with 26, while 13 have already recovered. Aklan's lone
recorded fatality was from Numancia, Aklan.
Boracay Island reopened for tourists of Western Visayas on June 16 to
jump-start the local economy. Despite the island's allowing visitors, only
1,244 travelers in the region entered the prime tourist site from June 16 to
August 9.

Task 11: My Dream, My Speech
Stage fright is not an easy opponent for many people. It takes courage
and a lot of practice to be able to stand and to speak in front of a crowd or
an audience. A challenge is made for you to conquer. You are tasked to write
an effective speech.

Here are some tips to help you plan and write a great speech:

 Organize Your Speech

Good speech organization is essential if your audience is to
understand your presentation. You must take the time to put your
ideas together in an orderly manner. You can organize your speech in
several different ways; choose the outline that best suits your topic.
The opening should catch the audience’s attention, the body must
support the idea you want to convey, and the conclusion should
reinforce your ideas and be memorable. Transitions between thoughts
should be smooth.

 Get to the Point

Every speech must have a general and a specific purpose. A general
purpose is to inform, to persuade, to entertain, or to inspire. A specific
purpose is what that audience should do after listening to your
speech. Once you have established your general and specific
purposes, you’ll find it easy to organize your speech. You’ll also have
more confidence, which makes you more convincing, enthusiastic,
and sincere. Of course, the better organized the speech is, the more
likely it is to achieve your purpose.

 Persuade with Power

The ability to persuade – to get other people to understand, accept,
and act upon your ideas – is a valuable skill. Your listeners will be
more likely to be persuaded if they perceive you as credible, if you use
logic and emotion in your appeal, if you carefully structure your
speech, and if you appeal to their interests. Avoid using notes
because they may cause listeners to doubt your sincerity, knowledge,
and conviction.

Let’s Write!
 Use the given tips as your guide.
 In a short bond paper, write a short speech using the concept “I Have
a Dream”. You can discuss your dream for yourself, your family, your
friends, and your country, and the world. Your dream can range from
simple to grand. The speech should include the importance of your
dream and the things that you are willing to do to make your dream a
reality.

In accomplishing your task, the following rubric will guide you:
