ENG 102 (INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION) REVIEW SHEET FINAL EXAM Fall 2019

Section I: Reading

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: (Total: 20 points)

William Kamkwamba
[1] In 2002, William Kamkwamba had to drop out of school, as his father, a maize and tobacco farmer, could no
longer afford his school fees. But despite this setback, William was determined to get his education. He began visiting a
local library that had just opened in his old primary school, where he discovered a tattered science book. With only a
rudimentary grasp of English, he taught himself basic physics - mainly by studying photos and diagrams. In another book,
he found their featured windmills on the cover of the book which inspired him to try and build his own windmill.
[2] William started by constructing a small model of the windmill. Then, with the help of a cousin and friend, he
spent many weeks searching scrap yards and found old tractor fans, shock absorbers, plastic pipe and bicycle parts, which
he used to build the real thing. For windmill blades, he cut some bath pipe in two lengthwise, then he heated the pieces
over hot coals to press the curled edges flat. To bore holes into the blades, he stuck a nail through half a corncob, heated
the metal red and twisted it through the blades. It took three hours to repeatedly heat the nail and bore the holes. He
attached the blades to a tractor fan using proper nuts and bolts and then to the back axle of a bicycle. Electricity was
generated through the bicycle dynamo. When the wind blew the blades, the bike chain spun the bike wheel, which
charged the dynamo and sent a current through wire to his house.
[3] What he had built was a crude machine that produced 12 volts of electricity and powered four lights. When it
was all done, the windmill's wingspan measured more than eight feet and sat on top of a 15 feet tall rickety tower that
swayed violently in strong gales. He eventually replaced the tower with a sturdier one that stands 39 feet, and built a
second machine that watered a family garden.
[4] The windmill brought William Kamkwamba instant local fame, but despite his accomplishment, he was
unable to return to school. However, news of his magetsi a mphepo, i.e. “electric wind”, spread beyond Malawi, and
eventually things began to change. An education official, who had heard news of the windmill, came to visit his village
and was amazed to learn that William had been out of school for five years. He arranged for him to attend secondary
school at the government's expense and brought journalists to the farm to see the windmill. Then a story published in the
Malawi Daily Mail which caught the attention of bloggers, which in turn caught the attention of the organizers for the
Technology Entertainment and Design (TED) conference.
[5] In 2007, William spoke at the TED Global conference in Tanzania and got a standing ovation. Businessmen
stepped forward with offers to fund his education and projects, and with money donated by them, he was able to put his
cousin and several friends back into school and pay for some medical needs of his family. With the donation, he also
drilled a borehole for a well and water pump in his village and installed drip irrigation in his father's fields.
[6] The water pump has allowed his family to expand its crops. They have abandoned cultivating tobacco and
now grow maize, beans, soybeans, potatoes and peanuts. The windmills have also brought big lifestyle and health changes
to the other villagers. 'The village has changed a lot,' William says. 'Now, the time that they would have spent going to
fetch water, they are using for doing other things. And also, the water they are drinking is clean water, so there is less
disease.' The villagers have also stopped using kerosene, and can use the money previously spent on fuel to buy other
things. William Kamkwamba's example has inspired other children in the village to pursue science. William says they
now see that if they put their mind to something, they can achieve it. 'It has changed the way people think,' he says.

