1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
JEWEL THIEVES
Once there was less rain in the state of Vijaynagar. There was very little water
in Tenalirama’s well and he didn’t know what would happen to the fruit
trees in his garden. Just then, he noticed three men paying a lot of attention to
his house.
He was sure that the three were planning to rob his house. He acted quickly.
‘My dear, owing to the less rain the money has become scarce. There are many thieves. Let us
protect our valuables. Put all the jewels in a box and throw them into the well. They will be safe
there.’ Tenali said all this very loudly and thought to himself, ‘Now these thieves will have some
useful work to do.’ He quietly told his wife to put some large stones in a box and throw it into the
well.
The thieves heard the sound of the box falling into the well and were happy.
That night they came to the well. The box was heavy and had landed deep into the well. To get it
they would have to take out some of the water. They started drawing water
from the well and pouring it onto the ground. Tenali had made arrangements
to make sure that the water reached the fruit trees. He had made long narrow
passage in the ground to reach each of the fruit trees.
By the time the thieves found the box, they had drawn enough water to water
the trees. It was almost dawn. Tenali sent for the soldiers, and just as the thieves were trying to
open the box, they were caught red handed.
The King, Raja Krishnadevaraya, was delighted to hear the story and said, ‘Wow! Tenali, you
found a way of getting your trees watered free of cost!’

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
Once upon a time there lived a King who had grown very old. The King
had three sons, and he was worried that which of his sons should be his
successor. It was very difficult for him to choose the next king among
his three sons because he loved them all. One day a thought came to his
mind, he called his sons and said to them, “I am giving each of you one
seed, that you will plant in a pot, after sometime I will see that whose
plant is the best, the one who will have the most beautiful plant will be
the next King.”He gave each of them a seed. All his sons went back and
planted the seed in the pot.
After few months, two brothers had beautiful plants in their pots with lovely flowers and green
leaves, except the youngest one, as his pot was without plant although he cared
for his seed and pot very well but no plant grew in his pot. When he saw his
brothers' plants he became very sad and worried that what would he show to
his father. After some days, the King called all the three sons to show their
plants to him. "Look father how beautiful our plants are", said the sons who
had plants in their pots.
King asked the youngest son, “Where is your plant? Your pot is empty.” Son replied, “My dear
father, I am really sorry, I tried my best but no plant grew in my pot.” "No! You should not be
sorry" said the King, “because the seeds I gave to you and your brothers were dead and useless,
no plant could be grown with the help of those seeds. Your brothers lied to me. When they saw
that their plants were not growing, they planted other seeds in their pots. The plants they have are
from other seeds. But you were honest and told me the truth, and one of the most important
qualities of a king is that he should be honest. So my dear son, you will be the next King because
of your honesty.”

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
A water bearer had two large pots. Each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his
neck. One of the pots had a crack in it. The other pot was perfect and always delivered a full
portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master’s house while the
cracked pot arrived only half full.
The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But
the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection.
The bearer said to the pot, “Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path
and not on the side of the other pot? I have always known about your flaw and took advantage of
it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path. Every day while we walk back from the stream,
you’ve watered them. For two years I have picked these beautiful flowers to decorate my master’s
table. You gave beauty to his house. Each of us has our own unique flaws. We’re all cracked pots.

Two parrots had built their nest on a banyan tree. The female parrot laid two eggs in the nest. Two
baby parrots came out of them. The parent birds took good care of them. After a few weeks, the
young birds were able to fly for some distance.
Every morning, the parent birds flew out to fetch food for the young birds. Then they returned in
the evening with food for their young children. All this went on for many days. A hunter saw this
behaviour of the birds. He decided to catch the young birds after the old birds would go away in
the morning. As planned he caught the young birds. The young birds
struggled their best to free themselves from the clutches of the hunter.
One of the two young birds escaped from the hunter. The other bird
was taken in a cage by the hunter to his house.
“I caught two birds. But I lost one parrot," said the hunter to his
children. He also told his children, “Keep this parrot safely in the cage
and play with this parrot." Very soon the parrot in the house of the hunter learnt to speak few
words.
The other parrot flew away. It flew for some time. Then it came to a hermitage. Some holy men
lived there. They did not do any harm to the young parrot. The young parrot stayed there.
A traveller was walking near the hunter’s hut. He was tired. He sat near the hut. He heard the
parrot speak. It said, “Fool, why have you come here? I will cut your throat." The traveller was
very sorry to hear such bad words.
Then he walked for some time and reached the hermitage. The parrot was sitting on a tree. The
parrot said, “Welcome to this hermitage. We have a lot of good fruits in this forest. Eat whatever
you like. The holy men will treat you well." The traveller was surprised. He said to the parrot, “I

met a young parrot near a hunter’s hut. It spoke badly. Your words are kind and gentle. Both you
and the other bird are parrots. Then why is this difference in your language?"

parrot said, “The other parrot is my brother. But we have lived in two different places. My brother
has learnt the hunter’s language. But I have learnt the language of holy people. Good company
