MUSIC
Philippine Contemporary Music refers to the works created from the period of the twentieth century up
to today that embraces the musical characteristics and styles of Philippine art music.
Many significant and influential styles contributed to the development of music of this era.
This unit will tackle the contemporary composers of the Philippines and will be categorized based on
their musical styles in compositions.
Composers will be introduced with brief biography, their works, achievements and contributions to the
music industry.
The musicality and nationalism in you will be developed through this unit as you study composers' great
contributions to society and perform their famous works. You will also understand the musical
characteristics and styles of one's composition and its impact and function to media.
TRADITIONAL COMPOSERS
When we are talking about traditional music, it is the music of the Philippines from the twentieth
century specifically up to the present music, in particular in which composers have their own style in
composing music, not influenced by other styles or techniques, and one of the examples in traditional
music is the creation of kundiman.
NICANOR ABELARDO
A 20th century modern composer and was credited for bringing the Kundiman to the level of the art that
bloomed during the 20th century.

● Known as a nationalist, he sought to express the Philippines’ cultural identity through his
compositions.
● Wrote piano compositions, hymns, marches, chamber music, symphonic poems, overtures,
band music, school songs, operas, sarswelas and kundiman.

● Was a teacher, composer, arranger, pianist, singer,, producer, conductor and a musical
director.
● As a traditional composer, his expertise was seen through his varied compositions of
different genres like folk song, kundiman, religious, jazz, musical play and Original Pilipino
