JEWEL THIEVES
Once there was less rain in the state of Vijaynagar. There was very little water
in Tenalirama’s well and he didn’t know what would happen to the fruit
trees in his garden. Just then, he noticed three men paying a lot of attention to
his house.
He was sure that the three were planning to rob his house. He acted quickly.
‘My dear, owing to the less rain the money has become scarce. There are many thieves. Let us
protect our valuables. Put all the jewels in a box and throw them into the well. They will be safe
there.’ Tenali said all this very loudly and thought to himself, ‘Now these thieves will have some
useful work to do.’ He quietly told his wife to put some large stones in a box and throw it into the
well.
The thieves heard the sound of the box falling into the well and were happy.
That night they came to the well. The box was heavy and had landed deep into the well. To get it
they would have to take out some of the water. They started drawing water
from the well and pouring it onto the ground. Tenali had made arrangements
to make sure that the water reached the fruit trees. He had made long narrow
passage in the ground to reach each of the fruit trees.
By the time the thieves found the box, they had drawn enough water to water
the trees. It was almost dawn. Tenali sent for the soldiers, and just as the thieves were trying to
open the box, they were caught red handed.
The King, Raja Krishnadevaraya, was delighted to hear the story and said, ‘Wow! Tenali, you
found a way of getting your trees watered free of cost!’

plant is the best, the one who will have the most beautiful plant will be

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

A water bearer had two large pots. Each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his
neck. One of the pots had a crack in it. The other pot was perfect and always delivered a full
portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master’s house while the
cracked pot arrived only half full.

The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But
the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection.

After two years it spoke to the water bearer, “I am ashamed of myself. I

apologize to you”. The bearer asked, “What are you ashamed of?”The pot
replied, “For these past two years I am able to deliver only half of my load
because this crack in my side causes water to leak on the way back to your
master’s house.”
The water bearer felt sorry for the cracked pot and he said, “As we return
today, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path.” The
cracked pot noticed the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path. This cheered it. At the end
of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load. It apologized to the bearer for its
failure.

The bearer said to the pot, “Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path
and not on the side of the other pot? I have always known about your flaw and took advantage of
it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path. Every day while we walk back from the stream,
you’ve watered them. For two years I have picked these beautiful flowers to decorate my master’s
table. You gave beauty to his house. Each of us has our own unique flaws. We’re all cracked pots.

Two parrots had built their nest on a banyan tree. The female parrot laid two eggs in the nest. Two

Every morning, the parent birds flew out to fetch food for the young birds. Then they returned in
the evening with food for their young children. All this went on for many days. A hunter saw this
behaviour of the birds. He decided to catch the young birds after the old birds would go away in
the morning. As planned he caught the young birds. The young birds
struggled their best to free themselves from the clutches of the hunter.
One of the two young birds escaped from the hunter. The other bird
was taken in a cage by the hunter to his house.
“I caught two birds. But I lost one parrot," said the hunter to his
children. He also told his children, “Keep this parrot safely in the cage
and play with this parrot." Very soon the parrot in the house of the hunter learnt to speak few
words.
The other parrot flew away. It flew for some time. Then it came to a hermitage. Some holy men
lived there. They did not do any harm to the young parrot. The young parrot stayed there.
A traveller was walking near the hunter’s hut. He was tired. He sat near the hut. He heard the

parrot said, “Welcome to this hermitage. We have a lot of good fruits in this forest. Eat whatever
