Introduction

In ancient times the human kind used the ships to travel across the Continents to
find new countries. Later with the development of the civilization they tried to
capture new countries.

So if he has to win the battle he has to be more efficient in the battle then he has to
find some other way then he tend to use the fossil fuel (diesel, petrol, etc. ) as the
main source of energy.

But it needed much space to carry these liquid fuel which cause the ship to carry an
extra weight. The they came across the nuclear energy which made him with the use
of small amount of fuel he is able to travel a huge distance.
Types of Methods that are use to propel
the ships…

 Wind.

 Fossil fuels (diesel, petrol etc…..).

 Steam engines.

 Nuclear power.
Steam Engines
Stem engines were first used for this purpose. The earliest type of steam
propulsion was of the external combustion reciprocating (single expansion)
type. The deficiencies of this type of steam engine were partially overcome with the
compound steam engine, which was nearly universally accepted for marine
propulsion applications.
Why Nuclear power is needed?
 Needed to reduce the space.

 Wanted to get more power using a small amount of fuel.

 When using fossil fuel (diesel, petrol etc…) these fuels need to use oxygen (O2)
for the combustion of fuel so the submarines are often needed to come to the
water surface to refill the oxygen level.

 Naval ships (submarines, war ships ) wanted to stay at the sea for longer time
without refilling of fuel within a short period of time.

 Wanted to get a solution for the energy crisis.

Nuclear Reactors
producing steam are used to propel warships and icebreakers, and there
have been attempts to utilize them to power commercial vessels.

Nuclear Propulsion
Nuclear-powered ships and submarines use a nuclear reactor to create
steam and either use a steam turbine directly for main propulsion, with
generators providing auxiliary power, or else employ turbo-electric propulsion,
where the steam drives a turbine-generator set with propulsion provided by
electric motors.

Nuclear Propulsion
Working Principle
Why is nuclear marine propulsion is a good idea?
Amongst all the speculations and standing doubts about use of marine
propulsion system based on nuclear energy, there are some key factors that make
this a good idea, whatever way you look at it.
 In the current scenario of extreme fuel shortage, nuclear ships are the
answer that everyone has been looking for. Energy produced from nuclear
reactions is immense which can be used easily.

 Since amount of energy produced in every reaction is quite large, a single

time energy production can be used for a propulsion ship for a long time.
Nuclear ships offer a refilling solution of as less as once a month. This
could make shipping a speedy and hassle free process.

 A nuclear reactor is designed to produce energy under controlled

conditions. It is compact and can be moved around easily. So apprehensions
about practicality of a nuclear reactor on ships, boats and vessels can be
put to a rest.
 Fuel efficiency of nuclear propulsion engines is more than most of the fuels
currently in use. This means that amount of energy derived from nuclear
reactions per unit weight is more than any other fuel.

 The better power to weight ratio means that nuclear ships can have better
weight carrying capacity than other ships, offering quicker traveling over
longer distances with greater load.

 Nuclear ships tackle problem of air pollution too as there is no production of

undesirable smoke or particular pollutants that have become a menace all
over the world.

 Nuclear military ships like submarines can survive for months underwater
without feeling the need to resurface for refueling. This can make combative
forces much more efficient.
Disadvantages of using Nuclear propulsion….

 Large shielding is required to prevent the radiation.

 Because of that (putting large protection shield) the production cost is high.

 Specially trained boat crew is needed.

 With a small failure the affect to the environment is high….

 Any failure in the system can cause a huge explosion.