The Crucial Years of Life

[1] Those were the days when my teenage was about to be over, and in a few years, I would be an adult. The
excitement and the changes in me during those days are not even explainable. I just passed my twelfth standard, and was
applying in different colleges for admission, and finally got admission in one of the most prominent courses in a
renowned university. I still remember how I went to the internet cafe to check my result online, and I started jumping in
excitement as I got my name in my coveted course.
[2] Now came the first day of my college. I was ecstatic to see and meet my new classmates. On the day of
orientation, I saw the students of my class, I knew only one who had been one of my schoolmates, and the rest came from
different states, schools and even different countries wearing different attires; some were in jeans, some wearing brands
and some were just as simple as me.
[3] Coming from a lower middle class family and getting education from a government school, I did not even
know how to dress properly, or how to sit and talk about various places, cuisines, brands etc. in the group. I barely had
money to spend on myself and my classmates or with groups who used to go to party every other day which I could not
even afford to go for. Slowly and slowly, I started losing interest in them and their activities. By now, I was becoming
secluded, and remained alone in the class. I became their topic of gossips, and I used to cry and keep thinking about these
things, and was not even able to concentrate on my studies. Being a small town student, it was very difficult for me to
handle all these alone.
[4] My sister started noticing these changes in me, and she came to me for a serious discussion, and she was
dejected when she got to know about my worst experience. She being my all-time support made me understand by
saying, “These things should not bother you, instead you should concentrate on your studies, and stand out tall”.
[5] I did the same, and started concentrating more on my studies. Side by side, I started giving tuitions, too, to
bear my all day expenses; I did not even take a single penny from home, and started managing my expenses on my own
including the travel costs. The time my friends used to party and chit chat, I used it to earn and study.
[6] Now the result came, and I became the topper of the year. My excitement was beyond my limits. My sister
was on cloud nine, too. Now my classmates started talking to me; most of them tried to be friends with me by asking me
to go out with them for movies, shopping etc., but now, despite having money, I don’t go with them as I am not made for
such a world; that life is not mine, that fake world is not for me. Instead of going out with them, I prefer to be with my
sister and younger brother, have parties with them at home, and enjoy to the fullest.

How to control dengue outbreaks

Because there is currently no effective vaccine against dengue and no specific treatment for the disease, controlling and
preventing dengue fever outbreaks are essential steps for keeping people healthy. There are some simple methods that are
presently used or being developed to control dengue outbreaks in regions where the threat of dengue is high.
The primary preventative measure to reduce dengue infections is the control of mosquito populations. Because the
transmission of dengue requires mosquitoes (1) as vectors. The spread of dengue can be limited by reducing mosquito
populations. One practical and recommended environmental management strategy to reduce the size of mosquito
populations is to eliminate unnecessary container habitats that collect water such as plastic jars, bottles, cans, tires, and
buckets. The female of the Aedes aegypti mosquito responsible for spreading dengue fever, (2) lay their eggs in
containers such as bottles, tires, fountains, barrels, and pots. (3) By removing these habitats. Mosquitoes have fewer
opportunities to lay eggs. This strategy is called source reduction. When container habitats are removed and water storage
containers are covered with a fine mesh to prevent mosquitoes from (4) getting beside them, female mosquitoes have
fewer opportunities to lay eggs, and the eggs cannot develop through their (5) aquatic life stages source reduction can
be effective when performed regularly, especially when members of a community are mobilized and educated about
vector control. A community member can (6) lend his hand in making such efforts successful.
Environmental management initiatives can also include major changes in a community, such as installing water systems
with direct connections to residences and replacing wells and other water-storage (7) containers, which can be mosquito-
breeding habitats. Smaller-scale environmental changes can also be effective, for example, mosquito populations can be
reduced when all members of a community clear blocked gutters and street drains, and keep their yards free of containers
with standing water (8) so that they don’t contain mosquito eggs and larvae. Any open container should be emptied and
cleaned each week. These efforts can reduce the number of mosquitoes living in an area.
What other measures can members of a community take to reduce mosquito populations? Community-based approaches
must go hand in hand with educational initiatives that teach people about mosquito vectors and the risks of having
mosquito-breeding (9) habitats on their homes. Educational initiatives can encourage people to take an active role in
participating in source reduction. Communities that understand the need to make behavioral changes are the most (10)

Dealing with stress before exams

1 The students who are nervous and stressed out tend to forget what they have studied, especially in the exam hall. They fail to
remember what they have studied simply because of the stress. So, the question here is how students can avoid the nervous
breakdowns during exams, when there is a great pressure of studies. So, here is a list of ways to avoid nervous breakdowns during
exams.
2 First, make sure you have all the essays, books and notes handy with you. If you are not aware how the marks are allocated
and what format the exam takes, then enquire with your teachers or else simply visit the exam board's website for better
understanding.
3 Secondly, planning how much time you require for revision and how you can utilize it in the best way possible by making
a timetable can greatly reduce the stress level during exams and help you avoid a nervous breakdown. The best trick suggested by
management experts is taking the overwhelming task as a challenge and simply breaking it down into handy chunks for easy
management. Possibly, you may need to spend more time in certain subjects than others. So, it is suggested to vary your timetable and
routine so that you don't get bored reading a particular subject. You may update the plan regularly or when necessary.
4 Thirdly, take breaks in between your studies. According to psychologists, a person can only concentrate on things properly
for 45 minutes at a stretch. Some of the neuroscientists have revealed that the longer a person tries to focus on things, the less their
brains are able to deal with the things effectively. So, it is important to stay refreshed by taking breaks in between your studies. Rather
than cramming more on revision and taking stress to deal with exams, it is suggested to take breaks and do something different to
avoid nervous breakdown during exams.
5 Next, eating healthy is very crucial and by keeping the blood sugar level stable students can avoid energy dips during
daytime and can enjoy sound sleep during night, which is very crucial to deal with exam stress. If you are still nervous during exams,
then definitely you will avoid having food, but don't forget to drink lots of water. You may refer to internet to find out a proper diet
plan to alleviate the stress level during exams.
6 The next way to avoid a nervous breakdown before exams is if you find difficulty in sleeping at night before your exams due
to stress, then try to do something sporadically.. Sleeping is quite necessary before exams because it helps you to awake with a
refreshed mind next day so that you can prepare yourself for the exam.
7 Another good way to remove stress before exams is discussing your worries with a family member, friend, student counselor
or school tutor who would help you to take the worries out from the system.
8 Finally, it is well said that practice always makes a man perfect! Once you complete your studies, it is the time to revise the
lessons till the time you master them. You may even ask your family members or friends to take a test to check the accuracy level.

ENG 102 (INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION) REVIEW SHEET FINAL EXAM SPRING 2018

Section I: Reading

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: (Total: 15 points)

How to Avoid a Nervous Breakdown During Exams

1 The students who are nervous and stressed out tend to forget what they have studied, especially in the exam hall. They fail to
remember what they have studied simply because of the stress. So, the question here is how students can avoid the nervous breakdowns
during exams, when there is a great pressure of studies. So, here is a list of ways to avoid nervous breakdowns during exams.
2 First, make sure you have all the essays, books and notes handy with you. If you are not aware how the marks are allocated and
what format the exam takes, then inquiry with your teachers or else simply visit the exam board's website for better understanding.
3 Secondly, planning how much time you require for revision and how you can utilize it in the best way possible by making a
timetable can greatly reduce the stress level during exams and help you avoid a nervous breakdown.
According to psychologists, a person can only concentrate on things properly for 45
minutes at a stretch. Some of the neuroscientists have revealed that the longer a person tries to focus on things, the less their brains are
able to deal with the things effectively. So, it is important to stay refreshed by taking breaks in between your studies. Rather than
cramming more on revision and taking stress to deal with exams, it is suggested to take breaks and do something different to avoid
nervous breakdown during exams.
5 Next, eating healthy is very crucial and by keeping the blood sugar level stable students can avoid energy dips during daytime
and can enjoy sound sleep during night, which is very crucial to deal with exam stress. If you are still nervous during exams, then
definitely you will avoid having food, but don't forget to drink lots of water. You may refer to internet to find out a proper diet plan to
alleviate the stress level during exams.
6 The next way to avoid a nervous breakdown before exams is if you find difficulty in sleeping at night before your exams due to
stress, then try to do something repetitively. Sleeping is quite necessary before exams because it helps you to awake with a refreshed mind
next day so that you can prepare yourself for the exam.
7 Another good way to remove stress before exams is discussing your worries with a family member, friend, student counselor or
school tutor who would help you to take the worries out from the system.
8 Finally, it is well said that practice always makes a man perfect! Once you complete your studies, it is the time to revise the
lessons till the time you master them. You may even ask your family members or friends to take a test to check the accuracy level.

ENG 102 (INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION) REVIEW SHEET FINAL EXAM SUMMER 2018

Section I: Reading

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: (Total: 20 points)

Learning to Drive
1 I could not believe it. Driving laws in Dhaka allowed teenagers to get their licenses at the age of sixteen! As my sixteenth birthday
approached, I beamed with excitement and anticipation. What I did not know at the time was this: The driving lessons that I learned in
our old Beatle would stay with me for the rest of my life.
2 My father, who adored driving, was the obvious choice to be my driving instructor. The first lesson took place in the alley in front
of our house. While I sat in the passenger seat, he explained the devices in the car. I was particularly frightened by the gear shift, which
was sticking out of the floorboard. However, my father patiently lectured on the different floor pedals, the turn signals, and, my favorite,
the car horn.
3 For the next lesson, I sat in the driver’s seat. At that time, it felt more like a throne than anything else. My father asked me to turn
on the car, and then he guided me into reverse. As I let up on the clutch and pressed the gas, I felt the car starting to move backward. I was
controlling this vehicle! Slowly and carefully, I backed out of the driveway and into the residential street. After a few moments of
confusion, I had the car sputtering forward in first gear.
4 Two weeks of lessons passed, and I was beginning to get bored with the scenery, which never changed. My father had me drive
around the same block again and again. I was passing the same landmarks—the neighbors’ houses, the dead tree down the street, and the
kids who were playing in the empty field on the corner. When I could stand it no more, I asked to move to a street that had more action.
“Tomorrow. I think you are ready,” my father replied, his eyes twinkling with pride.
5 My emotions were in overdrive the next day. I was finally on a busy street at night. I shifted from first gear to second gear with no
problems. Then came third gear. When I reached the speed that I wanted, I put the car into fourth. I was flying in the old Beatle! My
father’s concerned voice broke my spell. He said calmly, “Honey, there’s a red light ahead.” I was traveling far above the speed limit and
heading toward a red light. All the information that I had learned in the previous weeks leaked out of my brain. I did not know how to
react. I blared the horn and flew through the intersection, which by pure luck was empty.
6 That night my father was somber. I was in tears. How lucky we had been not to have been hit by another car. I waited for him to
reprimand me, but he did not. I was aware of the severity of my moving violation. It is now thirty years later, and I have not forgotten
that day. In fact, if I accidentally drive through a red light now, I remember the emotions of a sixteen-year-old and the wisdom of a loving
father who taught her to drive.

D. 1. William started by constructing a small model of the windmill. Then, with the help of a cousin and friend, he
spent many weeks searching scrap yards and found old tractor fans, shock absorbers, plastic pipe and bicycle parts,
which he used to build the real thing. For windmill blades, he cut some bath pipe in two lengthwise, then he heated
the pieces over hot coals to press the curled edges flat. To bore holes into the blades, he stuck a nail through half a
corncob, heated the metal red and twisted it through the blades. It took three hours to repeatedly heat the nail and
bore the holes. He attached the blades to a tractor fan using proper nuts and bolts and then to the back axle of a
bicycle. Electricity was generated through the bicycle dynamo. When the wind blew the blades, the bike chain spun
the bike wheel, which charged the dynamo and sent a current through wire to his house.

2. The windmill brought William Kamkwamba instant local fame, but despite his accomplishment, he was unable to
return to school. However, news of his magetsi a mphepo, i.e. “electric wind”, spread beyond Malawi, and
eventually things began to change. An education official, who had heard news of the windmill, came to visit his
village and was amazed to learn that William had been out of school for five years. He arranged for him to attend
secondary school at the government's expense and brought journalists to the farm to see the windmill.
